  1. whoa
  2. Signing bonuses are prorated over the life of the contract. So, if a guy gets a $10Mil signing bonus over 5 years, it counts 2Mil against the cap every year. Doesn't matter if he gets all $10Mil up front, defers half, some or all of it. Until he's cut Signing bonuses still count against the cap if you're cut though, right? Because that's guaranteed money. The point is it is no longer prorated at $2m every year. If you cut a guy after year 3 then the remaining balance of the prorated bonus is pushed up to the "league year" you are operating in.

  4. I thought I read speculation that it was a mini-competition between Shark and Garza. Not that it really matters, but I'm guessing Garza would be more in-line for second series, or maybe the home opener rather than opening day now.
  5. I would think only a goober would bother following such a thing.
  6. That sort of setback virtually assures he won't be pitching on opening day, no? This early, I wouldn't think so. Especially considering the fact that they started ST a little early this year for the WBC. opening day is less than 6 weeks away. If he's taking a week off now, it's going to be tough to be ready for that first game.
  7. What, all of the wonderful Twitter/Facebook rage is made up? I don't follow random cubs fans on twitter or facebook so I'm not aware of it. I'm sure somebody somewhere is upset, but an actual uproar with a sizable portion of the fanbase?

  9. Is there an actual uproar or a manufactured uproar where the media constantly reminds people that the guy was a fan favorite?
  10. That payroll number was sustainable, the growth rate of the payroll was not sustainable.
  11. He wasn't shot by a legless sprinter was he?
  12. "So-called experts"? Anybody who has said anything about the guy says he's 1b/DH, if not simply just DH. I don't see the point in insinuating he may play some other position other than 1B, and then back off that statement. That video still shows a kid with B-cups and backboobs. He may not be a giant slob, but he's huge for a baseball player and there isn't any reason to pretend otherwise.
  13. So is there one spot or two spots open? 1...... Garza Samardzija Jackson Feldman Wood/Villanueva But why did he say "other than those top three"?
  14. So is there one spot or two spots open?
  15. Meh. It's leaps and bounds better than him refusing to acknowledge that his swing needed fixing. I'll take a young player with potential working hard to fix a problem over the alternative any day of the week. Well no kidding. Nobody is talking alternative. A young player being willing to work on stuff isn't out of the ordinary. What is, or will be actually meaningful is if he can translate the work to the field. Good thing you and Dexter are here to keep the unbridled optimism in check. I was getting a little tired of the last several pages talking about Jackson's HOF speech and all but I was too timid to speak up. What is the point of your asinine statement?

  17. Kind of surprised there wasn't more of an uproar after the Bourn deal. I thought a few weeks ago everyone was hoping to sign him. Considering the money he got, it seems like a pretty big win for the Indians. It's not a bad deal, but this team needs more offense, not more speed and outfield defense. Not sure if Bourn would have helped this team much. Bourn would've helped this team as much as he would've helped any team that he'd play the same amount of time for. It's about how many runs he contributes (both offensively and defensively). Worrying about how is splitting hairs. It's not splitting hairs when you consider the inherent weakness in the stats that claim to quantify how many runs a guy contributes with defense and baserunning.
  18. and inaccurate if you saw the press conference
  19. same here. not sure 2013 matters at all for this subject.
  20. Says who? http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2012/news/121001/kristin-cavallari-240.jpg
  21. not much reason for Samardzija to settle for less. I think he's made more than $15m in his career so far, so he's not desperate for that first big payout the way a lot of guys would be.
  22. Didn't they also have some ambiguous language about the commish also being able to add additional penalties as he sees fit if teams are egregiously manipulating the rules?
  23. He shouldn't.
  24. Every account of the bunt tournament I have ever read says the bunt tournament is about putting the ball in a specific place. No, we cannot infer the purpose of the tourney is equally about defense. Nothing at all suggests it plays any part in the tournament. http://mlblogsvineline.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/photo11.jpg One guy bunting, a couple gloveless guys shagging and everybody else lounging around.
