any replay you are dying to see will not be shown on the jumbotron. Do you people think it's like some giant personalized RedZone channel or something? Have you ever actually seen a jumbotron in use at a stadium?

Well this is [expletive] pathetic. I wouldn't argue that at all. I'm just tired of people putting the blame on Theo, when its extremely likely he's not had a true choice in spending more. To me, the fact I honestly think we've got a realistic shot at contention next year, speaks very highly of our FO, given what I think is a [expletive] payroll cap, that Theo didn't see coming immediately, when he got here. Theo has made it clear the past several months that he does not want to spend money right now.

I was actually thinking that very thing yesterday. They could use it as leverage when negotiating a potential extension, but I doubt they want to give him one at all. So they might as well just make the offer and hold onto him for another year. -
probably a whole hell of a lot of money. Like a lot more than the jumbotron would generate over any prolonged period of time. I wouldn't be shocked if they bought out one or two, to try and break up the alliance. All it takes is one owner to realize the potential of a dying business. If they could get air rights to cross Clark street to the hotel, they could conceivably get air rights to have a crosswalk to one or two of the rooftops, which would really open up the possibilities for new revenue streams. Then you'd be left with a couple independent rooftops on the periphery, but the Cubs would have their location to market to bachelor parties and work groups that don't want to rent a suite or buy scattered seats. I don't see that happening though.

The Cubs are not going to move. They know this. That is why they aren't negotiating from the standpoint of worrying about what would happen if the Cubs left.

Not necessarily. But the clubhouse is a huge project. So is the hotel. Two projects that size taking place simultaneously will take up a lot of their time and space in the area. Lots of workers, lots of fenced off sites. Lots of paperwork and inspectors and deadlines, etc. But also they may want to wait on the jumbotron to delay the legal issues. If the rooftops plan to sue the day they start on the jumbotron, it could put other projects in play at the same time at risk. I just think that a combination of many things will mean the jumbotron won't go up in year 1. Just a complete guess though.

Ha. I wonder if the screen will be in the first phase. They've done larger projects in one offseason, so I could see it being possible, if not likely. Seems like, aside from the clubhouse, they'd want to prioritize any work that could produce more revenue ahead of structural work (I know they'll be replacing sections of concrete every offseason... just think they might be doing less of that now and more of it later). The way those photos showed the new clubhouse layout, I think that's a ginormous project involving the gutting of everything under the main grandstand. I think they could conceivably do that and the board at the same time. However, the hotel project has to be expected to bring in just as much revenue as anything else, so wouldn't that have to start right away? If I had to guess I'd say the board will wait one more year. They are expecting lawsuits and don't want to have to scale back after already starting the project.

My guess is Tunney doesn't want to be seen in agreement with his masters' nemesis. They simply agreed to let it go up to vote but won't go on record to say he supports the sign/expansion/etc.

Agreed. Something is messed up here. How can they say that the deal has been reached but keep referring to it as a proposal. Unless they are referring to the fact that city council needs to approve or something?? The full city council approval thing is an issue, but it sounds pretty clear to me they haven't actually come to an agreement on the details, as he is just sidestepping every single question. He's not good at press conferences. Although I did like the answer to the questions about potential rooftop lawsuits. "This is our proposal. We expect to go through a prolonged community process with lots of hearings and in the end go ahead with this proposal."

so it doesn't sound like they've agreed to anything. Ricketts keeps saying this is our proposal, but it differs from the city's statements in terms of the jumbotron and expansion onto sidewalks on waveland/sheffield.

It's been stated for a while that they don't need much of any approval for improving the grandstands, but they plan on doing that in pieces over the next 5 years.
