    I wouldn't move him for the sake of moving him, my point is they could theoretically get a haul for him. If he's considered the 4th best skater in the NHL and getting better I don't see how his next contract only gives him a 1-2 million raise.

    Kane isn't going anywhere. If the marketing department gets its way, no, he won't be going anywhere. If the Bowman's have as much control as they probably should, there's a fairly decent chance he gets dealt sometime. Hockey players move all the time. I still like to believe Buffalo will do something stupid in a trade with hopes of generating excitement for the hometown kid.

    It will be annoying from a "the internet is making fun of the Bears quarterback situation again" point of view, but there's nothing wrong with giving him a look.

    That's the way I'm leaning, unless they may think he will be allowed to "treat his ailment" as a pro. Still though, if they were drafting 3rd maybe it makes sense to take the guy but when you have the option of one of the other two among the big three, I see no reason to risk it.

    some guy from SI and a professor (from the university of his mom's basement) on CNBC talking about the decline of baseball, citing Miami, Philly, Houston and Cubs among others with declining attendance and the exorbitant prices. its' really mostly about the Marlins and pointless

    I absolutely know that. I don't think Szczur can be a 360/740 guy in the majors. I don't really think Ha can either, but even if he can, I'm not convinced he can play good MLB CF defense. But you said he'd have to "massively improve" on his current numbers to be valuable. His current numbers in AA match up with 360/740, but what is his MLE? Well, sure, no question. I doubt he'd step into Wrigley today and post 360/740. I was specifically responding to what Kyle said. Seems like an odd response then when it was clear he would have to massively improve to have those types of numbers in the majors, and he's already nearly 24.

    At this point? I'd say this series would be a more surprising sweep most because Boston has the next 2 at home. Even prior to this point I would think that LA's home dominance and the fact that their goalie was considered by some to be the best player left in the playoffs would make it the most improbable.

    I think he was just listing the type of hitters he isn't. I still don't like that characterization... but after knocking his power, he basically seems to be saying, "and he's not even a leadoff hitter." Yeah, I don't think he sounds like a guy who is going to help much at the CF position for the longterm. But if the question is can he hold down CF for a year or two while more appropriate solutions are found, the answer is a bit vague. The 7 and 8 holes exist and often get filled by guys with little to no power. But you don't have to be a stereotypical leadoff hitter to bat leadoff either. The Cubs haven't had one of those in decades.

    I don't get why "not really being a leadoff hitter" means he can't start in CF.

    and it's not even that he's getting votes that were lost by Gray's drug test, because Appel destroyed Gray and Bryant in that previous poll.

    I'd say all are fair. Gray and Bryant should start next year in high-A, Appel at either high-A or AA. Well that would change the 2014, or maybe cup of coffee in 2013 ETA.

    That's not how you judge such things. It's definitely part of it. I understand using hindsight to reevaluate your processes... but looking at things objectively, right now you're looking at an absolute best case scenario on Anibal and pretty much absolute worst case on Fuji and Jackson. There's not much to be derived from that. While I agree, you also have to consider that the best player of that group, by far, is performing the best. That's not an accident. The Cubs have been happy taking second tier guys left and right while they attempt to tread water, and that is fine to an extent. But to be a really good baseball team you need really good players, not just guys who can hold their own against the league average. The dive they took last season, and the half hearted attempt to be good this year, probably turned off quite a few potential targets. If the money is similar, guys are going to take the better opportunity to win. That means the Cubs either have to offer more money than others to get their targets, or find another way to get good enough to be a place good players want to come in the first place.

    that is in the middle of a cubs homestand, with an off day the week before and the ASB the week after.

    Same. I have an issue with signing older guys to massive (think Pujols) commitments when you are going to get the majority of the value in the first 2 or 3 years of a deal and then be paying for that production for years thereafter, but otherwise, criticizing getting good value on guys for now is ridiculous. What the hell else were they going to do with the $5M they saved in 2013 by not signing Fujikawa? Or the $12 or w/e on Jackson? Use the money saved on Fujikawa to upgrade Jackson to Sanchez? But that still falls under the why would you sign him when you aren't going to contend theory.

    I don't have a problem putting them in the haven't worked out category, but to criticize them because they weren't going to contend does not make sense to me.

    I can't see putting either pitcher atop this group right now. Soler has done enough to stand out and deserve the top rank, and by year's end I'd hope that one or both of the other bats would have also done enough. By this time next year perhaps that will change.
