Definitely not ideal, but I’d rather baptism by fire this stretch, and potentially final, run of Fields’s career in Chicago than keep putting off the inevitable. He needs to play well and produce in challenging circumstances to justify a 4th season.

Some people who wrote about the team. The broadcasters of the game and that whole crew that praised Bagent after. The problem isn’t so much radio caller types, but there seems to be a growing sense from beat writers that Poles is solidified in his role and he’s happy to keep Eberflus. it’s annoying that the bar has been set so low that an ugly win, without covering the spread, is garnering much positivity about the guys that got us here.

The Lions are off to the start many predicted and many more scoffed at in the preseason. They squeaked by the Chiefs to open the season, blew out 5 bad teams, lost to a decent Seattle team and got their asses handed to them by Baltimore. This is a team that absolutely deserves to be on top of this division, and favored by 8 against the Bears, but is pretty clearly outside the top group of NFL teams. In other words, they are beatable. Detroit goes to LA this Sunday to face the enigmatic Chargers, who come into the game on the heals of two blowout wins, most recently against the boringly decent Jets. If Detroit wins big, the spread will widen. If they horsefeathers the bed, might it go back under a touchdown? If Fields is back the offense could theoretically be explosive. The defense is not the porous blob it had been over Eberflus’s first 20+ games. It is still easily exploitable by quality NFL veteran QBs, and Jared Goff is apparently playing like one of those things. A win here will go on the top of the resume when it comes to Eberflus positioning himself to stay through the rebuild. A hard fought loss won’t damage his reputation in the least. But another blowout loss is what most expect.

I’m happy they won. I’m glad Carolina lost. But part of me is irked that the same group of people feel this game was somehow a vindication for what Poles has done, how Eberflus has coached, and the way Bagent has played. They won this game because the opponent is bad, the QB was a panicky rookie and they had zero weapons. the best player on the offensive line is still the guy that was a holdover from the previous regime. Bagent did nothing in that game, and the offense left a lot of points on the field directly because of all the things Bagent can’t do. they won a game, yay. It’s good to win games, but they might only have 2 more of those left this season. Partially because Eberflus is not a good in game decision maker, and apparently not a post game explanation giver. Eberflus is the reason the Bears lost to the Giants last year and he will directly lose them another game this year too. He’s a clown (go back and watch that halftime interview and his uncomfortable smile) and yet a lot of Bears media thinks Poles wants to keep him here and would be justified in doing so. Ebeflus and Poles have been good at one thing, putting the Bears in position to draft high in the first round (but not the 2nd). Eventually you need to be good at beating good NFL teams, not just the bottom dwellers and teams about to fire their head coach. These two have not shown anything that indicates they are capable of leading the team to multiple wins over good teams.

I didn’t see his last game but he started the year without this group of linemen protecting him.

He’d probably have fumbled the ball that Bagent managed to recover

5-2 going into 3rd. This team is not good but it’s so much closer than the bears to being competitive
