And trying to explain away this season as unlucky is productive? The answer to that question was the part of that sentence you cut out. But that goes back to the simple fact that none of these discussions are productive. What is the point of pointing out how unproductive it is to point out that the pythag is skewed by a couple weird things?

Castillo is a 27-year-old catcher with a 26% K-rate. Setting back and assuming that's filled is a perilous position to take. he was a 3.2 fwar player last year and he's on about a 3 fwar pace this year. the position is filled. Yeah, at the very least he's serviceable. Filling the catcher spot with someone else is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the list of necessities right now. I agree that he's both serviceable and that spot is way down the list of necessities. The problem I see though is that this team is so far away from contending that given his age and position I would bet he will absolutely need to be replaced* before the next playoff game. *Or at least pared with a much more serviceable backup.

Over the course of 6 months it is more predictive. Over the course of 1.5 months with 2 huge outlier games it is meaningless. Incorrect. There have been multiple studies demonstrating that Pythogorean record becomes more predictive than actual record or previous record as quickly as a quarter of a season. Yes, "it starts to become", it is not for all teams every season.

No, I don't care how they've gotten to their stat lines yet. Lake and Olt with .700+ OPS's is fine with me. I see Lake with little shot at starting but I'm not going to give up on Olt. Castillo is fine. Kalish is a backup. They may be individually "fine" but those OBPs (much more important than SLG) they will drag down the offense, and if you just field a team of guys who are "fine" you will suck. This is a team of guys who are "fine" and that is why they are losing so much.

Unfortunately, those are the only 2 hitters in the bright spot category. The next group is just "not disappointing" and then there are the black holes. There may be 10 guys who could individually be fine on a good roster, but you need more good players to slot ahead of those guys to have a major league caliber lineup.

If somebody thinks that pythag more accurately reflects how this team has played than the actual record then I just don't understand the reasoning. They've had a couple big run scoring games. They seemingly come out of nowhere and are surrounded by 0/1 run outputs. This team sucks at hitting. They cannot get on base. They have a handful of marginally powerful hitters, but by and large those players have huge flaws in their individual games that leaves them as all or nothing types or somebody who only occasionally flashes signs of being a dangerous bat. There are backup quality players all over the field. They have 2 legit longterm everyday players and then a collection ranging from garbage to passable. The pitching staff has been pretty good, but they are bottom half of the league in striking people out and giving up walks, which is a weakness that probably leaves them susceptible to giving up more than they "should". Runs scored versus runs allowed may theoretically begin to give you an idea of how well teams have played at this point of the season, but it can still easily be skewed by 2-3 games of unusually high scoring. This is a very bad team. Very bad teams cannot use the excuse of bad luck.

I didn't hear that bit, but the part about quarterbacks was the most interesting to me. I think it was every QB that's arrived in the last 8 years and made 40+ starts in the NFL was drafted in the top 3 rounds. He said something prior to the draft that drafting a quarterback was pointless because late picks don't wind up doing anything in the league. And all the talk about the new guy is that he can be a backup. So, it seems a little weird that they appear to have purposefully spent that draft pick on a guy they believe will always just be a backup.

Yeah, but the big difference there being that Ochocinco was already a veteran rather than some fringey draftee just out of college trying to make it in the league. It also wasn't a show about him trying to make the team, right?

Javy is ahead of him in line, but not far ahead. The dominant college bat types tend to move very quickly, and Javy has some flaws that could delay his promotion for quite a while. -
