It is more that there have been questions about whether all our shortstops would end up at shortstop. I'm talking specifically about the reports on Russell that have nothing to do with the Cubs. They all seemed to have questions on his defense. -

I would bet he doesn't make the cut on most. Here's a 20 that was posted in the minor league forum today: Bryant, Baez, Soler, Tseng, Almora, Vizcaino, Edwards, Rivero, Vogelbach, Bruno, Russell, Alcantara, Schwarber, Torres, McKinney, Johnson, Hendricks, Stinnett, Jimenez, Underwood Who does Black kick out? He's ahead of Bruno and Underwood for me. Bruno is in somebody's top 10?

I knew of Addison Russell prior to the trade and was under the impression he was a top notch defender and hitter. But after reading a lot of these reports on him it seems there were plenty of questions about where he would end up when he was drafted and still questions about his longterm defense at SS. Then, at the same time there seems to be no doubt that the consensus is he's now the team's best answer at the position. Which is it? Are those questions about his glove just nitpicky and/or no longer relevant?

Knowing the plan and actively participating in 90 loss seasons every year are entirely different subjects. Knowing the plan and having a good idea that you are part of that plan does not erase the depressing nature of playing for a team that can't win and isn't even trying to win.

I keep going back to Rizzo as an offensive comp. Rizzo was 22/23 in the 2012 season, and he split the year pretty evenly between Iowa and Chicago. He put up an 1.101 OPS in Iowa and .805 in Chicago, and that's roughly in the neighborhood of the drops we've seen from just about everyone graduating from Iowa to Chicago lately (except Junior Lake, for some reason). Bryant turns 23 next January and has an 1.138 OPS with a higher K-rate and much higher BABIP than Rizzo did. He's also had less time as a pro so I think he has more room to improve quickly than Rizzo did, so I kind of want to just call it all a wash and expect an .800 OPS from him in his first year too. With average-ish 3b defense, that's roughly a 3.5-4 win player. Bryant also had less cancer, I think.

baez and bryant aren't going to be there opening day 2015, much less russell and soler. well, soler maybe if he had more PAs this year, but he hasn't. I understand that Russell had a hamstring issue at the start of the season, but from the sound of what's been posted on Oakland A's boards, it seems that he would've been in AA/AAA for them for most of the 2014 season, if not a mid-season call up if the injury didn't happen. Do we see the Cubs holding him in the minors for another full season? Also, with the way Bryant is hitting at all levels and and Baez starting to put it together on a more consistent basis in Iowa (yes, small sample size over the last 3-4 weeks), do we really think those two won't make it on the opening day roster in 2015? If he's not up now he isn't going to be here opening day.

In his first 300 PA Moss had an OPS around 750-760 and his K rate was half of what Olt's is currently. Moss's 668 is very different from Olt's 600.

I would not be upset if they kept a bench player that could crush lefties and hit for some power with little else. But Olt hasn't even done that this year. He's only a mid-700 OPS against lefties and a negative WAR overall.
