    I'm guessing teams are going to be a little turned off from offering RGIII type hauls after how that's turned out. The Steelers could be an interesting team for him, if he does fall. Big Ben is getting old and his contract is up soon. Technically, Winston is already a stealer.

Hey Chip Kelly never had a winning NFL season before getting the Eagles job. It's not a convenience thing, but you seem hung up on the idea that Shanahan has been passed by the NFL game, with one year off. Pete Carroll wasn't even involved in it for over a decade. College and NFL are quite different. Your obsession with age and how this relates to Cutler has no validity. I can understand the concern with a lack of recent major success, but I hardly think the game has passed him by and think you are unduly influenced by all the obsessive Steelers fans that take pride in only having 3 coaches in 95 years. This hiring isn't about 10 years from now, 8 years from now or even 6. This hiring is about the next 2-4 years. If that person wins, he can and will stay beyond that point, if he loses, he better be gone. Mike Shanahan isn't Dale Sveum. He has the best resume of the current coaches on the market and drawing interest. He may or may not be the best candidate for the job, but your reasoning for claiming he should not be one makes absolutely no sense.

    Pete Carroll was hired at 59, 12 years removed from his last winning season in the NFL. The obsession with age does not make sense.

    The 2-win seasons in 2011? Shanahan won 10 the following season. Caldwell is 2.5 years younger than Shanahan currently. Shanahan is 3 years younger than Coughlin when he last won a Super Bowl.

    There isn't a huge list, but it is hardly unprecedented. And 65 in 2018 isn't the same thing as 65 in 1978.

    If Winston went to the Bears and Cutler stayed here, the "backup QB is the most popular person in town" storyline would be amazing to follow. Probably also depressing as hell.

    McNair sat for a couple years but he also had a 7-year contract. Back in the 90s you could have your first round QB sit and "learn". Nowadays I do not think teams are willing to let early 1st round QBs sit for 2 years, "wasting" 2 of their 4 rookie contract years. Johnny Manziel had no business playing at all this year, yet even as a 22nd pick they were pressured into using him. Winston isn't going to be able to sit for 2 years. Just because teams don't do it, doesn't mean they shouldn't. Last good example was Rodgers and it was actually controversial once they did move forward with him... He also went 24th and had a HOF QB ahead of him. If Winston gets drafted at the end of the first and has a HOF QB ahead of him, they can probably get away with sitting him. Although that probably also means a team will have a cap hit in the mid-to-upper 20s from the QB position. I think raw is talking Winston going top half of the first and probably to a team with no good QB.

    Unless he loses his job soon, Caldwell will also join the 60-plus year old coaches. He is 2.5 years younger than Shanahan and was hired to try and get the most out of a veteran QB with a huge contract, no playoff wins and a sub sub .500 record. I'd like to find the guy who will be here for the next 10 years because that probably means he will be pretty good. But being head coach for 10 years doesn't mean you've achieved greatness (see Smith, Lovie or Lewis, Marvin). Relative youth doesn't mean much either. The history of this league is littered with 49 year old failed head coaches. I want the guy who can do the best job the next few years, and I don't see anybody out there who is a slam dunk great candidate. Kubiak would be my preference. Shanahan would be perfectly acceptable.

    Maybe it isn't "best case", but it's a pretty likely scenario. But 2018 Shanahan will be 66 years old. He'd be 4 years older than every coach in the league now other than Coughlin who is 67. Coaches don't typically coach at that age. Carroll Forgot the word "now". Carroll is the same age as Shanny now (as is Belichick). He's actually a month younger Shanahan is younger than both of them. We keep repeating this fact.

    Hence my opinion. Obviously, everyone doesn't agree with this. But if Shanahan isn't a great coach anymore. Why hire him? Especially when combined with the fact is best case he's gone in 2-3 years? I do not agree that 2-3 years is best case. Why is that best case? Best case is they take a step forward in 2015 and actually contend in 2016. The new GM keeps plugging in young draft picks and the Bears win a lot in 2016/2017. Why is Shanahan then automatically gone in 2018? Cutler still has a longterm contract and it just gets more cap friendly as time goes on. QB can be a stable position and if your QB situation is settled you can win. If Shanahan can get nothing out of Cutler in the next couple years and the team stays under .500, then he's gone in 2-3 years. But that is worst case.
