If he can turn the 1st 4 picks into his starting qb, #2 wr, top DE and another impact receiver/tackle he might be happy with that over the depth picks might provide

Redshirting the top pick in the draft is not an option. Having him compete for the starting job with a guy some people like is perfectly fine. But he’s gonna win the job.

Re: the “do right by Justin” comments. I really don’t think that holding onto him is contrary to that statement. It seems obvious that Poles wanted to trade Fields to a team that valued him as a starter. But what is he supposed to do, force a trade to a team that doesn’t value Fields and has other plans at the position? Is that doing right by fields? he wanted to hand Fields a good situation, but there isn’t a good situation to hand him. His best bet is backing up a shaky veteran or starting for a team breaking in a rookie. Well, the team he’s currently on could offer the latter, and most teams under the former scenario would rather pay some average Joe $7m than give up anything more valuable than cash.

Rypien is a practice squad caliber player. His signing is meaningless.

I’m not particularly enthusiastic about going into a draft with Ryan Poles absolutely needing to nail two top ten picks at positions hes yet to show an ability to draft for things to be going right next season. When Poles NEEDS to address a position, typically he ignores it entirely. I’m not counting my chickens on that #9 pick. Especially not when he’s content giving Waldron guys “familiar with the system” and still seems pleased with his defensive minded head coach.

The problem with that group is that all of it is complementary, and none of them are able to elevate the group on their own. DJ Moore is a fine #1, if you have top end talent elsewhere. Cole Kmet is a fine TE, if you have top end talent elsewhere. Swift is an okay RB, you need to surround with top end talent elsewhere. if every player in the league went into a draft tomorrow, none of the Bears players would be close to selected at the top of their position. It’s all second tier (or lower) guys. That’s fine, if you have an elite QB, but the Bears do not, and probably will not for a couple years. So they have to spread it around to everybody, and to do that you need a hell of a lot more than what they have now.

This is exactly why I am upset with the bears approach to free agency. They’ve had opportunities to improve the team with nothing but money, have plenty of cap space, and have refused to do anything about it for three offseasons in a row. austerity is a plague justified by the ignorant

It makes perfect sense that a new oc would be able to bring in some of his guys, but Waldron has such a mediocre track record and I’m not particularly enthusiastic about the direction they’re heading.

The 1st for Moore is theoretically offsetting a 2025 1st, when they got a 2nd instead. They didn’t straight up trade a first for him. And it wasn’t two drafts, it’s 4. 2022/23/24/25 picks were involved. I did forget about Velus though. What a bad pick.

Have they invested a ton? A 2nd for Claypool, and you can argue a future first was offset for Moore, but absolutely no money when every big passing team is spending like mad on receivers. It has turned into a 4/5 man position group and much like the offensive line you need to constantly add to it regularly. Three offseasons and that’s it, so far from Poles. He should have invested a ton but I would argue he absolutely did not, especially by completely punting his first offseason.
