  1. I get why people who first noticed Harry in the 90s wouldn't think much of him. But he was great before his mind went and a big part of following the 2 successful 80s seasons. I don't get people being worked up about the lovable losers thing. I think you can have a good time getting drunk at the game while still being invested heavily in the success of the team. Harry didn't lack for disappointment in bad Cubs teams. Hell, I'd say Len Kasper has been much more of a "it's perfectly okay if they lose" announcer than Harry.
  2. And it owned I hate to agree with mojo on this, but Harry really was just a hot mess for the last 5-10 years, getting progressively worse each year. It wasn't charming by the end, it was embarrassing. Hearing his broadcasts now evokes some warm childhood nostalgia for sure, but listening to him in the 90's just made me wish for it to end. What Harry was during that time was a perfectly apt embodiment of the whole "lovable losers" identity. It may sound like heresy to some people, but there it is. Everything about the Cubs in the 90's made me wish for it to end. That wasn't Harry's fault.
  3. I like the idea of media members who exist to critique other media members, but Sherman exists solely to fellate his fellow scribes and it is disgusting.
  4. It's no less deserved than any other announcers status as a legend. He's known throughout the country in a job that is typically only seen by a comparatively small local market. It's not just Cubs fans that elevate him.
  5. You also failed to see that the Bears are getting a slightly superior player of the same age in lieu of Paea in my scenario. Bird in hand. It seems a lot easier to keep your slightly inferior player rather than bet you can go out and get somebody else to replace him. That plan most likely results in you coming away with neither guy. Don't have the bird in the hand though. Paea is just as available as Williams is. Granted, you can sign Paea before you can Williams, but you are then gambling on Paea's fit. And again, he's not a good 3-4 fit based on lack of length. And despite his skillset suggesting he can, he hasn't played 3-tech nearly enough to show he can be a full-time, long-term option there. It is always easier to bring back your own guy rather than go out and get somebody else's guy.

  7. I decided not to explain to wonder if anybody noticed. Don't look on the ice.

  9. I don't see how the Bears are in a position where they can benefit from letting talented young defensive players walk.
  10. FFS; is that Harry Caray? Hank Hill
  11. In a world where tenure/time served holds sway over ability, it would make sense to me that the new guy would be forced to move off his normal duties if he wants to work with the organization that already has people at his position. And baseball is absolutely a world in which tenure/time serves holds sway. In the normal course of business there's no doubt to me that a guy like Russell would be forced to play a different position if he was called up to a team that had a competent Bryant at 3B and Castro at SS, and LF may be the most likely destination, given the lack of interesting guys playing there already. But the Cubs might do things differently enough that they might actually have Bryant make the move in that situation.
  12. Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 1m1 minute ago Montreal WR Duron Carter, son of HOF WR and ESPN analyst Cris Carter, is closing in on an agreement with the Indianapolis Colts.

  14. Chicago Bears ‏@ChicagoBears 23s23 seconds ago #Bears have reached agreement w/ Clint Hurtt to be their outside LBs coach; he served as assistant defensive line coach w/ Bears in 2014. Former assistant defensive line coach becoming outside LB coach. Does this indicate what sort of scheme they may be looking at? Maybe, or maybe not...
  15. Bears going back to that deep and fruitful Canadian well. Chicago Bears ‏@ChicagoBears 17s17 seconds ago #Bears have signed WR John Chiles to a reserve/future contract; he has spent time w/ Saints & Rams and played in CFL w/ Toronto Argonauts.
  16. That's because baseball is the one sport where effort doesn't really matter. You cannot really take half hearted swings and there would be no benefit to it. Although there is plenty of benefit of not going balls out to make a tackle or deliver a check. Pitchers could theoretically take something off, but in practice that may have other negative affects and instead they just throw fewer pitches than normal.
  17. that's exactly what baseball needs, more subjectively enforced rules trying to solve a non-existent problem.
  18. I'm just saying what Manfred said. So move all three OF to the right side and let the 3B play deeper than usual? Unless you make very strict positional determinations you cannot enforce it and therefore it's a bad idea because very strict positional determinations are dumb.
  19. I'm in agreement here. Let the managers put the players wherever. Let them figure out what works. How hardcore would it be codified? Could the SS not line up in the outfield grass? In late inning games with runners on, when you need a DP, could you not bring one of the outfielders in? Who gets to decide what's a standard array of fielders and what's a "radical shift?" You're overreacting to this. They'd just enforce that a team would have to put 2 players on each side of 2nd base...there's not some arbitrary "too radical" evaluation to be made. Players will be free to make other defensive adjustments, further out...further in...no doubles...etc. I don't think it'd be a big deal. I don't know that it's necessary immediately...give it a few years here to see if batter start to adjust to it. What about moving the LF to a very deep 3B and the 3B to a normal SS?

  21. Glad to see he's continuing Selig's legacy of trying to ruin the game at every opportunity Bud did no such thing Couldn't talk about baseball without running it down. Okay, he did that one thing. But most of his moves were good.
  22. how would the hitter get his signs from the third base coach? One foot in one foot out

  24. Chicago Cubs ‏@Cubs 2m2 minutes ago #Cubs claimed RHP Gonzalez Germen off waivers from Texas. Germen struck out 64 batters over 64.2 IP w/ a 4.31 ERA in 54 relief appearances.
  25. A 7-day break doesn't affect me nearly as much for NHL than a 4-day break for MLB. All the regular off days in the NHL familiarizes me to not having a game on.
