  1. Fell asleep during the 2nd OT intermission and watched the 3rd OT this morning. That was intense. Detroit dominated. The end of the 3rd period was great I was really hoping Pittsburgh would extend the series and I'm looking forward to game 6. Being in that city during the Cubs series was a lot of fun to see all the excitement surrounding the Pens.
  2. With a full season and a half sample size, I think we have a very good idea of their talent-level. And it's mediocre. They've got some wowee young bats. They used to have starting pitching depth, but injuries have obliterated it. They still have no bullpen and a bad defense. They're a mediocre team capable of putting up mid-80s wins. If that beats the Cubs, then these aren't the Cubs we think they are. I think the 1.5 years was enough to prove that their talent was what their record showed it to be, more or less. But that talent is also likely not at its peak, and could very easily have the potential for many more wins over the next 1.5-2 years.
  3. Is Travis Henry worth thinking about? Denver doubting his commitment just adds to the list of negatives about him, but going strictly by on field performance, he could be a significant addition to the Bears backfield situation. If they could bring him into camp, I would have to think the competition between Henry, Benson and Forte would be tremendous. Unless he absolutely refuses to be a share the load RB, I would think being released by Denver would act as a wakeup call and a team like the Bears would be one of the better fits.
  4. Yup. They'd want at least one more high-level player as well. And that's if they view Pie and Hill as reasonably valuable, which they may not. I think it depends on a few things. If they stay within 5 games of the division leader, they most likely aren't going to be dealing him unless somebody blows them away. If they fade significantly though, they may be looking to get whatever they can. Atthat point, there's no telling what the best offer would be. How many teams will want a rental? Sure others could beat the Cubs offer, but that doesn't mean those teams will actually make those offers.
  5. My favorite part about him is how he tries to come across as a tough guy in his bio section on the blog. It reads to me like, "they tell me I have to write something here but I'm Steve Freaking Rosenbloom, 30 years in the business and everybody already knows me."
  6. i like this guy... I was just about to comment on that.
  7. 1) Most people don't come out and say, "I subscribe to hateful stereotypes." 2) I did not accuse him. I made a comment based on the fact that he is one of many people who assert that Reinsdorf is cheap in spite of incontrovertable facts. That was a clear accusation and way out of line. There was no hint of anything of the sort. People whine about cheap owners, they always do. Is misguided as it may be, to call it anti-semitism is asinine. I disagree. Its a definite possibility in this case. You can't throw out accusations like that so willy-nilly. You had no proof, there was no hint of anything anti-semitic. Then please help me understand how the hell anyone could think this about Reinsdorf. Its not enough to just use the "people complain" throw-away, IMO. So now it's my job to defend people against your asinine accusations? I don't care if my explanation holds water with you, it's freaking obvious. People whine about owners' cheapness in every sport in every city. I've made several "the Trib is not cheap" arguments over the years yet people insisted they were.

  10. Its a bit over the top to call it horrible. Lieber can easily throw 3-4 innings regardless of what happens. But whats the point? Then he's unavailable tomorrow. Why not just let Lilly try to pitch out of it. My point is, I love that Lou manages to win every game. But once in awhile you have to accept that you're getting your butt kicked and try to look at the long term picture, which is getting Lilly on track and not overtaxing your pen. Is it that big of deal if Lieber is unavailable tomorrow? Why not get him some extended work? Getting Lilly out now will not prevent him from getting back on track. I'd like him to pitch himself out of his issues. But then again, if he's throwing 83 MPH theres no way that's happening. He threw 62 completely ineffective pitches today. It's not like he was pulled in the first. I don't see him pitching himself out of his issues between pitch 63 and 80 something.
  11. The away hits feature on gameday is pretty impressive right now.

But once in awhile you have to accept that you're getting your butt kicked and try to look at the long term picture, which is getting Lilly on track and not overtaxing your pen. It's Jon Lieber. He hasn't pitched in 5 days. He's the long guy. I don't really care if he's unavailable tomorrow.
  13. Lilly is a fairly important part of this team and is under contract for 2.5 more seasons. If it's Marquis maybe you make him take his medicine, but I see no reason to punish Lilly.
  14. Lieber and Cotts should be able to finish it, leaving the important bullpen people fresh.
  15. I have no idea what Ron Santo is talking about right now.
  16. It is the easiest complaint of all for fans and media to whine about. People like whining about people who have more money than them and assign to those people negative character traits.
  17. Not sure why you think people are knocking the DeVry shuttle. Most everybody is praising it. I used it once and it was fine. But I much prefer parking a few blocks south on the street for free and bar hopping my way up to the game. Plus, who wants to rush home after a Cubs game anyway?
  18. And Urlacher is expected to participate in the upcoming mini-camp. Not sure if this is a sign that he's caving or that he feels the Bears are negotiating in good faith.
  19. Yeah I agree. Some guys just get into a nice groove and as long as they don't change anything mechanically, they're fine. I would agree to an extent, however, in this specific instance Zambrano was hardly in a groove. He was fighting himself all night.
  20. It's just a translation idiom. The "oh" sound in Japanese can be written in English as "oh", "ou" or "o" depending often simply on whomever's doing the writing; the Japanese catcher for the Mariners has his name on official materials and his jersey as "Johjima" despite the fact that when people were discussing him prior to his signing by Seattle, "Joujima" and "Jojima" were both used. I have enough faith in the Cubs' front office that they consulted with Kosuke upon signing him as to how he wanted his name spelled exactly in official materials. Why Kouske, why?
  21. You realize Livan hasn't been fine in years? What are you talking about? He's pitched over 200 innings just about every year of his career. Just because he sucks now doesn't mean that his excessive innings are why. When would you consider Livan to have been "fine"? He came into the league on fire as a young pitcher, threw an absurd amount of innings and loss all effectiveness. Just because he's been healthy enough to throw 200 innings doesn't mean he's been healthy enough to pitch effectively.
  22. So, in honor of Rusch's return to Wrigley... EDITED The Rockies don't have anymore important games this year.
  23. This is never, ever, ever, ever happening. I wish people would stop talking about it. I wasn't aware that you had a say. I obviously won't go and bet that it will happen, but it's not the sure thing to not happen you keep making it out to be, especially if the Heat aren't interested in taking Beasley at #2. It just seems like the NBA equivalent of the "Murton, Wuertz and EPatt for Dunn? Too much?" trade offers that sometimes get thrown around. Seeing that no team has ever snagged the first two picks in a draft, and that this is regarded as a two-player draft, and that Paxson is notoriously uncreative and boring, and that NBA salary rules surrounding trades are really complex, it's not happening. Has anybody ever traded for the #2 pick in the draft without giving up a fairly high 1st round pick and/or a star player? If the Bulls also had like the 5th, or a player at all resembling a star, maybe they'd be able to work something out. But I agree it would be rather ridiculous to think they could get the 1 and 2.
  24. You realize Livan hasn't been fine in years? He lost almost all his effectiveness, quite possibly because of the way Dusty used and abused him. It was a stupid short-sighted decision by Lou. Zambrano wasn't sharp. Thankfully it's been somewhat rare, and hopefully it neither hurts Zambrano nor happens again. But it's moronic to extend a guy in a game you are losing with the plan of making up for it by pulling him early in his next start. Who is to say what situation will come up in his next start? Wood and Marmol may be unavailable, or maybe the night before they have a long extra innings affair that burns through the pen. You essentially handicap yourself in a future game for absolutely no benefit to the current game. Plus, you risk the pitcher's health and effectiveness.
