  1. Bobby Wade was an okay possession receiver who got cut because he dropped too many punts. He's hardly thrived away from Chicago though. As for your point on Vasher, it's not like the Bears are getting beat by QBs standing in the pocket for 6-7 seconds. They aren't pressuring the QB, but Vasher isn't covering guys either. They are getting beat on quick pass plays for the most part, which is very much a secondary problem.
  2. Cuban charged with insider trading today. If this goes anywhere it could very easily eliminate any chance he has of buying the Cubs.
  3. Seriously? It was a gimmick hire, but man, I thought they'd let it ride a while.
  4. No, it's not an either/or. They should trade him before then. Letting valuable players go is a bad way to run a team.
  5. I hope our rotation is excellent and the lineup is outstanding because you never know what non dominant relievers (guys like Gregg) are going to give you year-to-year.
  6. What? What in the world are you trying to say? The situation should be resolved by the Cubs no longer employing him when he's not good, not by forcing him out the door for no good reason when he is still very clearly a good pitcher.
  7. Except Hendry made it clear Marmol to closer is a very likely scenario. So, this series of unfortunate events is going to leave the Cubs without their 2nd best reliever, with their best reliever in less meanginful situations, and a very forgetable reliever taking over the important role. Sweet. All we need now is Melky and the offseason is looking brilliant.
  8. I don't understand your arguement in favor of Gregg, none of his numbers are exciting. I'm really not making an argument in favor of Gregg, just stating some facts. However, BAA in the low .200's, OBP in the low .300's, and SLG in the low .300's is pretty decent, no? pretty decent does not excite me. Mike Wuertz has been pretty decent for years and the Cubs keep screwing around with him.
  9. I don't care if he's a closer or not, he's a very effective pitcher on a team with a very large payroll and very minimal top talent in line to replace people. Yes it is a no brainer.
  10. I have no idea if this part is true. Maybe Wood threw this out there to make the fans think he was willing to play the good guy again. But it goes back to the very odd way that Hendry spoke about essentially wanting Kerry Wood to leave. He didn't talk like a GM that wanted Wood back on team friendly terms, he explicitly said he wanted him to play for another team even if he couched it in friendly PC words. While I completely understand not wanting to go 4/50 on Wood, effectively closing the door to any potential one year, or one year plus performance options type deal is nonsensical. Never in his time with the Cubs has Hendry been one to be coy. He's up front and honest. When he said he wanted Kerry gone, it didn't appear to be a negotiating ploy. Jim is a guy who says, "we want player X back if we can fit it in our plans". He doesn't say, "we don't want you" and then come back 2 months later and say, "okay we'll give you one year".
  11. I don't understand your arguement in favor of Gregg, none of his numbers are exciting.
  12. You're wrong. Wood on a one year was a no-brainer.
  13. You completely got the wrong idea. While that's not the case in this specific example, that has been the case by at least a couple people.
  14. Huh? How is Peavy our number 1 target? Our number 1 target from day 1 has been a left handed hitting 3/4/5 hitter. Who is an athlete and has at least 1 Q and 1 V in his name. And can catch the ball Okay, I'm stupid. Who the heck are you guys talking about? Omar Vizquel? They are talking about Hendry's odd obsession with narrowing down targets to specific parameters, ala left hand hitting speed guys, etc.
  15. To me Harris sounds like a guy whose feelings are hurt. Urlacher sounds more arrogant/confident that they will step up when it matters.
  16. He may have a point, but that's essentially what Dan Hampton says everytime he opens his mouth. My guess is it's going to be ignored.
  17. The scary thing is it probably doesn't. Instead of paying $10m to one great relief arm they will probably spend $12-15m on a bunch of mediocre arms. Or maybe they sign someone good like Cruz or Affeldt and are better off with the same or similar money alotted, plus possibly having 4 picks if it's Affeldt. You don't know Hendry. People keep talking about Cruz being some secret cheap option, but he's listed as the secret cheap option everywhere. If he doesn't get a big contract his agent is incompetent. There are teams much more desperate for bullpen help than the Cubs.
  18. He's nowhere close to awesome and he's only a year younger.
  19. I like to shorten quotes and the second sentence wasn't meaningful to the discussion. Benching a player is one thing. Getting him to change jobs is another. If the Cubs are contemplating benching Harden, they are idiots. I don't think it's a bad idea to try Harden in the pen, however, I don't think it's at all likely that he would want to do that. And despite "not having a choice" players refuse such moves all the time. We aren't talking about moving a guy who can't crack the rotation, we're talking about the most effective starter on the team.
  20. I'm worried about that game, being sandwiched between two games against divisional rivals (Packers and Vikings). Rams aren't very good, but they had a stretch where they proved they can beat some decent teams, especially if they aren't focused. I think that stretch is done. A new coach bounce is not unheard of, but Haslett is a goof and that team sucks. If the Bears are any good that won't be a problem.
  21. The scary thing is it probably doesn't. Instead of paying $10m to one great relief arm they will probably spend $12-15m on a bunch of mediocre arms.
  22. I'm going to doubt Harden would accept that move. I'm going to doubt Harden would have any choice other than sitting out. Yeah, we know it didn't work for Jason Marquis. Baseball players only do what they are told to do. Please, it's major league baseball. If a starting pitcher approaching free agency does not want to pitch in the bullpen, you can be damn sure he will fight any potential move to the bullpen and 99% of the time he's going to win that battle (even if it means losing the war).
  23. No, not really. It's much different from a player making a public statement. Teams don't say we're not going to be offering him a contract. Teams don't say we want him to get a contract somewhere else. That may sound like a good way to do negotiations in the real world, but baseball isn't the real world. The Cubs just told Wood to leave.
  24. I'm going to doubt Harden would accept that move.
  25. The only benefit would be to basically tell other teams don't bother getting into a bidding war with us, we aren't going to offer anything longterm. These comments effectively lower Wood's value on the market. Teams probably assumed they had to offer X more than the Cubs to get him to move. Now the possibility remains that nobody will feel the need to offer Wood a big contract to get it, and maybe he'll stay on the market and eventually resign for a one year deal. However, I completely agree with you and have no idea what benefit there could be to show him the door rather than letting him walk if he doesn't want to sign. The bottom line is the Cubs are worse right now than they were at the end of the season.
