  1. Wildcat formation on a regular basis creative? I don't think so. It took him a year and a half to figure out how to throw to Olsen. The Bears are an extremely vanilla offense. I said nothing of the Wildcat. and Turner has always had decent plays in his playbook (Des Howard playaction to beat the Packers), it's simply that he brain-farts when it comes to gametime playcalling 90% of the time. They are "vanilla" becuase of his inability to call a game, not becuase he cant draw up a good play. The whole point is somebody thinks the Bears will draft Pat White in the 2nd to run the wildcat. Any offensive coordinator can draw up an interesting play. Actual creative OC's figure out how to implement them on a regular basis and get positive results.

  3. But talking about reaching for guys is not the same as you portraying as some crazy draft guy that always does the unexpected. Drafting a wildcat back in the 2nd round would be unexpected, but it would be unlike anything else he's done. He reaches and takes small school guys earlier than most would, but that has nothing to do with Pat White. And again, Ron Turner is the offensive coordinator. I don't see the creativity to make something like that work, or be worthwhile.
  4. This is why I don't get all the over the top Big East love. It's a huge conference. You are going to have more good teams when you do that. They do have some very good teams and are the best conference, but it's never talked about in perspective. And the abundance of crappy-mediocre teams are ignored.
  5. Late 2nd I believe. He traded down and took Manning, then got Hester later. It wasn't really a reach, he was talented as heck and filled a need they had. White isn't 2nd round worthy and doesn't do anything the Bears can take advantage of, plus they have tons of other actual needs, not part-time QB.
  6. You don't see it that way, but I don't think you're giving Angelo enough "credit" in his ability to do the unexpected. What the heck does that even mean? What does he do that's so crazy? Everybody knew he needed Tackle help last year, and he drafted one. They needed RB and WR as well, and he took those in 2 and 3. He's reached on guys like Bazuin and Wolfe, but what in the world has been so unexpected by him?
  7. I will never understand the internet phenomenon of a guy who yells really loud calling basketball games. that's cause you're an old white man Bill Simmons is older and whiter and he started this whole thing. As an aside, it was a year or two ago that I first learned Gus was black. I'd heard his voice calling Knicks games in the background. i was stunned too, but i think it's because i don't think of gus as a black guy's name When I first started reading Simmons rave about the guy, I was picturing Ernie Johnson.

  9. The Bears can't afford to gamble a high pick on such an unlikely to succeed player, and I don't see anyway they implement a successful creative "wildcat" type scheme with Ron Turner as offensive coordinator.

  11. May, June, July, August, September 2008. If he stays at that pace in April, May and June 2009, you will really have to consider doing something. He's 33, has had a major wrist injury and is experiencing leg problems right now.
  12. While this concern is certainly legitimate, especially if his swing still has a huge hole in it, I'd like to give him more than 17 sporadic at-bats before casting judgment. Perhaps he's just rusty like a lot of players at this stage of spring training. We're 24 days into the Cactus League season. Isn't that enough time to shake off most of the rust? Fukudome hasn't been playing in the Cactus League.... And as for the others, not all of them have been healthy enough to play every day, and a lot of times guys carry over their "rustiness" into April.
  13. I knew it wouldn't be long untill someone played the "small sample size" card. The numbers are still real, and he continues to impress with every opportunity he gets. I probably should have quoted his career .800 + OPS through the minors. As long as he keeps hitting, how do you keep him out of the lineup? I understand that with more Ab's, his numbers might dwindle, and if so, fine, he is still a great bench bat. Its time to stop assuming DLee is going to hit like he did in '05. Hoff may very well be out best offinsive option at 1B this year. Thats reality. I don't know about "may very well be". It would be extremely unlikely. A Lee/Hoff platoon might be the best option, but even that could be a longshot. Lee's 2008 numbers against RHP - .286./344/.441 was well below his career average, and may wind up being better than Hoff can do on a regular basis.
  14. Given a couple of the strange situations on the roster, Fukudome in AAA is not out of the realm. If Fukudome stays, there is only room for: Backup catcher Miles Johnson And 2 of: Gathwright/Hoffpauir/2nd backup infielder If Fukudome goes to AAA all of those players can make the team.
  15. Yeah, definitely not happening. And poor is a little bit of a stretch: he still got on base at a .361 clip last year and had a 110 OPS+. Certainly not what you want in the three spot because of the low slugging percentage (in the 400's), but not bad enough to be benched in favor of a guy who has 73 career big league at bats. The OPS+ was 94 in the second half. His OPS was below 800 in every month but April. "Poorly as he did late last year" was probably taking it easy on him.
  16. Well, he wasn't nearly as good as his reputation and he acted like a child when the Cubs refused to offer him a contract he didn't deserve (and he ultimately had to settle for much less from Arizona). Plus, he's just a smug dude. But the disdain is probably wearing off.
  17. The only way that #1 happens is if Lee suffers a season-ending injury, and the Cubs can't work out a trade with another team for a first baseman for the rest of the season. Item #2 is possible, but not probable. I guess that makes it a "bold" prediction. Well, Lee is already banged up, and if he plays as poorly as he did late last year, I'm not sure how long Lou will stick with him, assuming Hoff is hitting. Highly doubtful though.
  18. How so? The Yankees have fans that have the cash to spend more than many make in a year to sit in a seat. If you can make money, why shouldn't you? yeah they also have a lot of very rich corporations based in NYC. i would guess that 95% of the very expensive seats are sold to companies who either take customers to games, or reward their employees with great seats for a ballgame. they're not expecting joe blow to drop 200 grand on a season ticket. There's a good amount fewer of those now.
  19. Wait, seriously? A small stretch of bad play and now you refuse to watch the team, even though they are still the 4th seed?
  20. Because they are winning right now.
  21. The only people that clamored for a first round TE were people who didn't pay attention to the fact that they had a good capable TE on the roster already. That was never a need in the first round. Angelo isn't all that surpsing. Last year's Tackle pick was obvious, the Olsen pick was obvious as well. Teams in need of a starting WR right now rarely ever find them in the first round of the draft. The Bears won't find one this year. They could find a guy capable of starting at tackle, and they absolutely should draft one. The line is a mess, and it doesn't matter who plays receiver if the line stays as is.
  22. I'm too angry with the way this club has turned into a steaming pile of crap to blame the officials for anything. I need my team to put in their licks before I feel justified calling the officials out. The Hawks had more than one call go their way last night. It was a team loss, not a ref loss.
  23. Which is why Jerry needed to get another WR. Hester is slightly above average. Slightly above average WRs are easily replaceable. I'm not sure how he qualifies as only slightly above average, and I'm not sure why anybody would assume Hester will never improve upon what he did last year.
  24. I agree. They should never have told him he could be the number one receiver. Why would you want to move possibly the best returner in NFL history out of that position? This one is on Lovie. Maybe because you want your player with the most ability to score touchdowns to have more than 3-4 chances to score? Teams were kicking away from Hester already. He wasn't getting near the returns he should have. But the Bears were getting the ball at the 40 every time they did that. I'll take that. The other team got the ball on the 5 sometimes as well. The bottom line is you don't build a sustainable contender on the back of a kick returners. You need a real offense. Hester is the Bears best reciever, and he's not at all easily replacable. He can still return the occasional kick, but they have other guys who are pretty darn good at that gig.
