Meredith is the one who cracks me up pretty much everytime she speaks. I like horrible drunks. Kevin is close, but sometimes he can just be overly stupid. Stanley has gotten pretty stale. But I'm looking forward to Kevin on the phones and Stanley as the productivity czar. -

Kind of backs up what redivycub says about him being a douchebag. He's all talk and show, with the no-casual dress nonsense. He is smart to say nobody is happy with where they are and that they are on their own 2 yard line, but it's all talk. Its smart marketing man talk, but it's largely meaningless. I think guys like him are almost douchebags by definition. It may be all "talk," but it's what makes him successful. Now, I'm not saying turning around the Hawks took a rocket scientist. It was pretty freaking obvious what needed to be done and he did it. But just the same, he's good at what he does. I don't think it's what makes him successful at all. It's what appears to make him successful. The Blackhawks season has been a success because they've done a lot of catering to their fans during a season in which they've had great young talent and spent money on free agents. Anyway, forcing business attire on people doesn't make or break success. It's meaningless. "Holding people accountable" is just a bunch of talk. They aren't running their team like a bunch of morons, congrats. -
Perhaps, they've been interested all along and now it's public. I can't see why Angelo wasn't all over this, after the season did he not babble on about the need for a QB? He did, but then he changed his tune. I still think he's been interested in Cutler since the story started. The lack of public, "we're in love with him" proclamations means nothing. according to the article, it would have been tampering if the Bears were public about their interest. I have no idea how the Jets get away with it here then Lovie and Jerry have both commented that it would be tampering. The Jets stories, that I know of, don't consist of their people being quoted about wanting Cutler.

You'd probably have to take the most technically sound good soldier type WR if the Bears are going to make it work. Anybody who might give off the impression of dogging it a bit, or freelancing too much, or being a little "head strong", is going to run into issues with the Bears. WR tend to be unique characters, and the Bears don't do well with that. Throw one of 'em first round bonus money, and the odds for failure with the Bears are probably as high or higher than any other team in the league.

92 or not (~10 innings into his spring), if/when he's on the mound, I expect ace-type results.

I'm scared to death about the Bears drafting a wide receiver early, given their absolutely horrible record of developing their own and their irrational need to banish their guys who don't fit perfectly into their nonexistent scheme.

That's a stretch. They still need to address OL. You don't ignore it for 5 years and then suddenly solve it with one pick and a couple stopgap signings. If BPA is a tackle, they should probably draft him. They still lack at guard and will need to replace Kreutz within a couple years. And who even knows if Williams will be any good. Anyway, they are still desperate for multiple upgrades that they have to address in the draft. The 2007 draft was the, hey whatever we feel like doing we will draft. This team isn't talented or deep enough to treat this draft as anything but crucial.

Odds are they are going to lose to NJ whether they are focused or not. A point would be nice though. -
I like Harvin more than most Bears fans seem to. But I think this opens the door for the Bears to go completely off the radar with their pick. I still think that they think they can get a good WR in the 2nd. I don't think there's much difference in the WRs who will be there at 18 vs. those that will be there in the early 40s. Granted the Bears may have to maneuver or have someone slip, but I have seen mocks w/ Robiske and Nicks going in the 50s. I think you could see the Bears wait on a WR til the 2nd and OL til the 3rd. I think this signing opens the door for a pick like Peria Jerry at DT or Vontae Davis at CB if they stay at 18. Yeah, that would make sense. If 1.OL 2.WR was most likely before, they can still wait until 2 to get a receiver and draft just about any position in the first.

More like 2 horrific seasons. You can't keep the Yankees and Red Sox down for long. But it wouldn't be hard for a team like the Cubs, with a shaky minor league system and questionable personel decision making abilities, to stay down for a few years. Look at Seattle, Texas, the Dodgers. These are free spending teams that really screwed themselves to varying degrees. Plus, we don't know what Ricketts will do with the team. There's no way he continues to grow payroll at the rate it's grown in recent years, and the only reason the Cubs are any good is because it's grown so much so quickly. If they are going to win longterm, they will have to do some things very differently. -
The Tait signing was supposed to be them signing a franchise tackle. They overpaid him in order to force KC not to sign the offer sheet. This seems much more stopgap to me. No chance Shaffer's actually good? I wouldn't say that. I'm just saying the Tait signing was much more of an aggressive franchise affecting move, while this guy is some sort of combo fallback/stopgap player. Plus, he's not young, he won't be around for very long.

Pat White is a bigger candidate for huge reach in the 2nd than BPA. This tackle signing isn't horrible, but I don't like what it signals. The Bears are going to go with patchwork line again. They will go into 2010 still needing to draft young linemen.

I have no problem with trading Gaudin if we get something decent in return. I also wouldn't hate cutting Vizcaino (or trading him for something minor) to give Patton a shot. I just thought goony was lumping Gaudin and Vizcaino together a bit much. Gaudin has some real value, Vizcaino does not. If I misunderstood his comments, that's my mistake, though. I made it clear that Vizcaino was the real problem. But Gaudin gets lumped because he's also a middle reliever who is struggling big time but virtually guaranteed a spot because of contract situations.

No, it's nothing like that. Nobody with any sense of logic would think so. If you got in a car accident because you were drunk, you have a problem. If you hurt yourself while drinking to the point of not being able to perform your job, you have problem.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't make sense. I said he doesn't have a track record of sustained success worthy of a guaranteed job. Contract situations are the only reason he's nearly a lock. He has filled in admirably as a starter, but he's also pitched fairly unimpressively for stretches. Since hurting himself while drunk last year. His lack of top talent, the reason he's not a starting pitcher or a top notch reliever, suggests he's just another inconsistent arm.

Yeah, I don't really understand wanting to dump Gaudin for nothing either. I don't see how Patton is a better bet to produce than Gaudin. If it was a matter of whether to pay Gaudin ~$3 million or Patton the minimum, then I could see the argument, but we're paying Gaudin either way, so I don't see the problem with keeping him. I wouldn't mind it, however, if Hendry could work out some kind trade to keep Patton. Not giving up too much, but Patton seems to have potential. Is everybody willing to throw Gaudin away for nothing or wanting to dump him for nothing? I feel like I missed something.

Gaudin's performance has been very inconsistent. I don't have love for Patton, I dislike veteran relievers assured of spots despite horrible performances because of contract situations. Again, Gaudin has 449 career innings that show he is NOT horrible. It shows that he is about league average and can go from the pen to the rotation. That has value, especially on this team. I don't think people realize how thin our starting pitching depth could get in a real hurry. You can't go trading away guys that are proven to be average in that role just because you want to make way for a guy with good spring training numbers. You disputed the statement that he doesn't have a track record of sustained success. He's been inconsistent. And ever since he became a Cub, he's sucked. Middle reliever types and the kind of guys who occasional spot start, guys who aren't good enough to start on a regular basis in the rotation or be lockdown relievers, are notoriously inconsistent. The fact that his average performance in the majors has been relatively average doesn't change anything.

He was a god awful drunk who entered Lou's doghouse immediately and hasn't shown any glimmer of hope since. A god awful drunk? Where does this stuff even come from? There's a rumor about his injury happeneing when he was drunk and suddenly he's a drunk? Adults are allowed to drink guys. A god awful pitcher who is a drunk. He's a drunk because he got injured drinking. I'm all for boozing it up, but when it gets in the way of your work, you have a problem. C'mon dude. He happened to get hurt when when he was supposedly drinking. That means he's a drunk? How many players drink from time to time? A LOT. Any one of them could have slipped and fallen while they were drunk. Calling Gaudin a drunk because of one incident is not fair at all. It's ridiculous. What if you slipped while drunk and couldn't work for the next couple weeks. Would that mean you have a problem and are a drunk? No, it would just mean you got unlucky. Gaudin is no different from anybody else. If your drinking leads to problems at work or family life, you have a drinking problem. Dude.

You're acting like the guy couldn't go into an important game cause he was still throwing up from the night before. I am not. You can choose to read it however you'd like, but every indication is he got hurt while drunk. That's a problem, and hardly somebody I want to see guaranteed big money and a roster spot, regardless of performance issues (and he has absolutely sucked since putting on a Cubs uniform).
