  1. I don't think that is the case here at all. HCCF made a stupid comment, and that's the beginning and end of it. People thought Corey could be really good if things worked out. There's no hyperbole involved, they thought he could be really good. And it was not at all unrealistic to think that way, given his obvious skills and his immediate transition to the pro game. People debated the merits of how quickly he was called up and how he was utilized once he was called up, and some people held onto the hopes for far longer than others. But there was nothing wrong with any of that. It's just ridiculous to come on here years after the fact and claim people on this site that "instantly lift a 17/18 year old kid up onto a pedestal and crown him the next Willie Mays before he even plays a game." It's an unnecessary and completely inaccurate criticism of fans who thought and hoped a highly touted prospect could come up and perform well. Everytime a prospect fails people come out of the woodworks to make fun of or criticize those who had hopes for that prospect. Critique the paid professionals whose job it is to acquire and develop these prospects, but there's no good reason to heap scorn on fans who hoped the kid would succeed.
  2. Two posts after you called my post ignorant, this is hilarious. This isn't the the neutral-zone trap, clutch-and-grab NHL, and it isn't Gretzky's era. It's something in between. Size, speed and skill all matter. Or do you not think Byfuglien and Eager were important for the Hawks in these two series? They played a role, but were also absent for good chunks of the postseason. You are quiblying over 1 inch differences in bodies.
  3. Oh grow up. Practically everybody on here has expressed shock and surprise at how well this team has played. And people are suggesting it's possible for a 20 year old hockey player to develop. That's hardly a homer/myopic sentiment.
  4. IF you can keep Toews and Kane to reasonable contracts, then we're great. But I see a young, flashy, American-born star with strong ties to another part of the country, I think it's reasonable to worry another team might overpay him. He was born in Buffalo. Big freaking deal. He also played youth hockey in Michigan and London as well. Practically every player has strong ties to another team's city. Buffalo isn't even guaranteed to have a team for the longterm, and they can hardly afford to overpay anybody. Kane is building huge ties to Chicago right now. His marketing opportunities are skyrocketting in a city that is blowing away anything northwest NY has to offer in terms of passion for the team and its players. It's like what everybody always said about Kerry Wood, he had just as much ties to Texas as Kane has to Buffalo. But when a guy starts getting praised as an athlete in Chicago, and starts celebrating with a Chicago girl or four, he, more often than not, ends up staying.
  5. Pittsburgh doesn't have Seabrook, let alone Keith or Campbell, to worry about as well. And Toews could probably compare reasonably with Malkin, but he doesn't belong in the conversation with Crosby and Kane belongs in the conversation with neither. That's half my point, Kane and Toews don't have to get paid the same as those two guys. And it's not like Pittsburgh doesn't have any high paid players.
  6. Jim McMahon played 2 years in Green Bay and he's not exactly putting his life at risk when he shows up to Wrigley Field or any other Chicago establishments. They aren't the same player, but Favre obviously built up a lot more equity in Green Bay than McMahon did in Chicago. He hasn't said anything negative about the fans, just guy who ran him out of town, just like a lot of ex-Bears bad mouthed the McCaskeys. Then again, unlike McMahon, Favre shouldn't be in a position where he as to make appearances in Wisconsin to make a living. Time will absolutely heal the wounds. There will be tons of fans at his HOF induction, and he'll be worshipped whenever he walks into Lambau.
  7. I like Toews better as well. But again, if Pittsburgh can keep Malkin and Crosby, the Blackhawks can keep Toews and Kane. They should lock them both up for 3-4 years this offseason.
  8. That was easy Anybody find the staples logo amusing accompanying this photo?
  9. I'm trying to figure out why your biggest fear is that Buffalo will throw a ton of money at him and the Blackhawks won't be able to match. Seems to me with the argument you are making you should be more than happy to see him taken off the team in a couple years, or that your biggest fear is that they will actually match whatever offer he gets.
  10. The Blackhawks have me completely distracted from the mediocre start to the Cubs season. I didn't realize there was a Peavy/Harden matchup slated for tonight. With Ramirez out for a while, Lee still not looking like he's even the pre-2005 Lee, and very little hope for outside help in the lineup the Cubs are going to have to seriously consider bolstering their pitching staff. If they remain a mediocre lineup, they need to try and turn it into a top 2-3 run prevention squad.
  11. He's 20 years old, 5-10, and generously listed at 175 but is probably closer to 160. Unless he grows four inches and adds 45 pounds of muscle, minimum, he's never going to be able to do those things. Kane is who he is, a cherry-picking offensive threat. He's a wonderful guy to have, but he's not a core of a hockey team. He doesn't have to be 6'2" or 200+ pounds, but you could bet pretty heavily he will easily add 20+ pounds. And he is absolutely a great guy to have as part of a core. No, he isn't the centerpiece, but he's absolutely a core player. He's not some bit player.
  12. He's probably more like a slugger with relatively low OBP. Gets his goals, but doesn't do the "little things" quite as well as you might like.
  13. From most all reports, Corey is a genuinely nice guy. But feel free to be bitter and trash him for a joke. I do not doubt that he is a nice guy, an so are the most MLB players. I am sure Bob Howery is a nice guy to and gave this team a better stretch of performance than Corey but some seem to like to abuse his name. My criticism is from the people that instantly lift a 17/18 year old kid up onto a pedestal and crown him the next Willie Mays before he even plays a game, many did that on our site as well as Cub's scouting system. He is one of my arguments that there should be a minimum and maximum wage for all drafted players Oh ya, wasn't a joke I was serious I am hoping that he did use his money wisely to get an education so we don't see him on ESPN E60 with a segment entitled "How the mighty have Fallen." I wish him the best in life Nobody did that, it's a stupid accusation. Member 2007, maybe need to float back to the post of 2003 A) I posted under a different name before 2007 B) People liking the guy and hoping for the best is not "instantly lift a 17/18 year old kid up onto a pedestal and crown him the next Willie Mays before he even plays a game".
  14. Rule V. We want to hold on to him. And, as long as our starters are, for the most part, going 6 or 7 a night, we can afford to hide him. (It's when they don't that he gets to pitch!) Well, there's that and the fact that there's no reason to worry about wins and losses. But at some point, if they just keep him around and rarely use him, there's no way he's going to harness his control.
  15. I still wonder if Clark could be on the chopping block.
  16. He grew up in Buffalo, but all these guys have grown up in other places. And Buffalo isn't exactly a thriving franchise. The Blackhawks have half a dozen guys with strong Vancouver ties. Chicago has a way of winning over just about every successful athlete that comes to town. There are very few, if any, stars that look to go somewhere else, even if it's home. No, he's not Crosby, but if Pittsburgh can find a way to keep their two stars, I'm certain the Blackhawks will find a way to keep Toews and Kane. After the way the 90's Blackhawks unraveled upon the departures of Roenick, Chelios, et al, I just don't see a marketing man like McDonough stopping short of doing whatever possible to keep both of his poster boys around.
  17. Wait...he really signed a contract that would give him an average of 6.5 million the first 2 years and then drops to 900k in the third year? Why the hell would a team offer him that contract, knowing that this would surely happen when the drop in salary came? You know Thomas Jones planned to do this the second he signed his contract unless he sucked or was injured. They probably did it because they were desperate for RB help and willing to pay market rate for a decent starter who they thought may have only a couple years left in the tank. He could sit out if he wanted, but he doesn't have a ton of leverage. Sitting out at 30 as a RB isn't particularly smart.
  18. How dare you talk about Michael Gaines like that. That one consistently gets me.
  19. They really seem to be talking about him as a non-catching fullback/tight end combo.
  20. If there is going to be a letdown, it's going to be about "being happy to be there" instead of "oh bummer, it's only the Ducks." These guys have had a couple stinker games in the playoffs. I fully expect at least one this upcoming series, regardless of the opponent. But I'd bet they turn it on eventually.

  22. try to keep up fellas.
  23. What a douche, he adapted a sign from an ultimate fighting clothing company to honor christ and his late father? Way to hide your douchebaggery behind the cross you big baby.
  24. He's a pretty good hitter.
