    One of the few legit centers in the organization, I guess. I see a guy who isn't terribly physical, doesn't really score, is so-so in his own zone and hasn't lived up to his reputation on faceoffs. I guess he's a "legit" center, but not by much. How much did that bout with mono affect his play since returning? I don't know anything about the guy, but I have to assume he's not at this best right now. I still see them trying to keep him around.

    I'll put it at 5% that we re-sign Khabibulin and 55% that we re-sign Havlat. I think there is a good chance they resign Pahlsson, and agree with your percentages on the other two. Also, I don't think Huet is really All Star caliber. He's good enough for a good team to win in the postseason, but that's about it.

    I liked Kornheiser well enough for the role he served. Gruden, however, was very good on NFL Network during the draft and I think he'll be good for MNF. I hated that Kornheiser could not get past the scripted topic du jour and he would just hammer it all game long. And there would always be the obvious "okay Tony, here's your 5 minutes, now go with it" times, that would routinely be interrupted by the actual game. I don't think the sarcastic non football character works in the information age. I like Jaws, but he didn't work well with Tony. Maybe that will be better with Gruden, who was genuinely entertaining during the draft.

    The key difference here is that Neifi showed he was pretty terrible before that season, while Scales has put together a good minor league career and hasn't been given a chance to show what he can do in the majors. There's much more reason to believe Scales can be an .800 OPS guy this year than there was for Neifi. Scales can be a nice role player, but people shouldn't be thinking about him being an 800 OPS guy.

    Sometimes you got to read between the lines. Literally if you look very closely it's in between lines 13 and 14 in very small font.

    Sooner or later they have to use some preventive medicine with Harden, no? Are they just going to run him out there every 5 days until he can't go?

    Nope they are startin Wells tomorrow, and skipping Marshall altogether so Lou can finally get him in the pen. Harden is pitching Sunday. Guess Lou finally got his wish. Hooray for skipping the guy whos been really good this year, for a kid making his 2nd career start just so we can have a loogy worth a damn. Seriously? That's the decision? Unbelievable.

    First thought is why not skip Wells, but then I think I'd rather they push him and Marshall back a day, and give Harden 2 more days of rest for his start in STL Tuesday. Harden/Lilly/Dempster is a nice three game matchup for STL.

    No, that is not what the discussion is about. It doesn't matter about wins and losses, but it sure as hell matters when you are talking about the job your GM is doing. If you have $150m to play with and $30m is dead money, that's a waste of resources. That's why the Washington Redskins are a contender on paper every year but never actually win. Hendry keeps covering up mistakes with more money because the team keeps increasing payroll, even through recessions, ownership limbo/changes and disappointing seasons. Overpay a guy like Marquis to eat innings then pay somebody else to take him off your handes, then dump the guy you got back. Overpay relievers with multi year deals, then go out and buy more when those guys fail, or release them as well. How many GMs get the opportunity to buy 2 very expensive corner outfielders in 2 consecutive years?

    Haven't the Cubs had a top 5 NL payroll for Hendry's entire tenure? No. The Cubs are 3rd in payroll this year, but before that were no higher than 7th. I posted earlier in this thread a breakdown of every year the Cubs have had higher than a $90 million payroll (since 2006) and outside of this year they were 7th once and 8th twice in that time span. You are looking at MLB totals, not NL, as was asked. Also opening day payrolls only talk about the 25 man roster on opening day. They don't count things like money paid to other teams to get rid of guys you had to dump because you overpaid them, or released guys or other stuff like that. The Cubs have been among the top NL payrolls ever since Hendry took over, and they are one of the very few to consistently raise their payroll every year. Some top teams, including the Mets, Braves and Dodgers, have actually had years where they cut back due to ownership issues.

    Yes, I'm pretty sure he has. Wasn't he hot on the Prior is still effed up trail even when everybody insisted he was going to be fine?

    It depends on how I can build the rest of my team. Unless I had access to a lot of other good players, Pujols isn't worth it, because the team won't be good until he's in his 40's, I mean mid 30's. It would be nice to benefit from all the hype surrounding whatever records and milestones he's going to reach, but I think you have to take a younger position player.

    The biggest problem with that is the high likelihood of the higher seed getting fewer home dates, which, in addition to playing conditions, means fewer revenues generated by the team that accomplished more during the regular season.

    I don't think it's that big of a deal either way. 2-2-1-1-1 theoretically cuts down on travel, as sometimes there's no need for a 5th game. When it comes down to it, teams just have to win games. Home ice went back and forth in the last series. There have been numerous times when the lower seed "steals" one on the road and then gives it right back at home. I think it's more trouble than it's worth to fix it.

    I don't necessarily agree, but I'm glad it was reduced. He was justified in appealing. And before anybody complains about him sitting today, just remember, he's going to miss 40-60 (or maybe more) games this year. The whole point of having Bradley is making sure he's available in October.

    We should whine about Gaudin being let go regardless, that was a weird move No it wasn't. Gaudin doesn't strike anybody out and he walks way too many. He's not a good pitcher. It's still weird to give a guy a substantial contract over the winter, when you could have just let him walk, and then cutting him when April comes around, especially when there was a more worthwhile candidate to be cut on the roster.
