  1. Yeah, nobody would try ranking baseball teams based on computers after 2 game, why would you do that with college football?
  2. Columbia sucks.
  3. Congratulations. I was not one of the two.
  4. I have no idea why you've come to the conclusion that he doesn't want to play for the Cubs. He just doesn't want to be told how to be a professional baseball player by anyone, Cubs or no Cubs. God I hope we shed this bum in the offseason. This is such a stupid post on multiple levels. Oh please. Enlighten me. A) The first sentence is just meaningless mumbo jumbo. B) Hoping they just shed him is stupid. C) He's nowhere near a bum. D) It was just an all around incredibly stupid post with absolutely no redeeming value or any semblance of intelligence or even logic.
  5. I've been a big proponent of 15/15 with interleague throughout the season for several years, but getting rid of WC isn't going to happen. This isn't 1966, there are 30 teams, limiting the playoffs to just 6 just doesn't fly. It would eliminate the vast majority of teams from contention by August and drive down attendence + ratings. To add value to winning the division, I'd add a WC team in each league. Have the 2 WC teams play a 1 game playoff (great TV) for the right to play the #1 seed, and then the 2 and 3 face each other. This gives the team with the best record the benefit of facing a lesser team, presumably with a less than ideal starting rotation for the first round. As for the interleague, I would stick with 1 "rival" series - rotating home and away every year - then try and match up teams with similar rankings from the previous year. The two WS teams would play each other, perhaps on opening day, or maybe right before or after the ASB. The two LCS losers would face each other, and I'd also save the matchups between the worst teams for the end of the season to try and limit the amount of "interleague games determining the division down the stretch" complaints as well as maybe keeping the potential WS teams from facing each other a couple weeks before the WS.

  7. Ohio State won by 4 and lost by 3, if scoring margin is all that matters how do they rank 4?
  8. Okay, so it was a bad decision at the time by Mannelly. But why was it a bad decision by the coaches to allow him to make such a call? Again, he is the captain out there. It's not like they said, "Hey Pat, remember if you want to call a fake go right ahead", right before he ran out there and then he did. He's the captain, it's part of the job, and it should be part of the job. He made a bad decision.
  9. Yep. This is the way it should go. I'd prefer he declines arbitration, but if he accepts you're paying him a little too much, but there's no long-term commitment. Yeah, there shouldn't be any serious drive to sign an extension, unless the guy wants to pitch for $2m per year or something.
  10. Yea, I'd say bad player development and evaluation coupled with bad contracts. Z has the one contract that they could conceivably move. How is his contract more movable than Lilly or Fukudome's? I had not seen Bruce Miles's blog on the Zambrano story He makes some good points about how difficult it would be to get it done, and how differently Zambrano's quirks are treated than some of his teammates. I'm all for seeing what's out there, but when it comes down to it people are being ridiculous with their "just get rid of him stance" and exaggerating his shortcomings.
  11. I don't blame Mannelly for what he did. I blame the coaching for giving him the authority to make that call. I wasn't nearly as alarmed with the offense as I was pissed at the coaching staff. The game plan on offense was pathetic. So was the blocking. But why are you pissed at the coaching staff for allowing the captain to make such a play?
  12. No, it's not his only job. He needs to block and tackle as well. But, getting the ball into the punter's hands is his main objective. I can't think of a worse choice of position player on special teams to be calling audibles besides the punter. Are you really defending that play? I'm defending the rationale of allowing him to make that call. He's been the best in the business. He doesn't just run out there and put his head between his legs. He stands and looks at how the opposition is lined up. There are several worse options, including every other lineman and the gunners. The people who need to think on a punt are the long snapper, the up man and the punter, and given that the long snapper is a captain, obviously he has the authority to make some decisions out there.
  13. Not a bad thought? It most certainly is a bad thought. The long snapper has no business counting bodies on the field. His job is to snap the ball to the kicker. Period. Any coach that gives a long snapper the power of decision making like a fake punt on their own 26 yard line should be fired immediately. Hmm, I think your conviction has swayed me on this topic. It was a dumb thought, especially in that situation. He is a team captain, and specifically captain on special teams plays, and he did make the call, so you can be pretty damn positive that hte coach gave him the power of decision making there. And no, his job is not just to snap the ball.
  14. Cubs drafting 18 right now, 3 games away from the top 15 cut-off.
  15. They play 18 against Houston and 16 against Cincy with 15 against the rest. I'm not sure what they normally do but I'm pretty sure they play less per team than other divisions who face each other 19 times. Actually they had similiar 18/15 game breakdowns against division opponents this year (pit and cincy were both just 15 games) The Cubs only play the Rockies 5 times but play LA and AZ 7 times each. They host Philly 4 games and go there for 2, but have 8 against SF and another team I believe.
  16. His problem is he hasn't been as good the last couple years as he was earlier in his career. He walks too many and doesn't get enough strikeouts and allows to many runs to score to be considered as a legit Cy Young candidate. He could be the opening day starter on numerous teams, but I don't consider him a lockdown ace. In the past two years he's been a top 10 NL pitcher in only one pitching category HR/9 this season. I think it's completely disingenuous to just pretend Cubs fans don't appreciate what they've got. He's been a really good pitcher for several years, and on an overall basis during that time he's been one of the best. But in any given recent season he hasn't been elite and as a $18m/year guy he leaves a lot to be desired. The team is probably tight for cash and could be better off trading him and his salary for something else and replacing him with somebody cheaper.
  17. NFL Fan rule #1: Never, ever, under any circumstances (but especially in dire circumstances) believe what an NFL head coach says. He's married to that D though. They've varied off the base defense. It didn't start out as very blitz heavy but has been at times one of the most aggressive blitzing teams in the league.
  18. Kansas City might be the only team that could justify such a move, and really, they couldn't justify it.
  19. They'll be zero games out before they are four.
  20. I wouldn't be opposed to Grabow if only to satisfy the "must have a veteran presence in the pen" doctrine and guarantee you have at least one lefty therefore reducing the likelihood of them freaking out in March and demanding to get a lefty.
  21. G. Heileman is only signed through this year and is arbitration eligible, and he's not any good.
  22. Is that a criminal counts or some futbol terminology?
  23. I guess they do this so far in advance to give the "wait til next year fans" something to think about. Odd. They face all three NL California teams on different trips. They face the Mets, Phillies and Nationals on three different trips as well. They play in Wrigley, Philly (for two) and Texas without an off day. They go on a quick trip to Seattle in between playing in Wrigley and the south side. They only go to Pittsburgh twice, both in May, and just like this year none of them are weekend games.
  24. I don't put much work into the pick-em league I'm in, but last week was a new low as I got 4 right picks. 25. He's got nothing left in the tank. I was surprised he stuck around with the Saints as long as he did. Hmmm...his 2008 numbers don't look terrible if used as a backup. 3.9 yds/carry. No fumbles. I don't think he played the whole season, but still. I think it's better than what we currently have. If he does have anything left in the tank it probably helps that he's barely touched the ball the past 4 years. He's been essentially a backup during that time, but he's been paid more like a starter, or co-starter. Would he take actual backup money to run behind Forte right now? I think the bigger question might be how well has he kept himself in shape knowing that a suspension was pending?
