  1. I think you might be overreacting a bit. We know more about Bonds now than we did then, and a lot of statistical analysis was not available to most kids. It's pretty easy to see why a kid would be more interested in emulating Griffey than Bonds.
  2. You'd think one guy at the magazine has the job of making thousands of people aware of a magazine that nobody has ever year of before.
  3. Barker's name is already crossed of the nhlnumbers page for the blackhawks. So this is essentially buying an expiring contract and getting a prospect as well?
  4. Oh my, I didn't notice.
  5. I've changed my opinion after reading this preview. Now I think they stand of chance of riding Lee all the way and sneaking in the back door to a title. http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/sarah-spain/assets_c/2010/02/maplestreet-thumb-300x406-75145.jpg
  6. The question was which brings the least to the table, and therefore gets booted.
  7. I can watch pretty much any college football game, and every NFL game regardless of "my team" playing. But I've tried watching the world league and arena league and just can't. I guess it has something to do with people actually caring about the outcome or the tradition. With baseball I can really only watch the Cubs and then playoff games, or if I go to a game I can enjoy anybody. But I can't really get into other teams playing.
  8. They bring a lot to the table in the football department
  9. it's not all that surprising. the population of the states that comprise the big 10 is 67 million; the big xii states' population is 46.4 million and more than half of that is texas. the big ten has its own tv network, much better academics, much more tradition and more prestigious programs. And they have a huge presence in the NY metropolitan area. I honestly think it rivals the Big East interest overall (dominates in football, takes a backseat in basketball but is still a presence).
  10. I think that's a better reason to not take the league seriously. I've tried to watch, but just can't enjoy it. I also think it's biggest market is families who are more or less shutout of going to NFL games and/or have no interest in bringing kids to that sort of environment. Yeah, kids probably like the whiz-bang action and all that. And that's fine -- it's not for everybody. But watch, there was be some kid in a kindergarten spelling bee in OKC who gets the word "dogs," and the bell will go ding. da way deze kidz deze daze rite dusnt sprize me
  11. It was the only thing he offered up as a reason and all I did was note that other respected leagues have teams with stupid names.
  12. At least they used letters. I'm grasping what he's saying, but I just think it's stupid to not take a sport seriously because a team is given a stupid name. A Sox is stupd, a Knick is stupid, the Mets are stupid. Minor league baseball is filled with stupid names but it's still a decent form of sport.

  14. Assuming for a second that there is a risk of a Big Ten team being booted from the conference in some sort of restructuring, and that they want to keep the best combination of quality school and quality athletic departments, which Big Ten team do you think is most at risk of being let go. I would assume the big revenue sports carry the most weight, and in special circumstances, a headline team from a smaller sport may have strong influence. For instance, Iowa's wrestling program might be the most significant non-basketball/football program in the conference. Northwestern struggles with the athletics, but they've been a respectable football program for a decade and are probably the leading academic institution, helping their cause. Ohio State is a no brainer as they've carried the weight of the conference for years now. Try and keep personal hatred of a "worthy" school out of the debate, but just in case, you get 2 choices.
  15. Packers? Sorry NFL, not taking you seriously. That's ridiculous and you know it. No I don't. It's a stupid name that people accept because it's been around. Not taking a league seriously because of a dumb team name doesn't make sense to me. Don't take it seriously because it's a bastardized version of football played indoors with crazy rules, but because some hicks decided to name their team something stupid?
  16. It's a stupid name, just like the Knickerbockers, Metropolitans, Dodgers, Athletics, Phillies, Jazz etc etc. I still probably won't watch the games though.
  17. Packers? Sorry NFL, not taking you seriously.
  18. The Blackhawks couldn't score back then and people were excited about the prospect of a guy who could actually add offense to a weak blue line. It wasn't about finding the best defenseman, but rather getting more scoring. As I've said before, it just so happened that the year after they sign him all the young scoring talent emerges and then Keith turns into a scorer as well, eliminating the need for a guy like Campbell. This was also pre-economic meltdown and hopes remained for a rising salary cap instead of the inevitable decline. And then the Huet signing just confused everybody and everything.
  19. I was hoping that would be on CNBC, I don't think I get MSNBC in HD, and CNBC is supposedly the hockey and curling channel. Oh, that's a good point. I don't know if I have MSNBC in HD. Nope, not on Directv. CNBC is in HD, but not MSNBC. Go figure. Hopefully they will have one of those dedicated 4-5 channel blocks all in HD like they do when wimbledon, us open or other major event is on. The website says everything is in HD for the olympics
  20. Yeah, I can't imagine it being significantly harder to get from Penn State to Texas than it is to get to Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa.

  22. 'Tis opening night. http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-hockey-schedule-results/ The first men's hockey game isn't until Tuesday though. The first event is ski jumping scheduled for 10am pacific time, today. The first medal event is ski jumping, schedule for tomorrow at 10:45 pacific time.
  23. As a big ten fan I would love to see Texas or ND, with Pitt as a distant third. Nobody else is interesting.
  24. They could quickly turn around and add those respected non-BCS schools and turn it into a 14-16 team mega conference that would maintain it's status with numbers. Take away the best of the WAC and Mountain West, then let the remaining teams from those conferences merge. I guess, but it sounds like they could lose a couple of schools to the Pac Ten as well. Possibly, but then you could just take the Pac 10, Big 12, WAC and Mountain West, and break it down into 3 conferences. There's 39 teams there if Texas leaves. Most of the WAC is terrible at everything. Which just means you take the best of both of those conferences and leave the rest to fight amongst themselves.
  25. Money. Same style of football as who?
