  1. The hysterics over this are nonsensical. It isn't going to kill his chances at future success. Bringing Jay Jackson up is just dumb. And again, all those guys are just names, and Caridad hasn't just struggled, he's on the DL.
  2. He's had essentially the same numbers as Fukudome and Byrd, and Soriano has the same exact average. It's not like Colvin is smoking hot, or that great of a bet to be much better than any of the three. He's still Tyler Colvin.
  3. Guys like Samardzija are failures based on their careers. And the rest of the bullpen is just a hodgepodge of names. I still don't understand why Caridad was just given a job, and this Gray guy has done next to nothing. They could call up Gaub but something tells me they aren't going to want 4 lefties in the bullpen, which is supposedly Gorzolanny's next stop after Lilly returns. They don't really have a huge supply to draw on, and if Cashner is the best option there's really very little reason not to give him the job.
  4. Do they still do this thing in Secaucus?
  5. Because A) the remedy to that is quite simple in that you can just as easily send him back to the minors, and B) we are still a long way off from him being an ace starter. He can get plenty of work in the majors and it does not have to be much more than a blip on his developmental path. Pitchers are such volatile commodities, that there is plenty of justification in getting value out of them when you can instead of wishing on some far off date when they might be a 35 start 200 inning pitcher.
  6. If he's getting the strike calls because of who he is, and not because he's lucky, then that's part of his ability as a pitcher, fair or not. No it is not.
  7. Colvin-Byrd-Fukudome I think they said on the broadcast yesterday that Byrd was getting the day off today. That would probably mean Colvin in center. And Lou said he was rotating the off days this weekend.
  8. What the hell does that even mean?
  9. Not necessarily perfect, just don't walk anybody. Then again, Lou hasn't exactly been consistent with his first impressions. I'm pretty sure Grabow walked the first guy he saw as a Cub yet he maintained a relatively safe position ever since (at least until now). You can give up hits and he won't kill you, see Howry. And for some reason Samardzija keeps getting chance after chance despite sucking hard (although I don't believe he walked the first guy he saw). The common line between Grabow and Howry is that Lou always seems to have some veteran he inexplicably trusts too much in the bullpen regardless of how bad they stink. Their "veteran-ness" wins out with him. I have little doubt that Hendry has at least implied very strongly that Shark needs to get innings, and Lou's response seems to be as petulant about it as possible to the point of putting him out there at the wrong times and leaving him out there too long. I think Howry's faith was about a lack of walks. While Grabow's was about sticking with the guy they went through the effort of acquiring. Samardzija's situation is complicated, but Hendry could always demote him, and he could do the same with Cashner if he got called up and not used. The concerns about usage are legit, but the solution is really easy if it comes to that. Bottom line is I would not have a problem with Cashner being called up to the bullpen, if he gets work. Samardzija needed work just to figure out how to get people out to begin with, at any level. Cashner is just about getting innings logged.

  11. Not to just be argumentative, but really, the umpire has final control. And that's a variable that hasn't been mentioned in this either. 3-2 count. Pitcher throws a ball at the outside corner, that the batter doesn't swing at. Is it a ball or a strike? Walk or strikeout? Given or taken? Maybe it's not just pitchers that are "giving" walks, but umpires too. A pitcher could throw the same pitches in the same spots with one ump and get 75% strikes, while another with a tighter zone could only call 55-60% strikes. It adds another complication in the "give/take" equation. It would be a variable on a day-to-day basis, but it would even out over the course of a season or a career. That's not necessarily true at all. You think over the course of his career, Greg Maddux had an even amount of undeserving balls called as undeserving strikes?
  12. Yeah, well that's always a possibility. In which case I would hope Hendry would step in to bring him back to the minors. If he's any good, history shows Lou is going to lean heavily on him.
  13. I don't see that as a particularly good comparison. Samardiza's struggles are about the fact that he sucks, not that he's raw. Cashner was considered a close to major league ready reliever by many when he was drafted. He's been dominant in short stints and all the issues have been of the 5th/6th inning variety. If he's used properly in the big leagues he could easily be a 2-3 inning per outing guy who gets plenty of work this season. It doesn't have to be a "lost season" if he goes to the bullpen. Now, if he only throws once a week and gets banished for a couple walks here and there that would be a problem. But if he's used there's nothing wrong with him being on the roster.
  14. It's true. http://deadspin.com/5518706/last-nights-winner-not-this-guy Scum of the earth down there.

  16. Nantz is just jealous that he didn't get as much young tail as Tiger got. He only got one before his divorce. A lot of these golfers are probably just pissed at Tiger for making their lifestyle something their wives are more likely to pay attention to.
  17. Lee used at least two profanities toward the umpire. Anybody would have tossed him. Not saying he didn't have reason to be pissed, but still. He said "horse [expletive]" and then the ump tossed him. AFTER that is when he started dropping F bombs. No, rewind it if you have DVR. He dropped an f-bomb first, then horse [expletive], then a whole bunch more f-bombs. Of course I'm watching the Brewers feed. I have no idea what CSN showed. Jim Nantz is [expletive] disgusted.
  18. This. I don't have a problem with a player swinging at a pitch he things he can hit well early in the count. That said, I did not see the pitch so I can't really comment on whether he should have swung at it or not. This is just an inaccurate statement. You don't just swing at any hittable pitch. Lots of pitches are hittable, but when the pitcher cannot walk you, you only swing at a drivable pitch on the first one, not just something you can put in play. That is the epitome of helping a pitcher out.
  19. That assumes the guy is grooving one on the first pitch, and that was not close to the truth.
  20. Why? Braun almost scored would'nt matter.
