  1. When they are theoretically in the race and just a couple games under .500 it's tough. Once they really hit the skids, it's not that hard.
  2. Second question first, absolutely livid. Apparently there's a potential for the team to be penalized against the cap in addition to losing the player. The article says the other deals are being investigated. But Hossa's deal is the least likely to be torn up since they are 1+ years into it and the others were just signed. It also says it is unlikely that any of the others will be vacated. The league went after this one immediately because it was the most blatant abuse of a system that nearly every team has exploited. The precedent has been set, and now they can work on rules going forward to prevent the problem.
  3. And that's what I figured. I guess what I'm more curious about is whether or not there's really a huge difference this year between having something like the 4th pick or, say, the 8th or 9th? Wilken may take the same guy regardless of position. At least the higher selection gives you the option, but more importantly, may be the thing that pushes Ricketts over the edge to deciding to make a move. An 88 loss season may allow Hendry to convince him a couple minor changes could turn everything around, but flirting with 100 losses could make that more difficult.
  4. I thought that last year.
  5. Maybe. But the initial hype of the story is long gone. And Tiger makes them all money.

  7. In a 16 game season, every win counts.
  8. Football season always gets me excited. The combination of the last few beach days of the year, with no more 100 degree humid days, smaller crowds, and then driving home early Sunday morning to watch the games is just the best. I didn't really mean that wasn't going to get excited for football, though I certainly see how you got that from my post. I just meant that I told myself I wasn't going to let the Bears hype get me overly excited/optimistic about the Bears chances...but I can't help it. Yeah, but all the excitement about football in general inevitably awakens my suppressed optimism for the Bears. If they win their first game I'll have them penciled into the 2nd round of the playoffs.
  9. It's the kind of thing I would expect Pat Hughes to say about Lou Piniella and Derrek Lee next year.
  10. If it was Jeff Joniak, then it would be typical offseason fluff. The fact that it comes from the enemy makes it more interesting than that. Nobody said comments like those mean the Bears are going to win. They're interesting comments in the absence of real games. But he's talking specifically about guys whose greatest achievements occured in Vikings uniforms. He's blowing smoke up their butts.
  11. No, he's not valuable. He's not hurting the team, but he's not valuable.
  12. No. Not unless he has a great week at Whistling Straits. His play right now combined with the distraction would leave him off the team if I were captain. I agree that's probably the smart thing to do if winning is the only goal. But if exposure and TV ratings are another goal, and we all know there are, there will be a lot of pressure on Pavin to at least offer Woods one of the captain's picks. He's also the best player. You can add another nobody to the bottom of the roster in his place, but you're probably better off seeing if Tiger can regain his form in a couple months. Maybe he needs a team atmosphere to do it instead of the world against Tiger situation he's been in since Thanksgiving.
  13. Football season always gets me excited. The combination of the last few beach days of the year, with no more 100 degree humid days, smaller crowds, and then driving home early Sunday morning to watch the games is just the best.
  14. It's better than moving back a few spots.
  15. It's a double edged sword. These guys don't bring much to the table, but they are paid handsomely and treated like geniuses when successful. So if they lose, they are blamed and cut loose.
  16. I don't understand the focus on Soriano. Yes, he has a terrible contract, but why are you singling him out like he's having a bad year or hurting the team? With runners on base he's hitting .285 .333 .570 .903. Sure his overall RISP scoring numbers aren't idea, but .256 .330 .449 .778 is pretty far from the end of the world, and with just one runner on either 2nd or 3rd he's OPSing over 1.100. Yes, he's obviously overpaid, but he's still very valuable to this team. No he's not.
  17. In retrospect, purposefully building a team with the worst offense possible was probably a bad idea.
  18. Literally quitting during your final season would probably not sit well with Lou's ego. I can't see it happening.
  19. What do you like about it for the Brewers? He's talking about Dickerson. I didn't even see another name.

  22. Is this your homework, Larry? See what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?* *as edited for TV Guide Channel.
  23. Unless it's Trent Green.
