    And points. and it's silly looking at points and saying that they are what counts when, in actuality, what really counts are wins. You make no sense. People talked about the yardage, but other things indicate the game was closer. Your point was pointless.

    I think the point is that hurting the QB is somewhat of a fluke. It's not really something you can rely on being part of your defense every week. But you can get in the backfield and get enough pressure to also make a team dumb down the offense, especially when the team has a lead. Plus, it's not like the Lions went from the run-and-shoot to the wishbone. They only had 5.3 yards per pass attempt with Stafford. I'm not trying to say Detroit would have racked up 400 yards with him, but his loss made a difference. Chicago probably would not have gotten as many chances as they ended up getting with Stafford in there. They kept getting the ball back in good spots, and kept doing nothing.

    They scored those points because of turnovers...not because of any offensive efficiency. They went 36 yards after an interception, and 45 yards after a fumble. Hill had two drives longer than either of those. It was pretty obvious the Lions toned down the offense when Hill was in there. You really have to take the second half defensive performance with a grain of salt unless Peppers plans on killing a QB every week. I'd be happy with 2 or 3.

    Yes, and the yards discrepency is very misleading for this game. Detroit moved the ball when they weren't licking their wounds. So maybe they'd have had 250yds instead of 150yds. That doesn't do anything to mitigate the 450+yds the Bears had. I guess if you wanna say the Bears would've only doubled their yardage instead of tripled it, I'd concede the point. That's the point.

    So we can't take turnovers into account when we compare yardage differential, but we can take injuries into account. Anyway, I'm done talking about that game. Ultimately it doesn't matter. That game is over and Stafford isn't gonna be back anytime soon to show us what an awesome QB he is. If we have as many turnovers this week as we did last week, we'll lose. You can take them into account, but it really doesn't matter how the team got the ball, they got it, drove and scored. Chicago started at the Detroit 1 and the Detroit 41 and got zero points out of it. And yes injuries matter, especially when it's the QB and the result of the QB getting hurt is that the opponent essentially closed up shop for a quarter.

    I was with you until this point. You think that's a bad thing? It's the acquisition of beer that's the problem. Why are you at the game if you're getting up to get beer during the action? It's just a distraction. I realize that there's never a good time to get in a beer line at an NFL game because of how short the breaks are, including halftime, but it seems to hurt crowd participation. Why are you asking why somebody is getting a beer? It's actually not that hard to avoid missing most of the action while acquiring beer. Buy 2 before sitting down, try and time another run after one of those touchdown, commercial, kickoff, commercial breaks, buy a couple at halftime and then 2 more on your way back to your seat. Or if you are going with your wife let her volunteer to go get some when she inevitably has to get up to pee 10 times a game. And I've been to quite a few Northwestern games, the atmosphere is about as lame as any big time college. I've seen some disinterested Penn State crowds, as well as some student sections that were far more interested in sneaking booze around, starting fights and hooking up than watching the game. I think the best regular season NCAA crowd is better than the best regular season NFL, but I've been to plenty of NFL games that actually were very enjoyable.

The Bears can get the ball on the opponents 1 and not score. Detroit did actually have to move the ball to makes those scores, and they did it. Chicago had a huge field position advantage and hardly took advantage of it.

    Um...ok...that's some interesting justification. How did Stafford's injury contribute to the Bears putting 463 total yards on the Lions? You realize that Hill threw for more yards, and made more passes than Stafford did right? The Lions passed one fewer time in the game than the Bears did. Anyway, this is the Bears thread. Not the Lions thread. If you want to discuss that game, go post in the week 1 thread...not here. There is definitely something to what he was saying. The defense was not as good as that yards allowed stat indicates. They shut them down only after Stafford went down and the Lions tried to play keep away. Stafford had 6 possessions in less than 2 full quarters and they scored 14 points. Hill had 8 possessions in 2 full quarters. It's not "so disingenuous" though, more like misleading.

    That is the 2nd reference I have seen for a 9 point spread. Was that the preseason spread on this game? I've seen 8.5, 8 and 7.5, which is where the cbs pick-em league is set. Prisco always seems to pick against Bears.

    Moms have been pulling kids out for years. When I was a kid there were several good athletes that weren't allowed to play due to injury concerns from mommy. I never got to play pee-wee football for that reason. Played baseball, soccer, basketball...but football was out. We never had it, but our school started earlier than most, in 4th grade. I had cousins who played pee wee before me and I was very jealous.

    that is specifically little league though, and I'm sure with with things like that cal ripken league there is more, but still less than football. Baseball is also a sport where kids participate in multiple leagues/teams, so there can be double counting. I do not believe there is a whole lot of multi team participation in football.

    I would say it's indirectly related at least. Allows for more spontaneous trips to the ballpark or planning certain times of the year around games you'd like to see. It's like something you can mark off on your social calendar repeatedly throughout the year. Baseball attendance is pretty good considering how many games there are. And if you want to talk about how popular the sport is rather than how popular the league is, then I can entertain the idea that baseball is somewhat competitive with football given how many people play it. The NFL is the most popular LEAGUE though, no doubt. The NBA probably has the biggest individual stars. I think college football trumps minor league baseball if we're talking about the sport in general, and high school football alone is more popular than college and high school baseball. And I think baseball participation has been shrinking in this country for a long time, no?
