    Three of those players are gone after this year regardless, so "getting out of their contracts" isn't really a pertinent issue. And why would the Cubs need to "get out" of Byrd's contract? If getting out from millions of dollars in their contracts allowed the Cubs to sign all their overslot guys in the draft and still have enough to binge a bit on overseas FA, would that be making a difference? Sure, but I don't think they're in that position. Well, I'm sure revenue is going to be lower than expected this year. A few million shifted away from a dying major league roster to the minor league system could easily be meaningful.

    I think what it all adds up to is that my Friday night is probably going to suck, but I have an outside shot at witnessing history. And it's always fun to be in attendance when Zambrano plays.

    Yeah, on the surface I was thinking Ramirez, Pena and Soto have been the most disappointing this season, and the biggest drag on the offense. At least in terms of in comparison to his fellow NL 3B, Ramirez is holding his own. In comparison to other middle of the order hitters though, he's below average.

    I used impotence as it pertains to the complete lack of power by some of the guys who are actually doing reasonably well.

    I have no idea how that last sentence follows the previous ones. What's the confusion? They don't have a standout hitter anywhere. Where they are doing best in relation to the league, they are still getting weak production. Their best active hitter this year is probably Fukudome, and he's got a sub .400 SLG and they rank pretty low in relation to NL RF.

    Holy crap, did anybody else realize that the Cubs lead the league in OPS out of 3B right now? What the what? Ramirez has been terrible, yet the Cubs 3B lead the league. Castro and Barney have both been in a funk but the Cubs are still upper half production in both 2B and SS right now. Pena is weighing down the infield, as is the catcher combination. They've actually gotten a boost out of LF with Dewitt replacing Soriano. CF has taken a hit with Johnson out, as he was doing more than Byrd. This lineup is just littered top to bottom with mediocrity and impotence. Even their most effective hitter this season, Fukudome, is putting up substandard production for a RF.

    I think the bad field is a huge part as to why it's a tough place to play. The Bears record late in the season at home has always been one of their stronger suits, right? Wasn't the Arizona game an unseasonably warm day as well? In theory the Bears do well at home late in the year, but I'm not sure it's been true. The Arizona game was warm, but they play a few nice weather games every year. Do those not count?

    No. Don Baylor came after Riggleman, beginning a string of overhyped overpaid name managers (although I was a fan of his when they went looking). Essian was in the early 90's.

    I don't get Soldier Field as being tough. It's a bad field, but tough place to play? Only for finesse dome teams like New Orleans at the right time of year. New England and Green Bay were able to go in late last year and handle it fine. Look what Arizona did there a couple years ago.

    Would the MLBPA allow him to waive that guaranteed money? I'm not certain on that, but didn't Sosa do that when he went to Baltimore? I believe you can't reduce the value of your current contract in total dollars, i.e. simply take a paycut, but if you agree to not have an option vest it's viewed differently. (It won't happen, but one could argue he feels he can make more money as a free agent than he would from the option) I don't know, was Sosa's a player option? The Cubs still paid his salary for the first year. With Aramis it is a team option that kicks in automatically if traded. And if he voids it he doesn't get the buyout.

    His contract is not favorable for anybody wanting to trade for him. I doubt you could get much unless he had a huge turnaround. I really don't see much point in trying to trade him and I can't fault the best Cubs player of the past 9 years for not wanting to be traded. If he was the same guy but the Cubs acquired him in 2007, maybe I'd feel differently.

    Gretzky had strong ties to one owner who was arrested for financial shenanigans, had some sort of financial issues with the Coyotes and is dealing with a wife who has been tied to illegal gambling. So they are probably looking for all they can get.

    That always surprises me. It was the first non fastball pitch I learned and was quite effective. I guess if you've got enough velocity to pop onto scouting radars there's no use for it in high school. That wasn't an issue with me.

    interesting idea. 30 doesn't seem far enough back for most cfb punters, but maybe it is. seems like you'd get a heck of a lot of series starting at the 40 or mid-field, which shortens the field a bit much for my taste. Maybe I'm misinterpreting but it sounds like your two comments are diametrically opposed. If it's not far enough back why are you worried about too many series starting at mid-field.
