  1. You are probably right. It was a lateral move more or less, but because Selig made it people get up in arms. The idea of AL and NL taking turns in the draft was also very stupid.
  2. We aren't paid executives in charge of the decision making. I'm just curious what has changed that took people from thinking it was a great trade at the time to thinking now that it was a terrible trade at the time. If Gorz wasn't the greatly superior option at the time, what has changed to make him clearly that at the time of the trade? They got rid of all the other options as well and had no others. Most people assumed they wouldn't go into the season without a 6th starter.
  3. It just alternated, right? It alternated prior to 2003. that's what i thought. so how is that better than letting the ASG determine it? i don't really understand that gripe. It's a gripe because people really hate Selig. There really is no perfect way to do it. The all star game is a pretty dumb one though.

  5. I think bunting is becoming much more acceptable - which is why I pointed out that there are beneficial times to use it. I'm also much more open to players like Pierre, Campana, etc., laying down drag bunts and the like since they have very realistic chances to reach base that way. It shouldn't be done all the time, but as a strategic weapon it can be useful. Sure, if you suck like Campana you have to bunt. But we're talking about actual major league caliber hitters.
  6. Yeah, they are going to be able to make a substantial in season move this year.
  7. It just alternated, right?
  8. Because they won, silly.
  9. When your other options are storing a veteran with a guaranteed contract and a bad attitude in AAA (something anybody with half a brain would have know would not work) or luring old guys out of retirement, you sure as hell do. Cashner never stood a chance of being a 6 inning 100 pitch guy this season, with or without injury. Gorz could have gotten plenty of work in a virtual piggy back situation with him. In previous seasons Hendry talked about the need for 6 or 7 starters, in this season, he decided not to go with any backup options.
  10. I figured it was because they got a first round draft pick for Troy Brouwer.
  11. why are they wearing the ugliest shoes on the planet?
  12. For years and years, the Cubs have been an all or nothing team. If they can't hit the long ball, they lose. Plain and simple. How about execution? How about hustle? How about getting them on, getting them over and getting them in? I have seen this team blow more scoring chances that ultimately costs them games because they absolutely REFUSE to do the little things. You don't want Brenly? Fine. I have no problem with him. You haven't even said why you do not like him. How about not buying into the BS that Dave Kaplan is selling?
  13. CUBS ARE NOW IN FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Answer the question. Are you saying hustling does not help win games? I mean, you did say that, right? I said what this team is lacking is not more hustle. A lack of hustle is not why this team sucks and why this team has performed so underwhelmingly throughout the Jim Hendry era. The reason this team isn't good is because Jim Hendry is a bad GM. It is not because they lack a manager who will bench Soriano.
  14. You really think Brenly or any other manager is going to bench Soriano for (allegedly) not hustling? Did you quit paying attention to baseball in little league? Who else would they put out there? Campana. That kid has spunk.
  15. CUBS ARE NOW IN FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. Soriano is Soriano because that is what Soriano is. Any flaws he has are not due to a manager who allows him to have flaws.
  17. No, it couldn't. This team isn't good. The problem is not trying. Brenly likes to talk about Soriano from the booth when he knows 99% of the fans will eat up anything he says. I highly doubt he would be able to affectively change Soriano from the dugout.
  18. You have no idea either. And things like being sound and bunting are just talking points. They don't address the issues of what plagues the Cubs.
  19. He won't teach any of these guys "baseball". Brenly succeeded for a brief period as a first year manager with veteran HOF caliber pitchers but his team quickly fell apart and he has not managed since. I would not count on him doing a damn thing to make things better. Pretending to call out Soriano for dogging it isn't going to win more games.
  20. I'm not so sure he knows what this team is missing. This team doesn't need FIRE AND INTENSITY. It needs better baseball players, which is the responsibility of the GM. Also, if Brenly is manager it could indicate they are staying internal for changes and that's not a good thing.
  21. I'm hoping the opposite. When is the deadline, August 1?
  22. Castro is going to be the greatest player to have ever played the game so no thanks.
  23. I don't see how you can have a decade as bad as the Cubs have had in terms of patience at the plate and not have an organizational bias against it. There's a difference between not caring about it and trying to avoid it. The Cubs would not have drafted Jackson if they were trying to avoid players with walks. Nor would they have signed Pena. Yes, there is a difference, but there is a difference between what Wilken does and what Hendry does as well. Wilken may flirt with patience more often. Hendry may occasionally acknowledge it, but if you are consistently filling your organization with the most impatient players in the league, for a decade, there's a built in bias against it.
