  1. Tribune is reporting the Merriweather contrat is fairly substantial, with $1m guaranteed and 2.5m salary, which makes him the highest paid safety on the team and would seem to indicate he's a good bet to be starting early.
  2. Not really that interesting at all. It's rare to go back to back and there's a few other teams that are worthy selections alongside them. Then explain to me why I've heard the word "dynasty" all week. I don't know, I haven't heard anything of the sort. There are 3-5 NFC teams that most everybody is predicting to be the leaders, and nobody is the standout. Vegas has their win total at 11, and they won 10 last year.
  3. Not sure why you would say that. Guys resign from positions every year, and rarely do they spell out exactly why, especially the day after doing it.

  5. It could very easily be an impediment to the hiring process. Well yes, if you take those actions as an indicator of an approach on Ricketts' part that runs counter to everything he's said and done so far, then yes, I suppose it could be an impediment. I'm not the one being interviewed. Subtle outside forces have caused guys to not accept jobs at this level before and will do so in the future. There was nothing to gain by keeping Fleita, and something to lose.
  6. why are they showing the bears/falcons game in tampa? try zooming in. They don't appear to be showing anything, which would mean they haven't sold out yet.
  7. Except when he was a GM he was a laughing stock. Ricketts said he wanted to emulate Boston, hiring Lamar would be emulating the Rays of the Bob Lurie days. The first thing Sternburg did when he bought the team was fire his sorry ass. He has talked about Boston in the past, but I'm not sure their name has been raised of late. I would have to think he would be more than happy to emulate Philly as well.
  8. It could very easily be an impediment to the hiring process.
  9. You find the fact that he's bummed he didn't get called up more disturbing than the fact that he was an ineffective pitcher?
  10. Tribune headline said they signed him to their own practice squad, but the story indicated he as on the regular roster. Now the headline has been changed to clarify.
  11. Again, what could he possibly be doing where going on an interview would distract from what the team has to do the rest of the year? Professional sports is a business where guys are allowed opportunities to move up in other organizations without much fuss unless there is some sort of big investment in that guy.
  12. I think the defense will struggle to be top 5. Probably going to be closer to 10. The offense probably needs to be above average to make this team a contender this year.
  13. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/richard_deitsch/09/06/NFLbroadcasting.guide/1.html SI did their NFL media preview talking about all the broadcasting teams, additions, subtractions and all the rest. Although it's one of those stupid things fans get weird about, I thought it was kind of interesting that ESPN is using a Chicago based reporter this year, so the Bears finally have their own Ed Werder/Sal Paolantonio. No idea who Josina Anderson is though.

  15. I like most of the team, but the flaws are too glaring for me to expect another division crown.
  16. Why the hell would the Phillies be so upset about an assistant whose main job is player development asking to interview for a GM position when the minor league season is over just because the team is in a pennant race. Would they really think his interview would somehow distract the Phillies from winning a game? Is Halladay going to lose focus wondering whether the freaking assistant GM is going to interview with another team? For the record, I think this hire would suck balls. I didn't know that assistant GMs sat around doing nothing in September. Must be a nice gig. What could he possibly be responsible for on a day to day basis where interviewing for another job would somehow get in the way?
  17. http://deadspin.com/5837908/plane-carrying-khls-lokomotiv-yaroslavl-crashes-in-russia-leaving-just-one-survivor Looks like a Russian hockey team just perished.
  18. I feel like one of those teams is going to disappoint. No idea which, but one of them is going to leave people wondering what happened. Yep. I'm with you on this one. I'm thinking that Atlanta's defense could let them down. Depending on the timing of Vick's injury, Philly could turn into an 8 or 9 win team on the outside looking in.

  20. That's kind of scary. He resigned suddenly, and won't reveal publicly why. Why would you do that if you didn't have something else lined up. Hopefully he got caught banging Sandberg's wife or something.

  22. Maybe he'll save the Cubs some time and cut himself. It's an immature and petulant thing to do. It probably doesn't mean he should kill himself. Cutters generally don't kill themselves, do they?
  23. No, I was the guy not losing sleep over keeping him or firing him. I'm in the camp where contracts leaving and money being reinvested properly will go a long way towards getting this franchise back on track, which for a minute there in the 2000's they were. I know I'm talking crazy when I say this...but the results aren't always guaranteed to be there, even when things are done in the one and only way to do them right. You will have a better time getting results when you don't have incompetent idiots deciding how your money will be reinvested.
