  1. The really amazing thing about that 1995 AL season was on August 20th, the Angels were 63-38, the Rangers were 54-47 and the Yankees were 51-50. And the Mariners won the AL West. The Yankees?
  2. I thought he was relatively decent once or twice before, with Baltimore?
  3. Are you suggesting Carlos Pena has been a clearly better player? I could see complaining about a random middle reliever, but Chen has been a decent starting pitcher, which tends to be valued more than completely replacable 1B. You need 6 or more of the former and only 1 of the latter.
  4. I would be really surprised if he is fired before the new GM takes over, and more surprised if the new GM keeps him on board. I would assume Ricketts would give the new guy a clean slate to hire and fire at will, and keeping Quade on as a lame duck manager is a strong signal that the new guy is tanking 2012.
  5. You're not allowed to take pictures in those types of establishments. Or so I have been told. That has not stopped many a person from taking said pictures.
  6. He's at 59 AB now, and he's hitting .288/.377/.885 Since the corner outfield market in free agency is dismal this year, I'd be okay heading into next year with a Soriano/LaHair platoon at LF, once you merge their lefty righty splits and salary into a mean average. Spend the money on superstar 1B and CJ Wilson. The problem with that idea is Lahair would play a lot.
  7. Exactly, if you're not an ND fan, you aren't watching this game. So why play it every year. And you meant 'is' you big meanie. Actually I usually watch at least some of that game. It feels like something traditional and meaningful even if it's not.
  8. Absolutely. But I can't see Epstein making a panic move like that purely for PR purposes. Doesn't have to be Epstein making the panic move.
  9. Most people, yes. But it only takes one person who doesn't care, and there plenty of people like that. My guess is he has a boss who is very sympathetic and protective of him. It doesn't have to be a heinous crime to draw interest. A picture of him in a strip club would probably make most bloggers' day.
  10. http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2011/09/espn-30-for-30-presents-catching-up-the-bills-oilers-comeback.html#more-39895 ESPN won't stop with these 30-for-30 programs that throw salt on old wounds. naughty language in that link.
  11. It should probably be for discussion at a later date but I really wonder how the next turnover will go down. It has to be pretty rare for a new GM with any real power to be brought in with a coach that has 8+ years of service time. Most of the time I think those coaches become de facto GMs until they are ousted themselves. But I'd hate to see Lovie as GM. He's not a personel guy, he's a have them all ready to play on Sunday guy. Ideally you'd bring in a fresh face, but realistically you are probably going to look at a short-term guy who is familiar with the system.
  12. You aren't unrecognizable if you wear your uniform into the bar. And all you need is an imported beer, that should allow you to keep most of your per diem.
  13. I am of the belief that this management and coaching staff has built up enough goodwill that simply going on a bad run isn't going to hurt them too bad. They haven't posted back to back sub .500 seasons since they've been together. They are also coming off of an NFC championship appearance. I think the best chance for change is if Angelo finally retires, which may be sooner than people think and they bring in new blood. If they lose the next 6 then maybe I will hope they go on and lose more to create some turnover. But I don't see anything good coming from losing to Carolina or Detroit, so I'd really rather see them win. I also don't want to see them blow the potential Cutler era, or the end of the Peppers/Urlacher/Briggs/Tillman/Harris era. I can go along with that. I believe in Cutler IF he's got the right pieces around him. I also would love to see the heart of the defense ride off into the sunset with a title, but Angelo and Lovie just cant understand that their offense needs huge upgrades before they can be taken seriously. I think they understand, I just don't think they know how to go about it. They've brought in numerour free agent receivers, RBs and linemen. They've spent important picks on QBs, RBs and recently some linemen. They've gone after a big name OC. They realize you need to be able to pass to win nowadays, they just aren't good at executing on that knowledge.

  15. If you play your cards right you should be able to have a really good time without having to spend much of it.
  16. You can't exactly blame him that Illinois still qualifies to play in the Big Ten.
  17. yeah i think i've been amazed like 3 separate times when i've heard how few RBIs byrd has. i know he was hurt for a while, but he's had almost 500 plate appearances and has batted in the middle of the lineup for most of the year! i guess it's a combo of bad hitters in front of him and (moreso) complete incompetence with runners on base. He smacked a couple that were outs last night. He was perfectly fine in those situations last year and for his career, so it's probably just chance, rather than incompetence.
  18. I think that if the situation arises, like a tie game in the 6th or 7th, Quade should put Garza in to give him a chance for 11 wins.
  19. I'm not one to go crazy about what channel the Cubs are playing on, but the final game of the season is on WCIU?
  20. And there could have been a lot of attention paid to games played by the Cards, Braves, Red Sox, Rays, Angels and Giants all the way up to this week, plus huge interest in the 1-game playoff those first four teams would eventually play for the right to play against division winners in the playoffs. The regular season is 162 games long, people are going to pay attention to it. And more people are going to have a reason to pay attention in September because of the change.
  21. Somebody could make a fantastic movie about you someday. And you won't even have to go into hiding because you will be dead, in the interest of art.
  22. Sandberg isn't going to be satisfied with a job like that. He feels like he deserves to be a manager somewhere. He might agree to be a bench coach in the right situation if he felt like it would lead to him getting a managerial job, but I doubt he would take any lesser job than that. Yeah, he made it quite clear he had no interest in a non-managerial coaching position, and even still, having the people's choice in the dugout all year isn't going to be comfortable for most managers.
  23. Could this season get any worse?
  24. Torre and Girardi have both managed with the Yankees, and since Dusty Baker told us the Yankees do not draw many walks I don't want either guy managing the Cubs.
