    I don't know about that. I'm not sure how the salary cap hit comes into play with his bonuses from the uncapped year, but I can only guess there would be some hit from cutting him. Obviously with the space this year you can both fit him in there and afford the hit from cutting him, but I'd rather not have him count at all against next season. Also, while Unga may not be ready on week 1 to be the 4th RB, I would think he could be ready down the line when it actually matters. It wouldn't be the worst thing to keep him around for depth purposes, but how useful is that depth when the guy was as god awful as he was last year. Some undrafted rookie should be able to do the same thing.

    Sounds about right to me. Yep. There's really not much to debate about him. He's got 2500+ professional PA with very uninspiring production. he may be able to improve upon his lackluster major league numbers going forward, but that just means 4th or 5th OF.

    There's a difference between making a couple key changes and overhauling a staff. They should be able to have a good idea of who they will eventually hire by the end of September, they should make that hire in October and he should be able to bring it, at the very least, a Fleita replacement in October as well. I'm not sure why a new guy would need a month to work on his top lieutenents. How are they going to interview/hire a GM that currently holds that title while the season is still going on? Well, we don't know they will make such a hire, but owners have a way of having conversations and narrowing it down so that the decision can be made before the season is officially complete. But last I checked, October was the end of the season, so I'm not sure what the point of your question is.

    And also, you cannot pick your own assistant, you must use Jim's old one. I know it sounds silly, but this isn't an uncommon practice in the business world, especially when dealing with an executive admin/assistant who has been with the company for a long time or who has a lot of responsibilities (it sounds like this person has one of those). There are significant monetary and productivity costs associated with firing good and/or knowledgeable employees. You don't have to fire the existing one to allow a new executive to hire his own assistant. If that person was any good, they can be efficiently moved into a number of other areas of the business. That would be better for their career anyway.

    I don't think the Bears did anything wrong, they're keeping til Saturday b/c of Barber's injury and Taylor misunderstood their intentions. This is basically a tryout for Taylor. I feel sick for defending a contract procedure by Angelo and the Bears. Yeah, it's another in a long line of weird things, but the Bears didn't really do anything wrong here. When you have so many unprofessional screw-ups on your record, however, you can expect people to overreact to this situation.

    I'm not expecting them to leave, I'm just commenting that it seems odd to me that a new head of baseball operations wouldn't have his choice of executive assistant. Well on that article about the current assistant, it says right in it that the previous executive assistant spanned multiple GMs and a quarter of a decade. I know from my own experience at my company when the new CEO came in, our executive admin assistant stayed in the same role. We've read stuff saying that actual baseball people like Fleita may be forced on the new GM, so an executive assistant doesn't seem to odd. Sure if they decide after a year, they want a change it would be granted, but right away? That would seem odd, IMO. Where have you read Fleita may be forced on the new guy?

    What you seem to be describing is the difference between a receptionist and an executive assistant. It has nothing to do with canning somebody.

    He would theoretically want to show other teams that he can play and he's protected against injury by his current contract.

    Seems pretty clear to me. They haven't released him, but plan on doing so before Saturday. I don't think that's a huge mystery. I think the story here is they told him he will be released so others teams can prepare to sign him, but they are holding onto him until Saturday to make sure they get through the week without injuries to RBs. They are doing him a favor while covering their own backside.

    It was a spending spree. They spent a hell of a lot of money. They just did it terribly inefficiently and wasted millions of dollars.

    Yeah, executive assistants don't tend to get canned when their boss is gone, they get thrown back into the pool of assistants and/or move along with that person to their next gig.

    The new GM doesn't get to hire his own assistant? What kind of nonsense is that? I dunno, thats what she told me. She worked her way up from an intern at the company serveral years ago so I don't think they'd just let her go because Hendry was canned. Her offical title (on the website) is Executive Assistant to Vice President/General Manager. I have no idea what the role of Executive Assisant is, but I assume their job isn't baseball related. Its all about being organized and being able to effectively communicate and such. So I don't think its absurd to say the GM wouldn't get to choose, at least to the extent that they would retain the previous person at first. Um, it's a secretary is it not? It's not the assistant GM, it's the assistant to the GM. The person who takes his calls, buys his wife's birthday present and helps him keep his office romances discreet. Most executives choose their own, and/or bring theirs with them from job to job. Heck, middle managers get to hire their own.

    It's about time. What a gloriously ridiculous waste of money. I still chuckle when thinking about how people lumped those three guys together last year just because they spent so much. An All Pro pass rusher. A washed up blocking tight end and a washed up backup running back. What a haul. Maybe Jerry had buyer's remorse this offseason.

    I wouldn't make the decision based on who else is in the system. His greatest value to the team may end up being via trade, and if he can handle 2B that may be the right decision to make. A good hitting 2B has more cache than a similar hitting 3B. I wouldn't make the decision based on who else is in the system as well. My point was, and it might've not come out as I intended, if they feel he's better at 3rd, then move him that way and don't bother with working him at 2nd simply because. Get him settled into one spot, rather than shifting him around. And my point is there can be value in letting the guy show he can handle 2nd and 3rd. He's got a long way to go before he'll be ready, so there's no rush to lock him into a position. Even if they feel 3B will be his best postiion in the long run, it's not like they have a great track record of predicting what guys will be. I'd rather give him time at more premium positions and use 3B as a fallback down the road.
