    It still chaps my hide that they went after Latroy Hawkins as a Type A free agent for middle relief without caring about the repurcussions. It just speaks volumes toward Hendry's absurd values.

    Not at all worried about it. If he is brought in it has nothing to do with rejuvenating the fan base, and he will be gone if he doesn't produce the results expected. Guaranteed there will be lots of dumb fans who would be more quick to blame Epstein than Sandberg. Luckily the fans aren't making high level decisions. Ricketts isn't an idiot.

    Over the course of an 82 game season season I'm glad they limit the OT time. No reason to make these guys play that much harder for 5 more minutes a night.

    I'd do it with any penalty in the last 45 seconds. With a minute there is still plenty of time for a power play to get the job done.

    I think the odds are slightly in favor of him being retained (because that is the actual smart thing to do), but it is very hard to tell. I'm not on record either way.

    A possession receiver with such limited skills has to be much better at catching the ball than he is. It's not just over the middle drops.

    Yep, he's either holding onto an undervalued asset (undervalued because Kaplan types freaked out about him and the Cubs shot themselves in the foot with how they handled it) or trying to prop up the value before making any move. No way of knowing because we actually have a front office that doesn't telegraph every move they are going to make.

    Zambrano was out of the game and talked about retirement after a teammate berated him. He didn't quit. He packed up his stuff and left. He rescinded his remarks when he realized how much money he left on the table. That sounds like quitting to me, but whatever. He was out of the game. He couldn't do a damn thing to affect that game at that point. The fact that he packed his stuff is absolutely meaningless. He had a hissy fit after a teammate went off on him for hitting the opponent.

    But still, assuming Fielder or Pujols don't happen, how much do we want to pay and how many years do we want to give plan C,D, Or E? Sure, LaHair could be another DuBois, but he could also be another Ludwick and have a few decent years in him. i'm willing to take the chance if we can't get what we really want, especially if this is a tread water type of season, in which case I say trade Byrd for a DeRosa type package. That is a horribly stupid chance to take.

    That is the least of my worries with Sandberg. If things go bad I doubt it will be hard to dump him. As for the Sandberg in Chicago reports, Kaplan was talking during the commercial breaks prior to the press conference yesterday, which was still live on the streaming side, and he said his buddy who owns the Denim Lounge saw Sandberg.

    Votto is signed through 2013. And the real important thing is not necessarily when guys will be eligible to become free agents in the far off future, but actually having those guys reach free agency. The fact that Pujols and Fielder are reaching free agency at the same time is miraculous. Most of the time teams will try and lock up their stars. It's a horrible idea to pass on signing a stud because there is a chance you might be able to sign a different stud 2 years from now.

    Most people assumed that when it happened. Buck and McCarver settled on that story almost immediately.

    Yea doesn't really prevent cheap play in the last 15-30 secs. Like I said, the team serving the penalty should get one fewer shootout chance. That would curb the late cheap shots. Ooo, that's a good idea.

    While I like not having a bye in week 3, lumping them all together really cuts into the fun.

    Actually I think he was clearly just giving a positive answer to a dumbass question. Notice how he talked about consistently dominating at every level of the minors? LaHair was a mediocre hitter until his 17th year at AAA when he was 42 years old. LaHair hasn't come close to fitting the description Theo gave of a guy who just keeps on hitting everywhere.
