  1. so if you run practice and coach the kids all week but don't call the plays you're not coaching? When's the last time JoePa legitimately ran a practice? his current leg/hip injury was because he got hit during a practice. maybe he's doing nothing, but maybe he's coaching during the week, game planning, etc. I have no idea. But the fact is, he's NEVER worn a headset or held a play list, but no one questioned whether he was coaching until he became and old man and he's been an old man for a long time. The headset comment doesn't really matter, but everybody knows joepa doesn't coach.
  2. If Ron Zook murdered some people and he was busted shortly thereafter while the school and program cooperated with the investigation I doubt the NCAA would get involed. If his assistant murdered somebody and he knew it and he tried to sweep it under the rug and they found out by other witnesses a decade from now, and he was still there, i think it might be more likely they would get involved. But again, how does it involve the football program or university (outside of Zook working for them)? Everyone involved should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, but why should the students in the football program suffer because the AD and President of Penn State are cretins? It involves people who work or worked on the football team. And the current students always suffer from problems created by past participants when the ncaa investigates something. child rape by a football coach on football premises witnessed by people working for the football team and potentially covered up and at the very least ignored by the head coach absolutely involves the football program and university.

If his assistant murdered somebody and he knew it and he tried to sweep it under the rug and they found out by other witnesses a decade from now, and he was still there, i think it might be more likely they would get involved. I still think if Penn State cleans house the NCAA will stay away.
  4. what was the story with the fake punt? On the field it was very obvious from the start what was happening, with 2 uncovered gunners available to catch it. Did the Bears know it was coming and decide to defend against with an all out blitz? Were they just going for the block and caught off guard? That play seemed strange from field level.
  5. Just remember, the real monsters in this story are the people who don't give back as much to the community as the millionaire faux football coach.
  6. i said what i wanted to say. if this is your response then there's no point in discussing anything with you any more. it's a legit response. You are excusing a rich child rape enabler by saying he donated money.
  7. It was not an error of judgement. He allowed a child rapist to rape children while using the name of penn state football coach, did absolutely nothing to stop the rapist from raping children and/or covered up the rape. If he cheated on his wife with his secretary that would be an error in moral judgement that most people could look past. This is much more serious. Also, while it's nice that the guy has given back, he gets paid millions of dollars to be a football coach without actually having to be a football coach. He has more time and money than 99.9% of the world has and a million more opportunities to give back. You can't criticize people who are critical of him by saying they haven't done as much as him for the community. That is asinine. Also, mob bosses generally give back to the community as well.
  8. That Bears/Lions game is completely meaningless. Looking at the Bears schedule, that's really the only game I would think to put on that list. The Bears schedule after that is: 4 AFC teams, the Seahawks, the Packers and the Vikings. Were there any other week 10 games on that list? Maybe they thought it was too early to make that list. Chicago-Detroit is big and Chicago-Green Bay could be very good. Green Bay could still be fighting for #1 and Chicago should be fighting for a playoff spot. Two teams with winning records facing each other not in week 17, where most things are wrapped up, but week 16, where lots of things are still interesting. He's got Eagles games on there twice. He's got Oakland/San Diego twice (plus another Oakland game). He's got GreenBay/Detroit and 4 Bengals games. There doesn't seem to be any rule that it has to be an absolutely vital game, it's just 25 games featuring every single team over .500 plus several .500 or lesser teams, with the lone exception of the Bears. The guy consistently disregards the Bears year in and year out. It's odd.
  9. It's not an either or. You can be made at him for not following up and for potentially watering down, ie. covering up.
  10. NBC has to be really annoyed at this point. They've already been forced to give the Pats-Colts game to CBS twice out of the previous 4 seasons, and 2 out of the last 3 times NBC has managed to get the game either Brady or Manning has been hurt. It's one matchup though, and they've got plenty of other opportunities to showcase big games.
  11. I don't think so. There is almost an inevitability that you will have a chance to put him in there later. It's not a desperate need right now, and while it might be a somewhat cowardly stance, I'd rather not upset the apple cart. They are playing well and you might as well reward them by keeping it going.
  12. It's not really all THAT shocking though. No Manning, mediocre Pats....meh. it's not at all shocking. I'm assuming he was being sarcastic.
  13. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/don_banks/11/08/top.25.games.left/index.html?eref=sihp&sct=hp_wr_a4 Don Banks never ceases to disappoint in his completely inexplicable disregard for everything Chicago Bears. He lists his 25 remaining games that will have an impact on playoff races, and does not list the Bears at all. He lists four seperate Bengals games, but apparently there are no remaining Bears games that will have any impact on the playoffs.
  14. don't ever stop being you
  15. i got it off the link i listed about the mom's. From a harrisburg newspaper, via deadspin.
  16. that's why we're in this mess
  17. And now it reaches into possible murder. I'd say probable
  18. The only place I've heard any indiation of that theory is from truffle.
  19. http://deadspin.com/5857440/alleged-victims-mother-jerry-sandusky-admitted-it-to-my-face-13-years-ago deadspin has to have about a dozen or more entries on this issue.
  20. Times change, maybe Paterno thought this younger generation was all for diddling kids.
  21. What steps possibly need to be taken? Is it necessary for there to be a line in policy saying child rape is bad and maybe someone should call the police? It's not unique to Penn State, but this is obviously the most egregious example of where the football team and the money and power it commands becomes out of control. Short of drastic changes to the culture of college sports in general, I don't get how you 'prevent' this from happening. The coaches and administrators in charge at these schools clearly become corrupted with the power, money and influence they have. Penn State is fairly unique. Penn State football is State College, and Joe Paterno is Penn State football. The whole big fish in a small pond thing isn't that unique, but typically you have a strong leader at the head of that situation. Joe Paterno isn't a real leader. He's a figurehead. This is a pretty obvious example of the whole "fish rotting from the head down" situation. There is a leadership vacuum in State College and specifically the football team and athletic department. JoePa decides whether or not he stays, but that's about all he does. He's the head coach but he doesn't coach. When you have such a rudderless ship as that organization, where the head coach's boss has virtually no power over that head coach and the head coach has no power but the power to say he's going to stay there you have no accountability. You have no real "buck stops here" guy and situations like this can arise and be left to fester without a real leader doing a damn thing about it. It's not really the culture of college sports that allows this to happen, after all, it happens all too often in other places. It's the culture of Penn State football and State College Pennsylvania that allows this to happen.
  22. that is not a reasonable response. there are thousands of people in the state college area whose livelihood depends on the football program. it would be extraordinarily stupid to harm all of those people because a small handful of administrators and coaches acted improperly. you get rid of the people involved (which will end up including the president of the university, the guy who oversees the entire athletic department, and the head coach of the football program), you take steps to ensure that something like this never happens again, and you move on from there. one way to ensure that this doesn't happen again would be to set up a local governmental body that people could call when they witnessed crimes or were informed of serious crimes that occurred within their organizations. it could have the power to investigate people who were accused of crimes and arrest them and charge them when necessary, eventually leading to punishment for those found to be guilty of crimes. it would need a catchy name, something about how they represented the people, but they were also chill so you could trust them. maybe use a shortened form of populi for people and a word for something really cold. pol-ice. something like that. either way, it is too bad pol-ice didn't exist back then, because then this all could have been avoided (think how easy it would've been for everyone involved to just dial a number and inform the pol-ice of the child rapist they had caught!). luckily, with truffle's strong leadership, the university will "take steps to ensure that something like this never happens again," since the current system simply doesn't allow for the resolution of such a problem. Ain't no law around here lawdog.
  23. Now you're making me consider benching Stafford for Cutler for the first time this year.
  24. Agreed but I would be shocked if the NCAA did anything to the football program specifically. It seems like a stretch to me but I could be wrong. If Penn State cleans house they will probably leave it alone. But if all they do is a CYA charade they might get involved.
