  1. He basically said stuff like, you have to look at how certain guys bat with runners in scoring position. He looked like a guy who had no clue what advanced stats were but was so desperate for a real managing gig (he's only been an interim guy in the past) that he'd say anything to get the job.
  2. Not good news? They don't want him. They worked with him for like 8 years. If they decide that they don't want him based off that, I'm not sure how that's bad news. I'm still not sure what the Francona selling points are... can somebody give me anything (don't bother hitting reply if you're going to talk about rings or something)? The primary one in my mind is that he worked for them before, and if they hired him that would mean they were comfortable with him implenenting their general strategy on the big league club. On his own I'm not sure there's any one clear thing in his favor. But with the case of most managers it's more about not sucking like some guys do.
  3. Tell me what you don't like about MacKanin other than 'he's old' (60) His responses to the media were worrisome.
  4. Or perhaps he's seeing the Cubs go nutso signing management types and figures he can milk them for more money if they really want him.
  5. and your roommate gets an automatic A.
  6. That can't possibly protect his assets can it? I mean, if that's the case wouldn't everyone facing a losing civil suit just 'gift' all their assets to other people? they're not going to get joe pa's house if they get a civil judgment against him. but what about his wife's house?
  7. probably preparing for death more than hiding it from plaintiffs
  8. Well, if you have 3-5 big market teams that spend big out there, and 2-4 small market teams that try and exploit the advantage of cheap international labor, that leaves 21-25 teams who would conceivably benefit and prefer a situation where costs are held down.
  9. That would be incredibly unethical. In what way? Feigning interest in someone for leverage sake is a nice ploy and I don't see anything even remotely wrong with it. Now if you're talking about Sveum's perspective then that sucks a little, but it's not like it's going to cost him a job or anything. Conspiring with another team to drive away interest in a third party? There's nothing wrong with feigning interest. But this suggestion wasn't simply feigning interest.
  10. how could there be a floor for IFA? You are going to force teams to sign foreign players?
  11. I wouldn't go as far as saying Z's spot is secured.
  12. That would be incredibly unethical.
  13. WHY SO INDECISIVE THEO?? http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking/chi-cubs-managerial-search-progressing-slowly-20111115,0,4238929.story van dyck seems to think it will at least be face to face.
  14. The Mets GM saying it should stay the same doesn't really mean it is going to stay the same. Of course he wants it to stay the same, since he's losing guys and can't sign anybody.
  15. well played
  16. And then there's this:
  17. from the deadspin funbag: I've been meaning to say something like this as well. It's one thing to discuss amongst your friends how much your life would be screwed up if this happened, but these writers who keep talking about the miserable lives all of the victims must now have have gone overboard. I think half of them would be disappointed to learn that several of the guys have adjusted to life post-rape.
  18. By the way, Billick's narrative there was such typical BS where the announcer acts as though he knew exactly what happened based on what the ref called, when the video completely contradicts his statement. Starts at the shoulder and works it's way up to the head? WTF
  19. http://deadspin.com/5859724/meet-the-minor-leaguer-and-scam-artist-who-sold-a-pittsburgh-pirate-to-australia this is somewhat miscellaneous
  20. I'm fairly certain it's still the "unless they are playing in the NCG" scenario.
  21. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7237091/cal-ripken-jr-ex-baltimore-orioles-great-visits-japanese-kids-affected-tsunami NOW IT'S AN INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT!!!!
  22. isn't everybody in that divison 4-5?
  23. To be fair, Ramirez rather aggressively countered criticisms just a couple months ago (I believe it was Hollandsworth who he went after). They have every right to respond, but this isn't the first time his side has responded. This isn't the first, but that was, no? Ramirez has been remarkably quiet his entire time in Chicago, not anywhere close to a boat rocker or anything of the sort. Probably a lot like Sandberg in that regard. But of course...
