  1. Who exactly are you arguing against? I'm not arguing, just pointing out the nonsense in your post.
  2. I'm just pointing out that the fact it is true they haven't done anything but small market stuff yet. It's not about doubting whether they are willing to spend. There's plenty of reason to doubt if they ever actually will. It's been a month, but it's the most important month where most of the biggest moves happen. I want the 2012 Cubs to be a hell of a lot better, and so far they aren't. There's nothing wrong with pointing that out.
  3. Completely disagree. First off, more than one reasonable target has been signed. Whether the prices were reasonable is besides the point, they were reasonable targets. Furthermore, the fact is they haven't done anything but make middling small market mentality moves yet. They've gone for a cheaper Fukudome with less patience in right field, and a more patient Colvin at 3B. They've made middling moves that probably don't represent all that much of an upgrade to what the Cubs began last season with, if any. So far they haven't done anything big market. They haven't done anything to significantly improve the 2012 team. This wasn't a dead franchise. It was a fundamentally flawed franchise in position to be in contention for the division next year with an impact signing or two, and the financial wherewithal to make that happen. The process of rebuilding the farm system will take time, but we're talking about parallel fronts and a team than can afford to do both. This isn't Pittsburgh. They can, should, and have to do both. Over the top pessimism is uncalled for at this point, but nonsensical claims about how unreasonable it is to expect these guys to make the 2012 team a hell of a lot better while also improving the farm system are just as blind to the facts.
  4. There's still need for OF help. They don't have a 160 game guy out there.
  5. Wait. Stewart isn't some A ball high risk high reward guy. He's already shown he can at least stick in MLB at least as a utility guy.
  6. I wasn't aware of the days but when they talked about Chicago's medical staff checking him out in advance of the announcement, I figured it was much earlier than the announcement. On the other hand, when Hoyer talked about the lack of movement at the meetings but feeling good about the process they were in on deals this wasn't what I was looking for.
  7. I sure as hell hope he's got a better shot than Colvin.
  8. Sounds extremely unlikely. Where'd he go, Baltimore? They'll keep anybody around for a full season. MacPhail is gone now, isn't he? Yeah, they have Theo's previous predecessor now, and a dozen garbage players.
  9. Okay, that's fine. I was just pointing out that until, and/or unless they beat GB, I'm going to doubt their chances against every remaining team, and doubt their chances to make the playoffs. Had Roy Williams made that catch and they won against that pathetic KC team, I'd feel differently, but that loss basically killed their chances.
  10. Because the media doesn't know anything, and they know even less about what Theo is going to do.

  12. You have to think the Old Man's hatred for Irabu colored their approach to that market in the following years, but now that he's long gone, who knows how they will view it.
  13. While the woe is me crowd has been ridiculous, people making comps to the Ortiz acquisition need to take off the rose colored glasses. Ortiz was a productive hitter, he just wasn't awesome yet. He already had patience and power and was opsing over 800 for his career as a 26-year old, plus he was coming off a career year, as you should at 26. He didn't have nearly the same K-issues as Stewart has, and he wasn't playing in Coors either. These are entirely different circumstances.
  14. FWIW, this was the same commentary every time the Jim Hendry Cubs had a garbage offseason.
  15. Given my RB dilemma, I'm looking to hit a HR elsewhere. SF is the better defense and better bet to score more in this game, but the Bears might have the better chance at that HR. Unfortunately Denver doesn't turn the ball over, but they do punt a hell of a lot. Going by predicted scores, I'm going to barely lose despite being the higher seed (damn you Brady!). I'm keeping SF (@AZ) in for now, but somebody talk me into the Bears D/ST.
  16. I'm expecting a loss in Denver, but even a win doesn't "change everything". Their primary WC opponents still have the advantage, and a beatable Seattle team still is a big threat to this Bears team. They are already going to lose to Green Bay as well. A win against Denver could mean the difference between 9-7 and 10-6, which would likely make a difference in getting a WC. If we lose against Denver, we're not getting to 10 wins or the playoffs because we're not beating GB, like you said. But 10-6 can still easily leave the Bears on the outside, given ATL and DET schedules. And a win against this team doesn't make me any more confident about facing Seattle next week. We have an offense that on any given Sunday could be shut out. 1 week, even if it's an impressive win, won't change that. Every remaining game on the schedule is a major hurdle.
  17. More like medical marijuana retirement
  18. In partial seasons, in an extreme hitter's park. And he didn't hit .260 in any of them and only reached a .340 OBP in one of them. I'm pretty comfortable predicting he won't reach 260/340/440. Maybe 240/320/440 if everything goes right. According to Fangraphs, that would have been good for tied for 10th out of 14 qualified 3b. So why would you want to buyout his arb years for just 20 more OBP points?
  19. I would hate it. Theo tweaked a great team and he didn't have nearly as much financial freedom as he has on the Cubs. This isn't a great team, it needs a hell of a lot more than tweaks, and they have plenty of money now, and again next year to make big moves.
  20. Given all the talk about needing 9 starting pitchers I really doubt that happens, especially with Zambrano still on thin ice and Garza being their best trade chip. Although I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Wells dealt.
  21. Missourri was always sympathetic to the slave holders.
  22. You guys sure had a lot to say about a fairly meh transaction. I'm glad Colvin is gone. Don't really care much about Stewart. He's probably going to wash out in the not too distant future, but at least he has upside. Too bad they have to spend so much money on the guy. Eventually the Cubs have to stop being a small market team looking for nothing but guys coming off down years and actually acquire some players who have a really good chance of being really good.

  24. My guess is the Cubs were in the Cardinals bid to increase the price for the Cardinals and/or bring in other bidders, and I kind of feel Seattle is there just to do a favor their guy. It doesn't make sense for him to go there and have his power sapped by that stadium, especially if he wants to eventually sign another deal elsewhere.
  25. How did the other one mostly deal with Pujols? He just signed and has been most talked about more recently because of the news cycle, but that thread has been Pujols/Fielder all along, and all about the idea of the Cubs desperate for 1B and having 2 potential options to acquire free agent stud 1B.
