You don't let him in the building or let him make any moves, or have any conversations with personel. So does he get to work between now and the opening game? I doubt it. The NFL operating season "started" with free agency didn't it? Does a player that suspending for the first few games of the season get to participate in OTA's and training camp? I honestly don't know. Payton's is effective April 1st, so I would assume the others are as well.

It's going to be a circus. People are already calling for Sanchez's head on weekly basis. I just love the idea of recruiting Manning, then extending Sanchez to apologize for the flirtation and make clear Sanchez is their QB, then trading for Tebow and basically handing the fans somebody to latch onto because they've had nobody to prefer over Sanchez yet.

I wonder if Payton will be able to run practices and such and just not coach on Sundays? Or if he can't even be at the facility for a year? I don't see how they can swing that. If he's suspended he's suspended.

Real low or real stupid? Well if they win 72 and significantly outperform his expections presumably he would be very happy with the new regime and therefore I wouldn't call his plan real stupid at all.

LOL. Bears love to go defense in the 1st round...except that their last 4 1st rounders, and 9 of their last 12, have been offensive players. But they didn't love doing that.

Chicago Bears: North Carolina DL Quinton Coples The Bears love to go defense in round one and getting a talent like Coples in the middle of the first has to be considered a steal. Coples has draw comparisons to Chicago DE Julius Peppers and would make for an intimidating one-two punch off the edge.

So basically this list should include everybody's 8 position starters, plus their top 5 starters, 1 or 2 relievers and 1 or 2 bench players, for 16-17 players per team. How the hell does Reed Johnson make that list?

They're probably interested because even the biggest of Tebow-hating weirdos would have to admit he has value as a backup QB you have to give nothing up for I strangely feel very excited about this. He would be a great backup QB, and can learn under the capable tutelage of Tom Clements while Rodgers tears up the NFC North. As a bonus, Packers can also use him as a receiver/tight end in some trick formations. He would bring a lot to the table. Hopefully the Broncos allow Tebow to have some say in where he goes, as Tebow has earned that right. He would be a fool if he didn't give the Packers a good, hard look. My only worry is that his game is so much different than Aaron Rodgers. I usually like backups to have similar skill sets as the starter, so the offense doesn't have to reinvent itself if the starter gets hurt. But if you are just getting a much worse version of the starter, what's the point? I think a backup with that type of skillset is nearly ideal, unless your backup is a prospective future starter just getting his feet wet. I think Washington should get Tebow and utilize him with RGIII in some crazy ass scenarios.

what have they invested to get him so far? As a completely disinterested observer I've heard the name mentioned by some chicago outlets but it's hardly like the Peyton Manning sweepstakes or anything.

He has 520 PAs at Iowa and would be splitting time with Clevenger anyway. Let Castillo be the backup, give Clevenger the lion's share of starts, and hopefully you have an idea what you're looking at for catcher next year. The good thing with a backup catcher is he can get a lot of playing time in the majors, unlike something like a backup 1B or 3B. He's going to be 25 at the start of the season, has over 1600 professional PA over 6 seasons. Soto has been under 400 PA in 2 of last 3 seasons and hasn't been over 500 PA in 4 years, so there is plenty of opportunity for Castillo to play enough this year to continue developing.

There's plenty of reason to believe otherwise because without elite level defense no subpar passing team is going to sniff the super bowl. The Bears defense is nowhere near elite and a Campbell led Bears offense is going to be subpar. This isn't the 80's where half the SB teams put some schuck out there. If you are using your backup QB you are screwed anyway. The only value a backup is going to have is if you develop him and then trade him for more than you spent on him in the draft. Spending millions on a guy you don't want to play is dumb in a salary cap sport. It doesn't do a damn thing to improve the team and this team needed a hell of a lot to improve on.

McCown was fine as the #2. I just can't agree with that. I'm not willing to give up the season in the playoffs or whenever because Cutler can't play. QB's get hurt all the time in this league and the Bears weren't gonna be able to upgrade their line enough anyways. If they can't upgrade the line enough then their backup QB is just going to get slaughtered anyway.

It is not extremely valuable. It can be a lucrative path toward future earnings for the players involved, if they are young and have upside but that has absolutely nothing to do with your contention that it is extremely valuable. The 2nd RB does more work than your backup QB. Your third defensive end and tackles, your 3rd/4th and 5th WRs, those guys are all more important to the team. Most backup QBs are just a guy. Matt Cassel is just a guy. He filled in well and didn't kill his team so he got grossly overrated and overpaid as a result. In today's NFL it really doesn't matter who your backup QB is, because if you have to rely on him you aren't winning the super bowl. You need your starting QB to be very good and you need him to be playing. It's much more important to have a solid offensive line so your starter doesn't get killed and quality weapons so your starter has something to work with. A backup QB is an insurance policy you never want to cash in and will never be happy if he plays.
