I would assume they are going to, but they may have to consider extending Cutler this year to keep it reasonable.

Well, the draft is the most important time of the offseason, so there's some hope they can improve. But they should have done more here. There's talk of a glut of LB available and I'd like to see them do something on defense and not just special teams.

The Broncos were a decent team with a horrible QB. They needed to move on and develop a real QB, but that couldn't happen with the neanderthals demanding more Tebow. They play in the worst division in football and can easily dominate it next year with quality QB play. Manning gives them that chance. It's the easiest road to the playoffs for Peyton. If he can't hack it and falls apart quickly, then it wouldn't have worked for anybody, so you aren't making much of a point. This way, they can draft somebody this year and hope to get 2 years out of Manning. Plus, they can play a real offense and develop the other 10 players in the unit instead of dumbing it down to junior high level stuff that is centered around a one dimensional hack. That explains why they were so good with Kyle Orton. Kyle Orton isn't a quality QB.

Really? I could be wrong, but I think KyleJRM was the one that was really heads over heels for Travis Wood. I remember having some discussions with someone here about Wood, and I think it was Kyle. Could be wrong, though. There's really only one young-ish guy with upside, and that's Samardzija, and he's in his prime years (27). Garza is dead smack at the start of his prime years, and Volstad is close enough to it, but again, much as I like him, more of a 3/4 that could pass as a 2/3 depending on the situation, IMO. It's still odd to marvel at how cheap solid and young it is. Because it isn't that young. And most of the cheapness is very short-term.

Why do I want to know what's going on with the Chicago Cubs? I can understand why the concept may be foreign to you, but some fans *enjoy* their teams and want to know more about them. It's okay if you want to sit down and process that for a minute. Well that was dumb. Obviously I care about what's going on with the Cubs. What I don't understand is why you are annoyed by what you describe as management's silence regarding the competition for the rotation. There isn't much to be explained. There's a couple guys with contract situations and history that guarantee them spots, and a handful of other questionable guys who needed to have a good spring to win a spot. What do you expect to be explained to you that isn't already glaringly obvious? -

I don't know. If they thought Volstad was a better bet than Wood coming into ST, I respect that completely. It's a little annoying how quiet our management is on this stuff. I have no idea if turning the back of the rotation into some kind of ST horse race is coming from them or the media. What is there to be annoyed about? Why do you want to hear them spell things out? -
Simmons on podcast about Tebow, "I can think of 8 teams off the top of my head that are irrelevant and would become relevant the moment they threw Tim Tebow out there. If you aren't going to win the Super Bowl I can't imagine why that's not the play." I don't think I can think of 8 irrelevant NFL teams. Miami and Jacksonville can be considered that. Washington is arguably. Minnesota? Tampa? STL? Cleveland? There aren't many teams that should be considering a trade. WAS could be interesting considering they are set to sign RGIII. On one hand, you want to hand the keys to your new kid, but a Tebow RGIII tandem with a relatively low cap figure between the two makes sense. But Miami and Jacksonville are really the only 2 obvious ones.

And Wimbley May have just answered each other's questions. At this point I would think most hold ups are related to the 3-4 teams that are still deciding what to do at QB and/or what Manning is doing. Teams are either going to spend 20 million on one player or they aren't, so that leaves a lot of lesser free agents in limbo as they wait for teams to make their decision and then get in on bidding wars.

What do you think they can get in return? I'm not entirely sure that they care. I would think a couple later draft picks.

McDaniels is back in New England, that could be one possible source of influence. I could see the Patriots using him the way most people thought he could be useful coming out of college--in sort of a wildcat package. Maybe just a couple of plays a game. Maybe just in short yardage situations. I know Tebow never just wanted to be a wildcat QB, but the Patriots seem like the one team where players wouldn't argue. Belichick is thought of as a genius and I don't think Tebow would argue with him. Belichick also seems like he wants every possible tiny advantage he can get, and maybe he thinks that even for just 3-4 short yardage plays during a game that Tebow could give him an advantage. I can't imagine they would think of him as a serious option to be Brady's successor some day. As Brady gets older getting him off the field for a few plays a game could help, while utilizing Tebow for a few plays a game would also be the way to both maximize his abilities and keep him alive. New England can't run the ball, but they could with Tebow.

They have no faith in Tebow, and this is the perfect opportunity to get rid of him. It is possibly the last and only opportunity they will have to get rid of him and groom their own guy internally without stupid fans ruining it. If they keep him around and Peyton proves to be washed up in a year or two, they will once again feel all the pressure to give Tebow the job. Trade him now, with fans high on the idea of Manning, then draft somebody this year and start the process for the future right away.

I'm arguing against your insistence on pretending Roger can't or won't suspend without a conviction, let alone an arrest. He absolutely can, has, and will. This specific case doesn't seem to lend itself to a suspension, based on what we know, but if more facts emerge he could easily do it (if marshall somehow incited the brawl, if Marshall's bodyguard or friend did the punching, etc). There is no need for conviction for Roger Goodell to suspend a player. Most people have said that's kind of crazy, but it's just a fact. if he would have taken it to court and been cleared and if he never bought any college kids beer, goodell couldn't have enforced any punishment. That has nothing to do with the fact that without a conviction Goodell can, has and will suspend players.

jiminy christmas. I saw something that indicated the Pettite contract was not guaranteed so I started trying to find out and ended up throwing on YES, which most sites said was the source of the announcement. Mike Francesa is doing his simulcast and for the last 20 minutes he's just been watching the basketball game and making random comments about them. Very weird.

They aren't spending money on a memory. And it's not all that costly. They didn't want to spend $9m on more depth, so they spent $2.5m on a guy who could help them when they want him to help them. They don't care about April. The Yankees are going to contend at least through September and almost certaily going to be playoff bound.
