Yeah, I don't see 70-75 wins as being likely even if we did essentially nothing. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-absurdly-preliminary-2023-zips-projected-standings/ ZiPS put us at 74 before any team in the division has made any moves. I believe this takes the Brewers trade of Renfroe into account but that's it. The club will project just over .500 even with a boring and efficient offseason, the question is if Jed is gonna have the stones to stretch and get the team into the upper 80's. Depends on what you call a "boring and efficient offseason". They haven't filled any of their numerous holes yet, so they are far from being projected to be over .500.

nuh uh According to MLB Trade Values, Varsho is 74.5 and Reynolds is 59.9 which is at least one very good prospect (Alzolay, Hernandez, etc.) difference.

I suggested going after Reynolds the other day. He would cost less in prospects than Varsho and is controllable until 2026. He could certainly help the team until some of the OF prospects are ready.

It would take Thompson plus 3-4 more prospects yo get Varsho. According to MLB trade values, Varsho is 74.5 and Thompson is at 8,3.

He sounds like a weatherman (it might rain, but maybe not). He's hearing more about Swanson and Turner than Correa and Bogaerts, but that could change. Are they going to write a "big check" and he said he doesn't know, and it depends how big the check is going to be.

I totally agree with this. It's time to be proactive and use the assets (money and prospects) to actually build a contending team now. Waiting for years for prospects to reach their potentials is getting old when they suffer injuries and never really perform as we have hoped.

I know the price would be higher for a rival, but any of those guys would be perfect fits for the Cubs.

Probably worth noting if Cubs are both locked into Senga but need him to wait patiently for the real heroes to develop and show up The Cubs have the assets (money and prospects) to be a big market team with a chance to win now. Signing Senga, adding someone like Bellinger, maybe adding a tier 2 starter, sign Vasquez, and a smart trade or two makes us a solid team with a chance to win now.

If we're serious about winning, go get Brian Reynolds and quit worrying about CF for a few years. Using MLB trade values as a source, maybe a deal involving Davis, Morel, and Thompson. Once PCA is ready, move Reynolds over to left and trade Happ.

Dodgers waived Bellinger, now is the time to sign him to a 1-year deal to reestablish his value. Gives the Cubs time to ease Davis and Mervis into the starting lineup.

There's a lot to love about Nimmo, but the injury history is very worrisome. Your quote about his fWAR per 150 games is deceiving because he only approached 150 games once in his career and never even came close in all of the other years.

Bellinger trying to rebuild his value could be the solution to a few of those problems (CF/!B/"bat"/DH) or he could really be bad, but it might be worth a shot in CF. Obviously, trading for Ohtani would be the best solution.

On MLBTR chat today, Steve Adams thought if Bellinger is non-tendered, he might sign a 1-year pillow deal for about $10 million. At 27 years old, he might be worth signing and then let him become a FA in 2024.
