The Cubs cut Bote and literally nobody took him for league min. He has negative value. According to MLBTV, Escobar also has negative value (though Bote's is worse). That's why prospects might need to be added.

So I take it you don't think Morel can get better then. Morel can get better because he's young, which is why his trade value is high and he might be of interest to the Blue Jays. Meanwhile we get a solid catcher that's controlled for 3 more years.

I like Morel, but I think the Cubs ought to trade him while his value is high. MLBTV has Morel at 28.2, while Jansen is at 24.8. If they won't do an even swap, tweak the deal with prospects on both ends. Then see if the Mets will swap Escobar for Bote with necessary tweaking.

There is some speculation about the Cubs and Mancini, but I haven't heard anything at all about Will Myers. I assume Mancini might take less money/years, but Myers might be a viable option if the money/years are reasonable.

Why wouldn't he recruit for a team and a city that idolized him for 9 years. I'm sure after he got over the hurt feelings of being traded (like all of the others), he realized that baseball is a business, and he came out of it in a great spot.

Send them Bote instead of a 45-grade prospect to help with the money. McCann is owed $24 million/2 years, Carrasco is owed $14 million /1 year and Bote is owed $9 million /2 years. McCann + Carrasco + $15 million for Bote (add a 45-grade prospect if necessary).

I really don't think there's much of a plan. If there ever was a plan, it seems that it is basically gone now and they're waiting it out to see what they can get for a discounted rate.

That's Jed's only hope left - swing a blockbuster trade or two. Ohtani, Jansen, Lopez, Reynolds, Deevers, Varsho, etc. might be available for the right package of prospects.

but there are lots of guys who would still have fit into an efficiency plan with more bulk. jed can't be scared of 2 year deals. I mean the obvious answer to your question is that the offseason is not done yet, particularly in the "guys who will settle for 1-2 year deal" range. Like I'm nervous about who the other SP is going to be, since that's a position that's been picked over pretty good, but otherwise IMO it's just wait and see what happens with the shortstops before getting too depressed or elated. IMO it's telling that Jed was expedient in addressing CF, the thinnest position in FA. Then Jed needs to swing a blockbuster trade or two using some of those prospects that we seem reluctant to deal.

But we'll give Swanson 8 years? I don't want to even hypothetically defend the Cubs but... You're implying they're similar in age, position, and injury history, which is incorrect on all 3. I totally understand those points, but my point is that they seem willing to go to 8 years for a SS that that is a slight improvement over the current SS.

Still worth it But this time the "LH outfielder" will be in the best shape of his life Also he is sure to have fully reworked his swing during spring training. ... seventh time is a charm ... Let's hope so.

Yeah, I don't see 70-75 wins as being likely even if we did essentially nothing. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-absurdly-preliminary-2023-zips-projected-standings/ ZiPS put us at 74 before any team in the division has made any moves. I believe this takes the Brewers trade of Renfroe into account but that's it. The club will project just over .500 even with a boring and efficient offseason, the question is if Jed is gonna have the stones to stretch and get the team into the upper 80's. Depends on what you call a "boring and efficient offseason". They haven't filled any of their numerous holes yet, so they are far from being projected to be over .500.

nuh uh According to MLB Trade Values, Varsho is 74.5 and Reynolds is 59.9 which is at least one very good prospect (Alzolay, Hernandez, etc.) difference.

I suggested going after Reynolds the other day. He would cost less in prospects than Varsho and is controllable until 2026. He could certainly help the team until some of the OF prospects are ready.

It would take Thompson plus 3-4 more prospects yo get Varsho. According to MLB trade values, Varsho is 74.5 and Thompson is at 8,3.
