    That's a lot of "what ifs" as opposed to signing Bellinger. Bellinger fills a lot of voids for the Cubs (CF, 1B, power hitter, etc.).

    I think it will be a disappointment, because they would have wasted outstanding seasons by Bellinger, Stroman, Candelario, Swanson, Tauchman, Steele, Alzolay, Merryweather, etc. Combine that with the very real possibility of losing Bellinger, Stroman, and Candelario and we might be struggling to get to .500 next year.

    I think we can all agree that he ought to be given a good shot at making the team in spring training. If he shows that he belongs, then use him as 1B/DH. Of course, his ml stats might also make him attractive trade bait.

    Yeah, it's great to have highly ranked prospects, but they're only prospects until they prove themselves in the ML.

    No matter how the rest of this year plays out, the Cubs need to sign Bellinger for sure. It would be a huge regression losing Bellinger, Stroman, and Candelario during the off season.

    He has some value as a LH, cheap, 4th OF who can play all three positions.

    Trade him during the off season. Use him as a DH for the rest of the season.

    All the more reason to go all in on Soto. Trade Suzuki for a SP.

    Cron and Hand together in one deal shouldn't cost much, since neither has much trade value.

    Swanson has worked out great, but a contributing factor to signing him was that he was the cheapest of the top SS available too.

    1. Trade Stroman for the best deal you can get. 2. Trade for Eduardo Rodriguez to replace Stroman plus we have him at a reasonable price for the next 3 years. 3. Keep Bellinger and sign him to a 4–5-year contract.

    I feel like trading Bellinger not only shows we're giving up this season, but also points to 2-3 more years of mediocrity while we hope for the future. Whenever in the future that PCA is ready, put Bellinger at 1B.

    The Cubs ought to trade Stroman and Hendricks for the best pitching prospects they can get and use the money saved to extend Bellinger.

    I don't think this is true. At all. The Dodgers have an $100 million per year head start on every other team in the league via their tv deal, the Cubs are far from poor but they don’t have a structural advantage that approaches it. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/lets-update-the-estimated-local-tv-revenue-for-mlb-teams/ Instead of comparing them to the Dodgers or the Yankees/Mets, why don't we compare them to the Phillies, Padres, Blue Jays, Angels, Braves, Astros, and the Rangers. They certainly have the funds to outspend these teams.

    Tbf both the next Bregman *and* Machado are said to be in the org as well We seem to have a lot of "future Hall of Famers" in the organization, but somehow it loses something by the time they get here.

    My list of options never mentioned getting anything of value. Then there’s no point in anyone in the FO ever exploring trading him since it’s a waste of time There might have been someone out there that might be a better fit for the team (BP?) or someone with options left. The White Sox before getting Andrus might have taken a flyer on Bote as 2B/backup 3B.

    You were never getting anything of value for Bote, even before his contract extension. My list of options never mentioned getting anything of value.

    The Cubs should have traded Bote when they had a chance. Take another over-paid/negative trade value player, pay part of his contract, get some minor league roster filler, etc.

    So long as there’s cap space it’s more of a “sure, it’s your funeral anyway” thing on who, how, when, where, and what the money is spent. Heck because all the cool kids did it and there’s a network, some real estate, and probably more serious agendas to promote (2024’s an election year!)…they might even gift us a biscuit and go over for a couple years Hate to quote myself but here’s Tom Ricketts: :confetticannon: I'll wait and see what happens before I believe him.

    He certainly is muscular @ 5'11" and 195 lbs.

    Rios and Wisdom forming a nice platoon means Ricketts can avoid spending money on Machado next year.
