    Is it me or has Jones's time in CF increased since Soriano was more or less named the CF starter? I like to see Murton get some time in RF. Yeah, Jones's time has increased there. They wanted to get as many innings as possible in with Soriano to see if he could handle playing CF, and now they appear to be doing the same thing with Jones to see if he can back up Soriano there, thus eliminating the need for another player on the roster who needs to play CF.

    There are probably easier ways to find this, but if you go to the schedule on Cubs.com and go to the schedule, as you go through the months it will tell you if each game is going to be on WGN or not.     Marquis has been very lucky this spring too. Maybe a little bit, but he has done all the things he needs to in order to be successful so far this spring (I won't make any predictions for today's game). He has kept the walk totals low (2 in 9.0 IP). He has kept the ball in the ballpark (0 HR). He has kept the ball on the ground (16 GO/5 FO). Because of the ground balls, he has limited the number of XBH (1 off him so far) and also gotten a couple of DP. It's no wonder then that even with a high WHIP that he could keep the runs down. Now, obviously he has had a little bit of luck-he's not going to keep that 2 ERA because he won't be able to limit all the XBH-but if the others stay on a similar road and he keeps pitching well, he will be pretty good. The question then becomes if he can keep pitching well, and I guess today is the first step in answering that.

    Link That report has since changed though. 2 starts ago Miller was working in the 87-89 range and touching at 90-I haven't heard anything yet about his start the other day.

    Yup-that's exactly why I wanted Miller to get the start in the first place. There will be a time and a place when another starter is needed, and Guzman will be available at that time. Although IP might be a slightly misleading way to look at that-Lilly hasn't reached 200 innings because he can't get deep into games, not because he misses starts (32 starts 3 out of the last 4 years). I don't remember Hill having injury concerns about him, and they will stick with an ineffective Marquis for at least a month or month and a half, and of course there is still a decent chance for him to be effective. Miller is still the biggest risk, and the likelihood is that he'll miss some starts that Guzman will take, and one other starter will probably miss starts for injury/ineffectiveness, but it's probably up in the air which of the 4 it will be.

    Does the fact that Guzman pitched today mean that the 5th starter battle is over? I found it interesting that they put him in a situation where he could only go one inning, instead of at least pitching him for a few innings after another pitcher like they are doing with Hill. That certainly doesn't suggest that they are looking him for a starter position in the majors anymore.

    Balanced hitting today-just not enough of it. everybody but Coats has been on base at least once, and only Barrett has been on twice.

    Where did Thad Matta coach before he went to Ohio State? I can't quite remember... He was a long time assistant coach for Chuck Daily in the NBA. I don't know if he had a college coaching gig though. Xavier, which is what Andy was going for, since they talked that up during the Xavier-OSU game. Yeah, about 500 times-just for info, before that Matta was one of those coaches who spent a year being the head coach at Butler.

    Well, it's not like Archuleta is that old-pay for his retirement? If he can get back to what he was doing his first few years he could play another 7 years easily.

    The club has already decided they are definitely going with 2 extra infielders, if that be from inside the club or outside the club. I don't think what Pagan does will affect Perez at all, unless Pagan does so well they trade him for another infielder bumping Perez I guess.

    Thank you so much for your help. It is much appreciated. I have a possible deal out there now where I trade Carlos Lee and ? for Harang and Myers. If he asks for Markakis, should I take it? I already have another deal confirmed if that deal goes through where I flip Harang for Aramis straight up.

    After today? According to Vance's link, Marquis is supposed to start tomorrow and Prior on Thursday.

    I could live with that OPS if he's putting up his .355 career OBP, or better yet, the .365-.367 he had in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Seconded. Who cares if all he does is walk and get singles. We have other guys to get extra base hits. Eckstein's was only .694 last year. Yeah, if Theriot can get on base in the upper .300's, I don't see why his lack of power should be a concern. My point is, we already know Derosa's not going to break .340 OBP. Why not give the kid with more upside a chance? We know that he is not going to break .340? Considering last year was .357, I'm not sure how we know he's not going to break that-even if he has a lesser year this year he still has a shot of breaking that number, and even though he's not hitting well at all he's having a good OBP spring. He did that @ 31 years old, playing in one of the best hitting environments in baseball. Last time he was in the NL, he posted .293 Agreed, but he also has completely changed his hitting stance at the plate since then as well. I would agree that it is unknown if he will put up a .340+ OBP, but it certainly would be a reasonable outcome if he did so.

    Somebody inserted the [against left-handers] part. Lou could be talking about the 10-15 games Jones doesn't start due to normal rest, which would still leave him a lot of PA against LHP. That's exactly what I was thinking-that was more of the writer's opinion than anything. It's possible that he got that opinion from something else Lou said, but from just that quote alone it could be something that the writer just made up himself.

    I do think when Theriot plays at 2B, 3B, or the OF he will bat 2nd-that seems to be how Lou is doing it this spring, and it makes sense. On any days that he happens to play SS, he'll probably bat 8th.

    I have been trying to think about which pitcher this originally applied to-I haven't had a name pop up in my head, but I'm sure when I hear it it will seem like it should have been obvious.

    Howry did a good job in his outing today. 1 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball with only 1 H allowed. Middle of 5, still 14-4 Cubs over Seattle.

    I would agree, and I think that's a big reason why they chose DeRosa over some of the other 2B available. He gives you options to be able to let the development of somebody like Patterson proceed naturally, and then DeRosa still has value even when the time may come when Patterson (or Theriot) would beat him out for the starting job. That's a nice thing to have coming into the next couple years.

    Against Seattle, the Cubs add 3 more in the 4th on 4 more hits. It is 14-4 Cubs after 4 now, and some of the backups are coming in (Walker in for Soriano, McGehee in for Ramirez).

    Miller got through 3 1/3: his line-3 1/3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR He was ok except he gave up the one big swing to Beltre (3 run HR) that cost him his entire outing. Theriot committed an error in the 4th, but Howry came in and got the Cubs out of the inning with no damage.

    When you look at his home/away splits for his last 5 years in the Metrodome, it will be more likely he will be closer to 2006 than 2004-2005.
