i truly didn't think it would happen this fast, so clearly they've had an understanding for a while. all the Raiders noise is so funny in retrospect - clearly Johnson had known he's coming to the Bears for weeks now.

I can’t divine what goes on in Ben Johnson’s mind, but I can’t imagine there’s a clearly better option for a first time head coach than Chicago. Is there organizational dysfunction here? Absolutely. Is it any worse than what we see in Las Vegas or Jacksonville? Not that I can tell. as the luminary John Fox said: “it’s all a problem.” There’s no wonderful fun job to walk into as a first time head coach. You’re always entering a pretty bad situation. (Unless you’re like, Mike tomlin, but that’s a very rare situation). I have to imagine Chicago is a pretty attractive franchise for a multitude of reasons, but I don’t know what Johnson values in the team he goes to. So it’s Kremlinology for us.

Jayden Daniels was clearer the better player this year. But that is fine, if Caleb is still a very good QB (and I think he showed quite a lot to feel good about this year) If Daniels ends up the superior player (and much remains to be seen) and Williams is still an excellent QB, I definitely won’t complain. We’d have an excellent QB!

I would never, ever want to trade real assets for a coach, no matter how good the coach is. You shouldn’t spend player acquisition capital on something that should only cost money.

I think the Bears have a plan: Ben Johnson. Failing that: Mike McCarthy. I don't love it, but thats what the signs point to.

I would love to see what Roschon Johnson could do with more 1st and 2nd down runs. I feel like he got really pigeonholed into being a short yardage back and I would have liked to see him given more to do. Ah well.

Yes I think its safe to say that for nearly every assistant coach in the NFL, any head coaching job is preferable to staying an assistant. There are rare exceptions (Johnson being one of them, but that was only for a year), but yeah. Even the worst job is 100000x more prestigious, interesting, ambitious and fun than being an assistant.

If I'm choosing between the Raiders organization and team as it is constructed right now and the Bears organization and team as it is constructed, I'm picking the Bears 9 times out of 10. But I'm also not Ben Johnson, so my opinion doesn't matter.

My opinion of the Running Back position has moved up a bit in the last year (and eating crow on the Lions drafting Jahmyr Gibbs), but not nearly enough to think the Bears should draft a RB 10th overall. It's one thing for the Lions to be able to draft one while putting together a stud offensive line as a finishing touch of a team that is ready to make the playoffs, its another on a team that has maybe 1 lineman they feel really good about.

-9 is a crazy line for the Lions, but of course they looked really, really good all season long. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Commanders keep it close. All of these are great match ups. The NFL did do it well this year.

I wouldn't be overly upset if we ended up with Carroll (he's an extremely accomplished coach) but I would absolutely be disappointed. Carroll can only, at best, be a stopgap guy. He's a Floor Guy. And he doesn't solve the most crucial problem facing the Bears; Developing Caleb Williams and installing a professional offense. I mean, it's almost a little maddening to think about who was our OC to start 2024 and who Pete Carroll's last OC was.

If I'm Ben Johnson i probably want to go to the Bears over the Raiders, factoring in everything. But i dunno what that dude prioritizes or wants, so its impossible to say. Also its completely insane we let a guy who's an owner of an NFL franchise call games. C'mon now, have some semblance of propriety here.
