For example, even if we get out of this unscathed, we're likely to be facing a well-above-average pitcher in the 9th. What about the 8th inning?

    We're not winning, so Lou refuses to do that. Once it goes to bases loaded, no outs, your odds of winning are 11%. Marmol would be a waste. He can't pitch in every single game that is close between now and the end of the season. Sometimes, you just have to suck it up and go with someone else. I don't know if that is necessarily the best way to gauge using Marmol, the leverage in this situation is enormous, even if our actually chances seem low
