  1. That's an enormously bold thing to say. I'm sure there is alot more that you and I don't know about as opposed to what we DO know about. I played organized baseball for 16 years and in that time, I saw fights occur over every possible thing imaginable. I've even seen a fight between a 1B and a 2B because the 1B thought that the 2b had thrown the ball too hard to him on a ground out. I have no problem with suspending Barrett, but 10 games is a ton. That's funny! (The 1st & 2nd basemen fighting). Reminds me of Major League 3 (lets not even start that debate) when the twin brothers played 2nd and Short. Was that "Back to the Minors"....or am I thinking of the 4th one?
  2. It would be cool if Maddux retired with the Cubs, Smoltz with the Tigers and Glavine with the Braves.
  3. I'd rather bean him. Also, preferably by Zambrano.
  4. I'd also like to see Roger Clemens punched in the face, preferably by Zambrano.
  5. I've said this before and I'll say it again. If people think that Giles was never going to come to the Cubs because he's a "west coast guy", what makes them think Zito is going to come to the Cubs? Sure, he could get traded, but there's no reason to think he'd sign long term. He's a west coast guy...him and Giles should start a club. That's right. Bigbad, this contradicts your thoughts on Giles.
  6. So, you are about to hit pay dirt on the free agent market. Your value couldn't be any higher. Do you? A. Sign an extension with a team you just got traded to? B. Let 30 teams attempt to outbid each other? So, a crappy, poorly run organization like the Cubs has this illusion that they are just 1 good player away from turning things around, so they trade off most of their farm for a guy like Soriano. Keeping in mind the Cubs are one of the most futile organizations in any sport, do you? A. Sign an extension to play on a team that may never be competitive? B. Let 30 teams attempt to outbid each other, and choose one of the teams that has the best chance of reaching the World Series some day? Zito? The dude loves to surf. Expect him to sign with San Diego or LA next year. Trading for him and giving him an extension will require lying to him about the size of the waves on Lake Michigan. Rolen could have created one of the biggest bidding wars ever, but he signed with St. Louis right away. The Cubs were attrocious when they traded for White, who was a good young player back then, and he signed before even getting here.
  7. 6 games. So a part-time player (pitcher) gets 6 games for running around 50 already fighting individuals to piledrive someone for no apparent reason and gets only 6 games. An everyday player punches a guy who just ran him over and gets 10 games. That was a fight, though. If the "dude" was out there in the middle of a fight, he at least had the opportunity to defend himself......... or should have. Barrett sucker-punched a guy who had no reason to expect it, and was completely defenseless. To me, there's a difference. Besides, at least Farnsworth's assault was effective. A.J. is a walking piece of crap. Even if I did think Barrett got off light, I wouldn't say anything.
  8. They looked stupid by letting the appeal go on for so long, so they decided to be firm to make up for it in the hopes everybody would forget.
  9. It's always been inconsistent. Ruth once punched an umpire in the face, and all he got was a 100 dollar fine. Rose shoved an ump and got 30 games. Naturally, umpire offenses are a little more serious, but the suspensions for physical contact in MLB are all over the place.
  10. I'd like to try a game thread just to see if they win. I'm 0-0, so who knows. Let me know if/what game I can do. Thanks.
  11. Does Micah Bowie have enough innings to qualify?
  12. I agree. I was a fan or Rothschild but it's wearing down. I never saw anything special from Spier, but I think a lot of people here like him for some reason. I think people like him because he has been solid at 3B. Having wavin wendell as your predecessor will do that to ya. Yeah, I'd just rather not keep anyone around connected to Hendry and Baker. It's nothing personal against him, but since he hasn't done anything noteworthy, flush this whole thing down the toliet and start over. The only reason why Speier is connected with Baker, is because they are both on the staff. Speier is not a "Baker boy" and Speier replaced a "Baker Boy" in Wendall. I still prefer to keep Speier, seeing as I think he would make a solid bench coach and/or manager. If for nothing else, firing Baker means Rothschild, Pole, Clines, Sarge are gone...I can't say the Cubs would do anything BUT improve. I certainly don't want them to even think about the idea of keeping Speier as a manager for next year.
  13. The smart move would be to hire Don Zimmer to finish his career as a big league manager with the Cubs this year. The reason is because you would get more sellouts even though the team is horrible.
  14. It would be awesome to get Alex Rios, even if he doesn't do as well next year (not that I see why he wouldn't). Plus, his defense is flat out amazing.
  15. Don't be surprised if "it ain't over till it's over" Hendry picks the carcass and loses our better prospects in the process.
  16. Well, I'm sure they'll play the Cubs soon.
  17. If it's just in a lame duck role, I'm fine with him finishing out the season.
  18. LaTroy Hawkins' ERA as a Cub - 2.76. That statement is so wrong it's not even funny. 69% Save Percentage disagrees. A good percentage of those came as a set-up man, where he only had opportunities to lose the lead and never an opportunity to get a save. Every set-up man in the majors has a dreadful save percentage, because every time they blow a lead, it's a blow save, but when they do their job, it's a hold and not a save. In any event, the notion that a guy that gave up less than 3 runs per 9 innings (substantially better than league average) is somehow the "worst" Cub pitcher over any period of time is insane. In fact, it's so insane that I can't even believe you're taking that position. If I remember correctly, Hawkins was very good as a setup man but moved to closer early in the season and had a terrible time holding a lead ever since. Maybe you take out a couple blown saves, but it's still an attrocious percentage for a closer. 80% is pretty much the bare min. to hold the position on a halfway decent team.

  20. Rothschild has to go also. Chris Spier has done a good job at 3rd base. I find the Speier love interesting. How do we know he has done a good job? I'm NOT diminishing his role as a 3rd base coach, I think it is the most difficult coaching job besides the Manager. It is just that beyond getting someone thrown out at home his job flies under the radar. I have no problem with him staying, just not sure how you (you being people outside the organization who aren't privy to the day to day handlings of the club) can evaluate his performance. He's certainly no Wendell.... Well, he rarely if ever has to make any decisions so it's hard for him to look bad I guess. It's not that, he has plenty of decisions to make when it comes to sending/holding runners etc. I also know that Speier works with the infielders as well. It is just that a lot his work goes unnoticedexcept when he has to send someone home to score. To home plate? Maybe in Prior and Wood sim games.

I still like Thomas. We need someone who can drive to the hoop and posterize people. The Bulls rarely have aggresive big men.
  24. EDIT- I misread. Both those guys need to be fired ASAP.
  25. Actually, I would like to see him go as well. I don't like his philosophy pertaining to free agents, which is a pretty significant problem. I only say he stays because the Cubs are making solid profits. I hear ya. I don't see the Trib firing him that's for sure, but as a fan I could care less about the profits, I just want to see winning baseball for crying out loud. As Cubs fans we have it so bad. Agreed, but at the same time, I don't see myself ever being a fan of a Cubs V.P. under Tribune control.
