  1. You could do all kinds of things in the future if you had Cabrera. I think he could play 2nd as well, though I would not move him there for Jones.
  2. I don't see why they can't get Wilson because of Casey's health. Pittsburgh is already in the dumpster. Wilson is hardly the centerpiece of that franchise, and is probably gone come free agency anyway. Give 'em Sing to play 1B for now, and an arm, save them a few bucks. Agreed. This seems like a doable deal for a player that could help us a lot this year.
  3. Cubs are gonna win this game tonight. I see Williams having another really good start.
  4. I could be wrong, but I think Jones will pick up some slack.
  5. Why not just start Mabry all year and use Lee's money for something else then? We'd win like 3-5 games less, right?
  6. I'm not saying you can't win with him. The Marlins certainly are lucky to have him. However, I wouldn't do "whatever it takes" to get a guy that hasn't learned how to be a pro in the clubhouse. See http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/content/sports/epaper/2006/03/31/a1b_cabrera_0331.html Just my $.02. Never said he wasn't good, never said a team couldn't win with him, just noting that IMO, he isn't worth the farm. I don't view him as being as complete as Pujols (who is worth the farm) and other great players because he doesn't have the right attitude and work ethic to justify "whatever it takes" to land him. Well, all I care about is winning, it doesn't matter to me if he isn't liked.
  7. Restovich could be a nice surprise. Yugo power!
  8. From the view I had of the Marlins in 2003, Cabrera seemed like a bit of an ass, but it certainly didn't seem to affect the team negatively.
  9. uh...if that's true...wow. Silvy and Carm talked about it and replayed the clip. Gammons said it but I don't know if DLee said that to him. Although, it would seem crass for him to make it up. I wouldn't put it past him, he does it with trade rumors all the time.
  10. Gammons didn't do anything wrong, but this makes me dislike him even more.
  11. Z has attitude problems but nobody seems to have a problem with him being on the team.
  12. I think for 18-20 million, Clemens would pitch for any competitive team, maybe even a non-competitive team like the Rangers.
  13. Haha, Modzilla in the house make you cry like babies.
  14. I think I'd prefer trading one of those releivers to the Yankees for Pena and a mid-level prospect.
  15. I made a new thread in Transactions, let's move the Cabrera debate over there.
  16. In baseball the players don't really play as a team at all. It's all about individual performance. For this reason, I think Cuban would be successful as Cubs owner/GM. He would get top players at every position like the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox do.
  17. It deals with a proposed transaction, so it would be best if the Cabrera conversation shifted to one of the threads in Transactions. Thanks.
  18. I'm not sure you understand the magnitude of top prospects it would require to obtain Miguel Cabrera. Look at one of the other threads - one poster made a very good post regarding the Beckett trade and the amount of prospects the Red Sox had to give up to get him. Not only is Beckett injury-prone, the Red Sox had to take on Mike Lowell's contract, as well. Cabrera is much more valuable than Josh Beckett, so the cost in terms of players to obtain him is going to be astronomical. Simply put, the Cubs cannot obtain Miguel Cabrera without completely destroying their farm system and obliterating any chances to compete for years to come. The team they would have with Cabrera would keep them competitive for years to come though. I'd say you would have 3-4 years to develop new prospects. I disagree. Take this to one of the plethora of threads about Miguel Cabrera (and I suggest you read them thoroughly, as you are doing nothing but rehashing arguments that have already been made) - this is not the place for it, as this is beginning to hijack this thread. This thread is about what to do now that Lee is hurt. The only argument you could make is that the Cubs wouldn't be able to afford to keep such a talented team together.

  20. This has been discussed over and over, and the general consensus seems to be that there is no way the Cubs can acquire Cabrera without essentially destroying their entire minor league system. A team like Arizona or Anaheim can make a reasonable offer with all of their top prospects to acquire Cabrera - much moreso than the Cubs can. I'd say there's no chance we can get Cabrera, so it's time to look at other options. Lee's numbers are not getting replaced, so maybe we can strengthen some other part of the lineup. What difference does it make if it costs the Cubs a lot in prospects? What's the point of putting out a team just good enough to compete for a playoff spot. The Cubs need to make a move that makes them one of the elite teams at least once. Cabrera might not push the Cubs over the top. If that's the case, the farm system is ruined for years to come. Is that worth it? I think it easily be the best team the Cubs have had at least since 45. That makes it worth it to me.

  22. I think it makes us a lot better for this year and next year, and that is why I would do it. It makes us legit World Series contenders and the Lee injury has no negative impact on the season. Look at the lineup w/Lee: Pierre Walker Lee Teixeira Ramirez Barrett Murton Cedeno
  23. Yes, I am sure Texas would be thrilled to trade a 25 year old stud who put up the 7th best OPS+ in the AL last year, for a major leaguer who can't stay healthy, plus either a minor leaguer who can't stay healthy, or a minor leaguer who might make it as a 4th starter. There may not be enough alcohol in the world to get Jon Daniels to consider that deal. Throw in Pie and Epatt, I don't care. Which is why it is a pretty good thing that you are not the GM. Sometimes you have to give a lot and get a young superstar like Teixera. That's never a bad move. It's a strategy that has the won the Cards a lot of division titles in recent years. It has? How, aside from the Rolen deal--which was for a FA to be? They got fleeced on the Mulder deal. To me, your proposal reeks a scent much more similar to the Nationals giving up Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips for Bartolo Colon. How is that trade working out for the Nationals? First off, he is signed through 2007. Secondly, why are you so confident in the Cubs farm system? The Cards did it in the Kennedy-Edmonds deal They did it for McGwire. They did it for Darryl Kile as well.
  24. What's the strategy for when Lee is back? He moves to the outfield, he's played there a little with the Rangers. That was just to get him in the lineup. Most of those games were in 2003 when A) he was a rookie and B) the Rangers had Palmeiro and Jurassic Carl. I would have found a way to get all 3 in the lineup too. Just liked you'd find a way to get Lee and Tex in the lineup at the same time if we had both.
