  1. Agreed. Should be a very low base with some decent incentives. Probably better than giving a nearly 37 year old Hiroki Kuroda 2/$27.
  2. Who the hell wants to trade for a $22MM shortstop with limited power who can no longer field or run in 2015? This thing is going to be an albatross.
  3. Who are all these examples of old guys that Hendry doled out huge money to? Soriano and who else? Hendry sucked because he didn't know what made good players good (valued the wrong qualities) and because the front office was stuck in the past in general with regard to running an organization. He didn't suck because he was doling out $20M a year to 35 year olds. Soriano is enough of a sample size. We also had to eat money to get Sosa and now possibly Zambrano out of town. We overpaid Maddux because of his name/Chicago ties, signed numerous mid-30s relievers for too long (Remlinger, Eyre, Howry, etc..), not to mention the general overpaying of veterans regardless of age (Grabow, Koyie Hill, Neifi, etc..). Hell, we're probably going to end up overpaying Dempster for next season and with Hendry, he probably would have already gotten another extension.
  4. it's so [expletive] inspirational...it will never grow old in my opinion. Great speech, but yet another instance where someone dying in the public eye covers up what a slimeball he was in real life. Not to go all spongeworthy but NCAA violations doesn't make somebody a slimeball of a person. I'd say that speech and what it's inspired for caancer research more than makes up for the fact that he was forced out at NC State Agreed, but he also fostered a culture of drug use and terrible grades and whatnot.
  5. Joe Cowley is also mentally challenged. IT'S A SOX TOWN NOW DEAL WITH IT Trading Zambrano will change that, though. People will love the Cubs more, duh! Too bad it wasn't the actual Bryan LaHair on the Marlins so we could get a net new white guy!!!!
  6. Anyone else surprised that Pujols AAV is only going to be $20-$22.5MM? I know he's getting a 10 year deal, but before the season, it was expected that his offer would increase significantly to the 8/$240 to 10/$300 range. I know he got hurt a bit and the Cardinals winning the WS lowered his value (as weird as that sounds) since they no longer need to please their fans as much. I understand he may have had some 5/$150 offers or something out there that we don't know of, but I am kind of shocked that his AAV will be less than CC Sabathia, ARod, Ryan Howard, Cliff Lee, Joe Mauer, Johan Santana, Mark Teixeira, and possibly Adrian Gonzalez, Ryan Braun, and Carl Crawford, and possibly the same as Roy Halladay, and Matt Kemp. Overall, a good sign for baseball that most GMs are realizing that paying players after age 35 is very risky at best and dumb at worst. The Hendry's of the world are few and far between these days.
  7. Why would Tampa trade for an $8MM closer and a C going to arbitration and a guy who is at the end of his career for a top flight starter that they would only trade to save money? Come on man.
  8. You'll get nothing and like it. Seriously, though, why are you a Magic, Bears, Cubs fan? WHY OH WHY ARE THERE CUBS/MAGIC FANS? THAT'S JUST NOT NATURAL!! I'm a Dolphins/Cubs/Lakers fan. Don't think I've ever met another, though I do know another Lakers/Dolphins fan. Nothing like rooting for the Cubs plus two teams that were very good in the 80s. Always fun to meet those people. I know a guy who is a Braves/Bills fan. Early 90s much? Like LeBron, who is a Yankees/Cowboys fan.

  10. Trading Garza frees up about 9 million. Maybe save 4 million in a Soriano deal and boom, you can sign Kuroda for two years 27 million and likely get somewhat similar production without making a dent in the amount of money we currently have available to spend. In my scenaio, you'd still likely have around 51 million left (current 40 million available + 11 that would have been allocated to draft) to use on Darvish, Fielder, and likely another solid signing. You get a likely improved rotation (Darvish/Kuroda/Dempster/Zambrano/Wells), you get Fielder, and you get what is hopefully multiple top prospects (can I get a Wil Myers?). Still can trade for Headley. Just throwing that out there, as most people tend to forget the money we save in a Garza deal can go directly towards replacing him. Obviously, this is moot if we don't get the right offer of top prospects. I guess, but I'm not really wild about signing a 35 year old Hiroki Kuroda to a $13.5 AAV deal, especially after he's pitched in the cavernous and hitting starved NL West. Those prospects better be pretty damn highly regarded.
  11. If we lose out on Pujols and Fielder, would trying to get them to pick up a lot of Dunn's contract be something to consider or are folks too scared from this past season's numbers? Absolutely, positively not. If he has to play the field, he's barely an average overall player even when his bat is good. The gap between Soriano and Dunn last season in fWar was bigger than the gap between Albert Pujols and Darwin Barney. No interest at all. Agreed. Besides this, how pissed you think Paul Konerko is right now for resigning with a team that went from "All In" to "The Start of a Rebuilding" instead of being a difference maker with the Angels or some other team he could have made the post season with?
  12. Bonds was worth 88.2 WAR in his first 10 years with the Giants (although that does include 25.4 for 2001 and 2002, the last of those 10 years, when he was obviously juicing).
  13. ARod was worth 64.8 WAR (~$244.3MM in value according to fangraphs--2001 is an estimate due to there not being value assigned that year, but it's pretty close) in the 10 years starting with his signing in Texas (10 years, $250MM). That's about all you can ask for.
  14. Of course he is. He is under contract for two more seasons. Plus whatever compensation they would get for him by offering arbitration under the new system. Or they could sign him to an extension. It's not like we're talking about a 35 year old guy who only has 2 more seasons left in him.
  15. If the Cubs sign Fielder and then trade Garza, that would seem to be a conflict of interest unless they are getting a guaranteed young stud pitcher, which is basically not going to happen. In what bizarro world is that a conflict of interest? The bizarro world where if you sign Fielder or Pujols you have to be an immediate contender, otherwise it's a waste of time. Especially if its Pujols or Fielder on a 5 year contract.

  17. Let's say he takes 5/$125 or even 5/$135 and then is a free agent again at 32. If you're the Cubs, do you do that? I would say yes. Sure, 2012 and possibly 2013 would be a waste, but you have him for 2014-2016 when you should, theoretically, be the best team in the division if you account for front office staff and resources. And, you have him playing for another contract and don't have to worry as much about the fatness risk or diminishing athleticism for playing the field risk.
  18. Yeah, the playoff thing is a bit of overkill. If you dominate that "conference" by a ton of points in the regular season, you shouldn't necessarily have to prove that dominance again by beating them in the playoffs. If that's the way the seeds between 2 "conferences" play out, then, sure, play them. But, if not, why should the Hawks have to risk losing to a team like the Blues that they have played 6 times already. Seems like overkill. The meatball fan rivalries will be fun, though.
  19. shut up I really do, the Arkansas State guys I know are really bummed about losing him. Who the hell has "Arkansas State guys"? Work contacts in Jonesboro and Brinkley. I'm very big down there. Congrats?
  20. shut up I really do, the Arkansas State guys I know are really bummed about losing him. Who the hell has "Arkansas State guys"?
  21. Yep. If the Bears aren't making the playoffs, I want the NFL to explode. If Tebow wins this one, I'm hoping he wins about 7 more in a row.
  22. Super frustrating, but encouraging that DePaul has already beaten 2 major conference programs and lost to 2 others by a combined 3 points. They'll still suck overall, particularly now that they have 9 healthy scholarship players and will be worn down by the end of the year, but the progress is being made. They should make the postseason next year and go from there. Purnell is going to be fine.
  23. Would the Artist Formerly Known as Leo Nunez be a worthwhile buy low candidate if we were to trade Marmol? Apparently he may have visa problems and may not be cleared to play. Also, his Fly Ball % was almost 50% last year, not good for a closer in Wrigley.
  24. If McNabb did, it would hit the ground...
