  1. 85 year old people can't take this kind of stress. I'm officially selecting Joe Paterno in the first round of the 2012 dead pool.
  2. Interesting. Then I'm changing my tune. Bears 24, Lions 21.
  3. This type of tampering gets Moore a lecture from Selig. At worst there's a small fine. No chance the Cubs benefit from it though. That's what I figured. Oh well, worth a shot.
  4. I'm pretty damn excited about this game. If the Bears win, it would take a big time meltdown to not make the playoffs. That being said, I think the Lions are a terrible matchup for the Bears, moreso if Best is healthy. I'll say: Lions 28, Bears 24.
  5. Any chance Moore mentioning Zambrano by name could lead to a tampering charge and maybe some undeserved, but free draft picks or cash?
  6. Maybe he molested some kids in the locker room 10 years ago...
  7. The fact that they basically have no chance to get in is really disheartening. I know they probably wouldn't be undefeated in the SEC, but why even have them in Division 1, then? There is literally nothing more they can do and still have no chance to win a title except switch conferences, which is easier said than done. Why not just go to 3 divisions in football so those schools can actually have a reason to exist? Kids that go to the MAC, WAC, Mtn. West, etc... should at least realistically have a chance to win a title, even if its in a second division of NCAA or something. It's literally the only sport in the world where you can go undefeated and not even have a chance to win a championship in that division. It makes boxing look good. [expletive] college football.
  8. But think of the children! And there it is.
  9. Screw that. If they give him the contract he wants at this point it's going to blow up in their faces. Tag him and pay him big money year-to-year. Yeah, his little media tour is going to do more to piss off the Bears than it will to get him paid. They're handling this extremely well. The only risk is if he holds out next year, which would be a ballsy move for a guy about to make $7.7 million guaranteed (or whatever the franchise # ends up being).
  10. I'd actually get a pretty good laugh out of it, moreso if Theo/Hoyer hires Martinez. Yeah. It would basically be the equivalent of Theo taking the #23 flag down from the flagpole, wiping his butt with it, and running it back up there. Thanks for playing Ryno, but instead of a lifetime of sac bunts, we're going to hire the guy who banged your wife, but isn't a high school manager. Peace.
  11. You're really selling Gary Bettman short. damn, beat me to it. Did Stern retire? Yeah, at the moment, you could make an argument for Selig to be the best pro commissioner. Goodell handled the lockout OK, but has made some dumb decisions as well (cramming London down our throats, the lockout in general, a few of the licensing issues with the NFL aren't great, too much preseason, etc...). Bud has his problems (AS Game, replay, awful YouTube policy, blackouts, etc...), but he's also been primarily responsible for the Wild Card, realignment, MLB Network, solid attendance, etc. Better than Bettman and currently better than Stern.
  12. Do Mets fans really hate David Wright? Awesome. Easier to acquire. Not all of them. But a large vocal number of them constantly berate him. So he's like their Aramis? Even though most of the fans like Aramis, all of the unfortunately "important" media hates him (Kaplan, Sullivan, etc...)
  13. Cubs World Series game Super Bowl Kentucky Derby Bulls Finals game Important football game at Cowboys stadium There are about 50 college football stadiums I'd like to hit someday as well. I stupidly cheaped out for the Hawks Stanley Cup games, but went to game 6 vs. Vancouver last year and I'll be damned if that wasn't as exciting as any Finals game could be, despite having less on the line. Also, have made it to most of the baseball stadiums worth going to, particularly the older ones (Fenway, Dodger, old Yankee).
  14. Reyes also had another at 5.8, though it was highly due to his best defensive season (2007). Prince also had a 5.5 this season compared to Reyes' 6.2.
  15. That I can agree with. The Cubs handled Theriot pretty well in that regard. If they are OK doing that with Barney, etc, that would be fine...as long as they can make up for it with star players at other positions. The only problem is that there is really no one in the system that we can project to be a star player the next 3 years. Brett Jackson could be above average in CF and give us good value, but that's not good enough to win titles. The Cards do a decent job of this with some of their guys (Craig, Jay, Freese, 2B, etc..) but they also have Pujols and Holliday to supplement that.
  16. I don't think he fits either of the last 2 qualities. Up the middle is the one spot we don't need to bring in new players for. Between Soto, Castro, Jackson/Szczur, and Barney/DeWitt/DJL/Flaherty/Gonzalez, the Cubs should be fine. Yeah, he hasn't really shown a high OBP until last year when he was .384, which is pretty damn good. From 06-08, he was around .350, which isn't good enough for a highly paid top of the order hitter. Also, I still think he's a pretty damn good defender, especially if moved to 2B. Not worth the risk of another terrible contract, probably, though. The only thing about the up the middle "prospects" we have is that outside of Castro, none of them have "star" potential and the Barney/DeWitt/DJL/Flaherty poo-poo platter all have a chance to be below league average, meaning we'll have to have some sort of option at 2B that could be decent at some point if we plan on contending.
  17. Does he fit the mold of in his prime, up the middle, high OBP, elite defender that Theo has mentioned? Obviously you have the injury concern and he'll probably be overpaid, but would a 5/$85MM be something the Cubs should be interested in? Move Reyes or Castro to 2B and then you have an up the middle core of Soto, Reyes, Castro, and Jackson for the next few years. Could be interesting, but he'll probably get way more than $85MM.
  18. The funny thing is, read the quotes from Fowler, they wanted to come to Manhattan (biggest Gameday crowd ever was there). Chokelahoma losing at home to a team KSU beat at TT kept that from happening. That being said, either one of 2 things will happen this weekend: Oklahoma will come in and be down without the possibility of playing for a National title and KSU will win, or most likely, OU will be pissed off and will come in and kick our butt. Can't wait to see which way it goes. That's BS! I wish they were going to Manhattan. Much cooler than having it in LA where they have been 1,000 times and probably will be again sometime. There's a chance K State isn't this good again for another 15 years. I actually saw the ESPN trucks on I-80 near I-39 and thought they might be on their way to Manhattan from East Lansing, but I guess they could have been on their way to LA. Boo!
  19. Everything I've heard about him, is that he's an outstanding in-game manager and a great communicator with the guys. He's knows statistics well but like Maddon will account for those but goes with instinct more. He also "worked" under Cindy Sandberg, possibly driving the final nail in the Ryno/Cubs relationship coffin. As dumb as it sounds, it could preclude Ricketts (and his apparently Ryno love) from hiring him.
  20. I'm pretty sure he'd rip on a white guy if he turned a double into a single by standing and watching it go off the wall. I got into it with him on twitter when that exact thing happened to reed johnson. Five minutes later, he write a critiquing post about the play. Not sure if that was a cya our a legitimate criticism. Overall,.he's a douche, but for some reason, he had pretty good sources, maybe its crane?
  21. I second this. Why should theo have to take responsibility for next years terrible team?
  22. Why is this compensation thing taking so damn long? The Red Sox owners are probably the ones being douches about the whole thing. Maybe they leaked it to the press to drive up compensation? Who knows? Either way, can't they just take $5M and let this [expletive] thing happen?
  23. Money apparently agreed on. 5 years, $15MM. Holy shitballs. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/10/cubs-agree-to-deal-with-theo-epstein.html?utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=twitterfeed
  24. If Theo went this far and backs out for personal reasons, he can [expletive] off. You don't go this far down the road with a job unless you know you are OK moving your family, especially when money is not an issue or consideration. He didn't accept anything, he just interviewed and was offered a position. There is nothing wrong with not taking the position because you grew up in Boston and the Red Sox were the only team you wnted to work for and you decided that you'd rather not move your family. People interview for positions that they don't end up accepting all the time. I actually did this just last week. No one told me to [expletive] off when I declined. Yeah, but I'm sure there were other reasons you declined the job (boss sucked, working conditions were bad, company was not what you wanted, not enough money,etc...) not that you decided you didn't want to move even though you knew exactly where the job was to begin with.
