  1. On espn 1000, Bruce Levine said Rizzo coming up for the weekend series.
  2. I'm OK with that. Overall, though, Ricketts not really looking good on a lot of major issues (Wrigley renovations, the Joe Ricketts thing, this). Fortunately, he hired Theo for the actual on-field product, so there's only so much damage control that needs to be done. It's like Ricketts is the bizarro Tribune Company, which was great at the touchy feely marketing/image stuff and continually put out a bag of horse manure on the field.
  3. I mainly hope he has a solid outing today so the Red Sox, Yankees, and Jays will possibly overpay for him. I'm pretty sure you are both saying the exact same thing. Also, how the heck does Demp get a 3B, did one of the outfielders get shot on a blooper or something? Blooper down the line, Gonzalez ran a long way, dove and missed. He's lucky it hit where the wall as some angle and didn't just roll deeper toward the corner or it would have been a HR. Ha. Glad they are risking a guy with an 8 year $150MM contract at Wrigley during a day game so Big Papi can get some ABs.

  5. Fangraphs' take: they overpaid by $3-$4MM/year, but it won't kill them because they are going to be spending money hand over fist. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/dodgers-overpay-ethier-but-will-it-matter/
  6. I'm not a big Magnifico fan. 100 mph is 100 mph but it's a straight FB. There are other relievers I like more. I'm sorry, but based entirely on name, I want Magnifico. I hope he doesn't even have a first name and just goes by that. This.
  7. Yep. A lot like Ryan Theriot in that respect. Yep. The Cubs handled Theriot pretty well. They got his best years for a relatively low cost. They should have probably non-tendered him or traded him before 2010 as his salary rose from $500k to $2.6 (in the arbitration bitching session he had with Hendry), but overall, the Cubs handled his situation very very well and should follow the same idea with Barney.
  8. If true, that is probably worse. That guy was worthless.
  9. That's awful, too, but I still think Joe Mather is worse. There may have been a give up lineup of Dusty or Lou's that had someone worse, but I'm not sure. There was probably someone worse during the brutal 90s, but who knows.
  10. No, and most things can be attributed to Ricketts. He's cutting payroll! He's letting the Dodgers be the mid-tier but big market team to make the rise to the top (with Ned Colletti)! He's the reason I've watched three seasons of three different shows this week. That's got to total 24 hours, easy. You do realize that Ricketts offered Epstein a virtually open checkbook and he was the one to chose this direction, right? Hmmmm..... Do we know that forsure? Also, Theo, Jed, and Ricketts are responsible for 3 really bad baseball teams this year (Cubs, Padres, Red Sox). Just sayin...
  11. Is this the worst number three hitter in the history of the cubs? Screw you, Jim Hendry, Tom Ricketts,.and anyone else who made this a reality.
  12. As long as it's not Castro, I'm good. Speaking of him, he's on pace for over 100 RBI. Christ.
  13. He pitched one of the greatest games of all time, second all-time in K/9, 10th all-time in H/9, was a key part of some of the best Cubs teams in recent times and was a fan favorite(which I think matters for team honors). Just because he doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame doesn't mean he wasn't an all-time great Cub. If they retire Kerry Wood's number, we will be a further laughingstock. I would say the following people would have a better claim to get their number retired by the Cubs: Sammy Sosa Mark Grace Lee Smith And maybe: Carlos Zambrano Ryan Dempster Aramis Ramirez
  14. Wow! I've wanted Wood to call it a career all season but now that he has, it all seems just sad. Kerry is a pretty good embodiment of the Cubs organization and culture--when it's good (20k game, domination, 2003 playoffs), it's awesome and when it's bad, it's as bad as it gets (injuries, losing, heartbreak, etc.). I hope that somehow, some way, the Cubs are leading after the 8th today vs. the Sox and Sveum lets Kerry try and get the save and he Ks all 3 guys he faces. That would be so awesome.
  15. Pretty hard to ask for public money when you are associated with this group. Another blow to the Cubs. The story: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/17/us/politics/gop-super-pac-weighs-hard-line-attack-on-obama.html The full document: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/05/17/us/politics/17donate-document.html?ref=politics The denial: http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2012/05/17/statement-on-behalf-of-joe-ricketts-on-ricketts-plan/ The fallout: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/16/chicago-cubs-government-spending-wrigley-field_n_784148.html
  16. Kerry Wood just needs to hang it up and start being the Cubs mascot. This is getting embarrassing. What a bad way to go out. Hopefully he can figure it out, but dammit it's frustrating to watch.
  17. Sveum, I like you, but if you make Castro sacrifice bunt again, there are going to be some problems.
  18. Completely agree. His athleticism and arm have made him overall a decent defender. His limited OF experience has also made him look awkward and have several WTF? moments. If he had hit and run like he was supposed to (or paid to?), his defense never would have been an issue here or anywhere.
  19. The combination of small sample size and great positioning by the Cubs coaching staff has led to Soriano being the best defensive player in baseball so far. Awesome. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=1&season=2012&month=0&season1=2012&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&players=0
  20. Here is today's Phil Rogers article. Someone should FJM this article which contains such great nuggets as: Tyler Colvin shouldn't have hustled to get to 3rd and he wouldn't have gotten hit in the chest by that bat. Tyler Colvin is much better than Ian Stewart purely based on the 25 games this season. Theo added David DeJesus for his "professionalism" AJ Pierzynski was solid last year with a .728 OPS AJ Pierzynski is a "solid bet" to have an OPS better than .769 this year Because Posada and Varitek played until they were 39, AJ deserves another contract (Did he not know they sucked the last couple years of those contracts?) Daniel Hudson and Chris Sale are good pitchers because they were married and/or had kids in college. How does this asshat keep his job? http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-your-morning-phil-colvin-ajp-sale-20120502,0,7938811.story
  21. He blatantly flipped his helmet off on that double. What a douche!
  22. Theo looks at Tom Ricketts and just smirks. "Glad you thought it was a good idea to spend your money on an injury prone below average reliever for a 95 loss team, Ameritrade boy".
  23. Herpes. Actually it is some respiratory thing due to the cold last night, so he's just a pansy. The game notes say LuCroy is not playing for the same reason: "chest tightness". Must be the new "flu like symptoms" after boozing it up all night after the game.
  24. Anthem singer sucked. A great omen.
  25. What does it hurt? He gonna cost us going to the playoffs? If rather see a minor leaguer get a sot than watch a broken down former great Cub stumble his way to the end of his career while making a lot of money.
