  1. Freakin' Chinese just went 1-2 in the women's 200 fly. And some fan tossed a miniature drum into the pool, too...
  2. The AL East is the best division in baseball and it isn't remotely close.
  3. Heartily disagree.
  4. Penn State tried to beat that, as their original OOC was Coastal Carolina, Syracuse, Temple and someone like LA Tech. They swapped that last game for Oregon St., but it's still a total joke. A year or two ago their OOC had 3 of the bottom 5 teams in 1-A from the previous year i blame syracuse for being a joke. They're on ND's schedule too and I'm also blaming them.
  5. Judges definitely screwed Johnson. She got I believe a 9.1 execution score and there's no way it should've been less than 9.5 in my opinion. She was wonderful. I don't like this degree of difficulty thing, especially when it devalues some events compared to others (bars were ludicrously important in the women's competition with high difficulty scores, but for some reason USA men destroyed high bar and it seemed insignificant as China blew right past them on a different event with higher start scores).
  6. Trying as hard as I can not to defend Derrek Lee for being DPLee this year, but I've seen him get a giant crap ton of strikes called higher and lower than that. I swear he has the biggest strike zone in terms of actual called strikes in the league.
  7. Dominique Moceanu in Atlanta had years on these girls
  8. I think before Saturday's game they said we were 25 over with Soriano leading off and 1 under when he is not, which given that we split the 2 games since would still hold up. 46-21 with him 25-26 without Wow... not exactly a tiny sample size either... Actually, I just realized, Soriano didn't lead off the first two games and they said we were 44-19 with him leading off, so actually we are 45-22 with him, 26-25 without. Still, pretty pronounced difference.

  10. The 0-2 automatic ball on anything that's not a gopher ball Showboating umps (ROB DRAKE) The Wrigley wind always seemingly helping the other team and not us Web gems for routine plays that guys made look harder (Edmonds aside, David Wright's 'barehand' play comes immediately to mind)
  11. While you're on that topic, the fact that the umps made Rich Hill stop doing his little pause during his windup despite much more blatantly illegal things pitchers do (like the pickoff moves you mentioned) that aren't enforced at all.
  12. It would be a mad house if they erected a video replay board just to show a foul ball call. There are TVs in the upper and lower decks...
  13. Game 2 will be on CSN+ as originally scheduled, for those who don't know.
  14. The fact that very few people know about Pythagorean record bugs me. Oddly enough, more anti-Pythag teams like Arizona in 07 and this year's Angels might actually help increase awareness of that stat. The fact that no national networks show OBP in their broadcasts, except for ESPN in the players' first at-bat, bugs me. This goes back to chemistry from David's first post, but the talk about fights giving teams a spark annoys me severely. The Cubs turned around 2007 by not losing one-run games anymore and having their good hitters remember they were good, not because Lou flipped out. People never mention that it took nearly four weeks from Lou's meltdown to Aramis's walk-off, which is really more around the time the Cubs began playing much better.
  15. Which is one of among many reasons why that stat is a load of crap. Would it really be so hard to create a rule by which relievers who give up game-tying or go-ahead runs would be ineligible to win the game? The scorer can decide who wins like he does in games where starters can't make it 5 innings and their team wins. It'd be so easy to do that it seems a waste not to.
  16. yeah people always talk about duncan, but who's their hitting coach? he turned ryan ludwick into the five best hitters in the game and turned aaron miles and skippy schumaker into good hitters. I'm still waiting to hear what they pulled off with Tony Womack in 2004.
  17. This is an epidemic. In an SI players poll a couple weeks ago asking which rookie has impressed you the most, Soto was first, Longoria second and Volquez third. Just because you change leagues doesn't make you a rookie!
  18. Synchronized diving is made even more boring when the Chinese so predictably dominate everything. US women's gymnastics better kick some ass.
  19. Just like last year, I'm spending most of the year near the cellar. I'm not very good at this.
  20. aren't there rules regarding this? Apparently, she was eligible because she is a Russian citizen (gained while she was playing there) and has never represented the U.S. in international play. I think it's ridiculous, personally. Yeah, Jim Caple insinuates that the only people who can have a problem with this are people hung up on the Cold War. I think it's really odd that somebody can compete for a country simply because they played some pro ball there. I wouldn't expect any of the Russian women to represent the US in tennis, or Lance Armstrong to ride for the French. It's kind of silly if you ask me. It's one thing to be born in one country, and then move to and become a citizen of another country and represent them. And I also don't think it's the same as coaches working for players/teams from another country. i say good for her...the us team didn't want her so she took her game to a place that wanted/needed it....what she did is within the rules so i don't see where the problem is. Seems like the issue people have is with the rule, not Becky Hammon's choice to take advantage of it.
  21. I think it's been beared out that Dave Duncan probably has at least as much to do with the Cardinals' overperforming than La Russa, probably more. TLR seems to have some sort of knack for keeping bad teams afloat, but he's also not a very good in-game manager.
  22. I'm getting tired of seeing people bitching about the Brewers schedule (not that you're bitching, and not that this is directed towards you). Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Cubs and Brewers basically play the same teams the same number of times this year? More or less. The difference is we played more easy teams in the early months and Milwaukee is getting a lot of them at the end. Not convenient.
  23. What about their first opener against Virginia? Sarcasm aside, I have to credit USC for continually playing actual football teams in their non-conference schedule, which is more than can be said for the vast majority of other big-time programs. You ain't kidding. They play the best schedule I've looked at yet. It's even more impressive after I took a second look. They play a Pac-10 schedule (which isn't great but is far from a cakewalk), then they play @Virginia, Ohio State and Notre Dame out of conference. Not one cupcake to be found (obvious joke about ND being a cupcake inserted here).

  25. Only after the coaches had to promise that none of the gymnasts would get hurt during their training. Al Trautwig said on the air at one point that any Chinese that had TV's on in the country were watching that event...I wondered aloud if that was because the government ordered them to.
