I think the Heisman 'curse' has more to do with the Heisman continually going to players that everyone knows aren't going to be worth a [expletive] in the NFL than anything. It's not like Smith, White, Weinke, Crouch, etc. were drafted high and had bad things happen to them, they just plain aren't NFL players. FWIW, I don't think the same thing will happen to Mark Ingram, who looks like he could be a solid NFL back.

This has been a really crappy weekend for the entire conference. Think CBS wants a 'flex' option for that craptastic UCLA/ND game they are airing next Saturday afternoon?

Does Dallas really have THAT many more fans than every other team that they have to be on essentially national TV every week? I know they probably have the most fans of any NFL team but I never got the impression that it was that big a difference.

The Panthers rough the punter on their very last chance to get into the game, a poorly-run defensive play turns a 52-yard FG into a 47-yard one later, and now it's 20-10. Time to start calling Bill Cowher, because mistakes like this are inexcusable and they happen to Carolina every week. The Panthers have never had back to back winning seasons.

New England going 96 yards for a touchdown on that drive was basically preordained.

Our I-Bowl was Jan. 5th so we didn't get to do the New Year's Eve thing. Have fun up there - Toronto is so awesome.

You may not like divisions, but the Big Ten will need them if they want a championship game. What do you call the conference then? I like "Big Tweleven".

I still think that school that OMC mentions as being the best option. They're in the Big East in all other sports. I really don't see that happening.

Marquette?? They have no football team, and the only reason for the Big Ten to chase a 12th team is to have a football title game. No way.

Two of my friends and I had a lengthy back and forth (and back...) on Twitter today and one of them brought up Syracuse and Rutgers as possibilities too - for the NYC money. Missouri is a team that is sometimes floated for the Big Ten too but I doubt they'd ever leave the Big 12. And as for the Notre Dame issue - the Big Ten themselves said they would never again pursue Notre Dame after the Irish declined membership in 1999. For whatever that's worth.

Harbaugh would be an excellent, excellent hire for KU. And Jones would be a good hire for Cincy, though I get the impression if he left CMU would have to consider a "no-Cincinnati" clause in the next guy's contract.

Well, after watching the press conference, I'm more on board than I was before. Very savvy, smart, self-effacing guy. Confident but not Weis-ian. And committed to player development. Couldn't have been more pleased with his response to his impressions of the team he's inheriting: "Does it matter?"

Honestly it is probably the best ND could do. With the apparent failure of the Stoops talks and the obvious lack of interest from Meyer or any of the other biggies, I have a hard time disagreeing. He won't coach the bowl game, so it's right to work for Kelly. I hope for big things.

Cincinnati has abruptly closed off their banquet to the media amidst reports that Kelly has called a closed-door meeting with his team before the banquet. Edsall may or may not be a good coach if he were hired - he certainly has good qualities - but the fact of the matter is that he's .500 in his coaching career, which is a pretty glaring number at a school whose athletic director claims to be aiming to compete at the highest level. I doubt he's a serious candidate.

So I'm thinking maybe Pitt isn't just going to finish in the top 4 in the Big East like it's their birthright as they've done in recent years. Resoundingly impressive win for IU.

It is enough IMO. This year is an extreme anomaly with five unbeatens at the end of the year and even then there is one unbeaten that is generally agreed to be a notch below the others (Boise). There would definitely be controversy in picking the last team or last two teams in with the 4-team playoff, but for the most part I can't envision someone having a legitimate gripe with being left out.

W/E. All I know this constant complaining and whinning about the lack of a playoff system is beyong annoying. Until the viewership drops, and the BCS/NCAA, etc, etc,etc begins to lose money, then the playoff system will never be given anything more then a token topic to talk about it. And I am fine with it. So all this debate is pretty much moot. OK...just scrap the whole thing then. Go back to what they did before the BCS. Honestly, I think that would be better than what they do now. The NCAA should not endorse a system that gives someone a "National Title" and then not have in place a system that is equal and fair to everyone. The only equal and fair solution would be a playoff. Television dollars would never allow it (competing for eyes on New Year's), but I would completely be in favor of going back to the old system if a 4-team playoff were truly never going to be an option. I can only imagine how cool it was when basically all the big bowls were on New Year's Day. There still wouldn't be a clear answer, but at least it would be fun. The only thing that I'd change in that scenario would be the once-common practice of teams accepting major bowl bids well before the season ends, which led to more than one bowl matchup that was intriguing at the time but looked a lot different after one of the teams went belly up at the end of the season.
