  1. No, thats the advice that McGwire gave to a young Giambi. Not the advice Maddux gave to a young Marshall.
  2. I'm telling you, the Cubs (in addition to new contracts for Wood, Z, Miller, Pierre and ARAM) are going to sign Steve Trachsel and Cliff Floyd, two veterans who know how to win. What's the expression? Oh, yes....book it.
  3. I remember this was a big deal in the mid 1990's with Randy Myers when the Cubs' clubhouse went dry. So, I guess the Cubs have done this in the past.
  4. Thats what I'm rooting for...embarassment and overhaul. Sadly, I don't think anyone involved in this team feels any sense of shame except for Zambrano who's pissed off he isn't invulnerable.
  5. That has nothing to do with the protest, it's an Oriole fan tradition to emphasize the O in the anthem. And its still lame. WNST has done these things before. They usually reserve buyout the tickets in the part of the park farthest from the action (upper deck, right field line). They usually get 50-100 poor people/college kids to show up.
  6. And here I agree with biittner77 - if you do the math the Cubs' record against teams with .500 or better its 22-37 (including last night's game and not including the Marlins), which is roughly winning 36% of your games. Not too far off their percentage against "bad" teams either. What I think it comes down to is the Cubs have streaky players surrounded by garbage. When ARAM and the French Outfielders are hot, the Cubs are pretty good regardless of who they're playing. When they're not, the opposite is true.
  7. Frank Castillo. Ricky Gutierrez also played some for the 04 Sox, though I don't know if he was on the post-season roster. Neither was. Gutz was only around when Nomar was hurt. Even in 2004 the best thing about Frank was his ability to pick a great looking wife.
  8. Terry Adams was on the team for awhile, but I think Royko's "theory" said they had to be on the postseason roster. Adams wasn't.
  9. I just thought it was funny, I don't really think about Neifi that much, but I do read Kaufman everyday. Yeah, I put a quote from the column in my sig, but it replaced a quote from Sosa. I guess I'm just fixated on the past. Speaking of the past, this guy was really bad too: http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/ramosdo01.shtml
  10. I agree....with the opinion that Mark gets all the time he needs to recover from pitcher abuse. Hopefully he'll be back next year and Z isn't messed up by the end of this year and the Cubs' have a pair of aces along with Marshall and Hill to anchor the rotation along with Misc. Veteran Inning Eater.
  11. I've got an amazing hint to help you avoid threads that bother you so much, don't read ones with the word "Neifi" in the title. It'll help.
  12. Sully talks about how the Dodgers are trying to win a WS despite having three or more ex-Cubs on the rostor. I sent him a note, because the Ex-Cubs factor is over. In 2001 the D-Backs won the series with Grace, Gonzo and Morgan (and I think Miguel Batista). There's enough curse mumbo-jumbo going around with bringing up ones that are already broken.
  13. But he still plays baseball, correct?
  14. http://salon.com/sports/col/kaufman/2006/09/14/thursday/index1.html In May, the Cubs were 2-18 when Perez played, but they were 5-4 -- they were a winning team! -- when he stayed in the dugout. That is a colossal Neifi Index of .446. To give you some context, the difference between the winning percentages of the best and worst teams in baseball, the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals, is .227. And Neifi Perez, one guy, made almost twice that difference for the Cubs! And don't talk to me about small sample size. You don't need large sample sizes to know about the Neifi Effect.
  15. Look out for other big-market teams. The Mets and Dodgers have plenty of transplant fans in the area. Not enough that you see them all the time, but enough to snatch up any tickets that aren't bought by the faithful.
  16. No mention of the Manning Bowl? I think that game is going to be a lot of fun to watch, and of course a million fantasy football junkies will be tooned in because Eli went early (although not as early as Peyton who was a top seven pick) in every draft I saw.
  17. Likes: Sometimes they wear these really cool blue jerseys! Team has slipped into "funny bad" quality of play Neifi is helping to take down a team besides the one for which I root The retro Dawson and Sandberg jerseys I wear to games to avoid ridicule Saving money on my annual Cubs' road trip the last two years (and counting) WHY NOT DUSTY Dislikes: 1909-present The lineup Our best signings for the last two years are middle relievers 2006 NL Comeback Player of the Year? Nomar Garciaparra 2007 NL Comeback Player of the Year? Astros Closer Kerry Wood I would rather have Randy Myers closing games then taking another Dempster Dive in the 9th The writers of the two largest Chicago newspapers That my wife, the lifelong Mets' fan, can't be more supportive in these dark times.
  18. Do you really think the Cubs can sweep the next two games? Two games in a row? A win today would be a blip. The Baby Bears will be back where they belong.
  19. I'd like to take a second to thank everyone who made this possible: Jake, you're tireless devotion to the Pirates is astounding. You deserve this second to last place team as much as we deserve this last place team. Balsa, Bruno, BigB...thanks for contributing to the thread. You're my killer B's. Lets not forget some of the earlier contributers: The San Diego Padres for double sweeping the Cubs earlier, The Atlanta Braves for that Memorial Day weekend sweep and of course everyone on our interleague schedule. Thank you all, its been a blast. Hopefully we won't have to do this again next year.
  20. As a Penn State fan, I'm really looking forward to this weekend's game. JoePa vs Holtz was a fun rivalry until State bolted for the Big 10.
  21. I thought the best part of the interview was when he said "a bunch of players went down but we should have played better" in other words, his players were the ones that let everyone down or the manager. But he put together a great team. Stupid players not having career years.
  22. I'm not sure which sarcastic joke to make right now... "Stupid fans hurting Zambrano with their racism" or "Too bad there was no way to know this could happen to a pitcher" or "Stupid goat hurting the Cubs with its magic curse" So many unreal excuses to choose from.
  23. I think the would/should is crucial to these arguments. Last week when I posted that the Cubs are going to sign Pierre, Trachsel and Floyd to multi-year 8 digit contracts (while letting Aramis walk) I was only partially kidding. These are the kind of players that Hendry likes and will get. A guy thats fast, a veteran innings-eater that knows how to win, and a relatively cheap power guy who might give "lightning in a bottle" or might play 30 games and bat .220 . I think all of these guys were all-stars once, and the Cubs will sign them assuming they will be again. Do I think this is the path the Cubs should take? Hell no. That being said, if I was told the Cubs would blow the team up or do what I just typed above; I would bet on JP, Trax and Floyd playing 81 games in Wrigley next year. (combined)
  24. I think the best chance a team in the NL has to beat the Mets is in a five game series. If your goal is a WS, you're best bet is to get the Mets early and get them out. Of course, all of that is contingent on Pedro and Glavine. Mets aren't going to the WS with El Duque, Trachsel and John Maine heading their rotation.
