    If the outfield spots weren't filled, I'd love to kick the tires on Scott or Hermida. I just don't see how either would be worthwhile in our current (expensive) outfield situation.

    I'm confused as to how that's possible, unless it's over the last three seasons. Cubs.com and Baseball Reference both have Hill appearing in a total of 44 games this year.

    1. I was ranking non-coastal cities. San Francisco is world class and that's reflected by the fact that a cardboard box under a highway overpass still sells there for $450,000. 2. Austin is kick ass, but the summers are sheer hell. After a month straight of 90+ degrees and humidity you'll be changing your tune. Plus it's still in Texas (barely). I hate going to Texas and being reminded every 5 minutes about how they used to be their own country and how great the state is. And Austin has no major sports teams. But to make up for it there's tons of cute women all over the place. 1. Ah, sorry. Retracted. 2. Agree completely about the annoying Texas-hubris (I sometimes have to wonder if it's intentional satire for out-of-staters, it's just so over-the-top as to be almost unbelievable), lack of major pro sports, and the abundance of cute women. I have not been there in the dead of summer, however.

    1. San Francisco is a city. 2. I cannot believe two people ranked St. Louis ahead of Austin and no one called them out. Austin is about a gazillion times better than St. Louis. Austin is truly outstanding; and I'm no fan of Texas.

    Howry threws strikes. Easily hittable strikes, but strikes nonetheless. Heilman walks everybody, yet Lou hasn't lost confidence in him for some reason. It is rather anomalous. Lou seems to have a deep-seated aversion to walking people -- especially from relievers -- yet Heilman is evidently exempted.

    opening day payrolls are not a great way to measure how efficiently a GM uses the resources available to him. If he trades a guy away but eats the salary, or if he cuts a guy, that doesn't count toward opening day payroll, but it certainly counts in the money wasted department. The Cubs have eaten a significant amount of money in two of those seasons. 2005 and 2009. The other 4 seasons they released no more than a couple million worth of players at most. I'm not sure about the Cardinals and their money management during that time. It also doesn't take into account contracts taken on via trade during the season. Regardless, anybody trying to argue that Hendry has not had a huge financial advantage over his rivals just is not paying attention, or they are blatantly lying. Being in a virtual tie with a team that you're outspending by $46 million dollars is inexcusable -- at least excepting anomalies like the Rays loaded with pre-arbitration, top-tier draft picks (of which the Cardinals aren't). Hendry is the prodigal GM.

    He wants to see him not screw up for a period of time being that he has only been free for a couple of days. Vick can thank players like Adam Jones for this kind of treatment. I agree this is the Pacman Jones treatment...but Leonard Little/Stallworth/Ray Lewis killed people! Every team has a roster fill of guys who have beat their wives or done things worse than Vick. Don't get me wrong, Vick isn't a good guy and not one you'd want your daughter to spend time with. But it's disgusting that groups like PETA have warped society to put more value in a dogs life than a humans. He's paid his debt, reinstate him unconditionally. Dog fighting is premeditated organized crime. It's not as simple as saying humans > dogs.

    At the time, there were rumors the Pacers wanted to trade up in the draft to get Ben Gordon. I was very, very high on him and hoped that would happen. To this day, I'm still unsure if I was correct in how good he would be. On Deng, I really don't think many people besides Bulls fans thought he would ever be much more than the 18/8 guy he was once.
