  1. How about making this a Winter Meetings Prediction thread for the Cubs? I'll say we trade Soriano and 42 mill to Oakland for Dallas Braden. I think we'll sign Jorge Soler to a 5 year 17.5 mill contract. And we'll finish off the meetings by signing Prince Fielder to a 7 year 161 mill deal with an 8th year vesting option at 23 mill. My predictions on compensation for Theo is Michael Flaherty and Jeffry Antigua. My prediction for Jed and Jason's comp is Larry Suarez. Hottest trade rumor that doesn't get done is Garza for Hughes/Banuelos/Murphy.
  2. I certainly see why Theo would move slowly on Stewart, if he is. He could get non tendered soon. And if he did, no team is going to give him more than the 3mill or so, he's likely to get thru arbitration. I think it's great we're concerned with every single cent we spend. If we wait this out and can sign him for a mill or so less than if we traded for him, then great. Plus, it could possibly save us a prospect we could use in another deal. Not to mention, if we think Headley or someone else not on our radar is going to be able to be had reasonably, then we're not closing ourselves in too quickly with someone who definitely is a question mark, even if he does have potential to be solid. If he winds up as our 3rd baseman next year, I'm perfectly fine with it, but exhausting all other options before committing to him is the right thing to do.
  3. Kuroda is supposedly "wide open" now as to where he'll pitch next year. I think he'd be a great fit on a one year deal. If we build for the future moreso than go crazy this offseason spending, an addition of Fielder and him would still give us a shot at competing in 2012 possibly.
  4. I think Soler definitely goes to the minors. No question whatsoever there. But he would hopefully give us an impact hitter in a system without a ton of impact players at the moment(although lower levels obviously look promising). I can see Byrd becoming a 4th OFer, but I think it's more likely he starts than Soriano, if we DID sign Cespedes. Who, I'm guessing anyway, would start the season off in the majors. But, even that's not a guarantee. Bottom line for me though, is I'm really starting to think Soler is our guy, not Cespedes.
  5. I fully expect the Marlins to wind up with Reyes and one of Wilson, Jackson, or Buehrle.
  6. I get the feeling this is a backup plan if we miss out on Fielder. I think Soler is much more likely to be a Cub. That said, if Soriano gets dealt next week, all bets are off.
  7. Rosenthal giving Heyman a run for best non informator of the year......Tweets Darvish is LIKELY to be posted after Winter Meetings. Citing a "source". EDIT: And follows with saying this is NOT 100%. Still working through some things with his club. Divorce is NOT a factor.
  8. Kevin Goldstein answered a tweet of mine about Soler. I asked whether he has immunity from new IFA rules until January 1st and he said he does. Until July actually. So, he's not screwed and I hope we give him whatever it takes. On a side note, I guess this rule appilies to other IFA as well. For what it's worth, there are still some high profile Dominicans from last July 2nd signing period yet to be signed as well. Could be our last shot at beefing the system up before the new rules take affect. I hope we make a couple of splashes, if this includes those guys as well, and I see no reason why it wouldn't.
  9. I'd say he's just a guy for now. But like anything else the braintrust approves of, I'm optimistic at least.
  10. I've always hated Counsell too. But I hope we hire him. Because if someone with that little talent can hang around in the majors as long as he did, he's got to know a hell of a lot. I'll bet he's going to be a damn good coach.
  11. one should never apologize for that Great movie. By the way, Bosio is our pitching coach, according to chicagocubsonline. Quotes in the article from Bosio appear that it's true as well. Probably not an official announcement til next week. Counsell in the mix for a job as well.
  12. Yeah, I feel much better that Stewart, rather than Colvin, could help us out next season. Beyond as well. Unless the thinking is Headley can be had without even giving up Szczur or McNutt, go ahead and get this thing done.
  13. Kuroda would be an excellent one or two year option. But, as has been mentioned, he's probably headed back to Japan now. I guess I could see him staying somewhere within the state of California, since it's also been reported he'd consider teams on either coast. Still, does nothing at all for the Cubs though.
  14. It's a game. Theo probably prefers Headley. But, at some point, how much is he going to cost in return becomes a huge factor. So, he holds off the Rockies until he gets to the bottom of what it's going to take on Headley. If Stewart gets dealt before Theo decides whether Headley is worth it or not, then Theo kind of loses the game here. But, he probably has a 3rd option anyway, so it's not really all that bothersome. What about Betemit on a one year deal? Is he THAT awful?
  15. I'd put Soler 1st on that list, based on everything Theo has said. Then Fielder, Cespedes, and Pujols in that order.
  16. Wow. I thought this was a joke. Yes. Do it, please. And that's coming from a guy who'd rather have Headley as well.
  17. Goldstein says Yanks, Rangers, and Phils in that order, as the 3 favorites to sign him. Mike Rizzo said he expects Soler to receive a contract larger than Leonys Martin. Which obviously confuses me, since he's 19. Does this IFA limited spending thing start immediately or not?
  18. The last I read was that he was expected to file on December 1st.
  19. He did. I should have clarified. I meant Wei- yin Chen, the Taiwanese lefty coming over this year. He's 26 and is evidently wanting a 4 year deal for around 16 mill.
  20. I'm not a fan of paying out big money for closers, especially older ones. That said, Bell for 3/27 seems like a much better option than 4/50 on Papelbon at least.
  21. Unfortunately, it's appearing like we actually have interest in this guy. Heyman had predicted 2 years and 9 mill for him. To me, that's insane for him. Although I have seen blurbs where he's definitely wanting 2 guaranteed years. He IS a lefty, something we want and probably need. Sveum and Bosio(assuming he's our next pitching coach) already know the guy well. Maybe they want a short term back of the rotation guy? Makes sense, but I know I'd much rather have Bedard. Hell, he has serious upside, at least compared to Capuano. Why not Maholm? Or especially Chen, even if he does want 4 years. I guess I understand the whole "we already know this guy" approach, but isn't Capuano a guy you should expect to get for a million or so at the tail end of the offseason? The Sun Times mentioned this and Ace did as well, so I'm preparing myself for this one.
  22. Really solid list, but I'd have McCutchen lower as well. I can see where Castro being ranked behind the other 4 makes sense, but I may would have him over Posey. Upton, Stanton, and Kershaw would definitely stay ahead of him. On the other hand, seeing this list made me think of who of these guys or possibly what pairing of this group could we get for Garza.
  23. Brewers offered 6 years and 120 mill. More than I thought they'd do anyway. I think the Nats are going to wind up being our main competitors for him.
  24. This move MAYBE indicates Brett doesn't start next season in the majors or it could mean Brett is trade bait. Or it could mean nothing at all. But it's a solid signing and evidently part of the big plan.
  25. Nah, I don't think so. He's a CFer who can also play the corners. Brett is the same way, so I think we're fine, on that front. Most rumors have had us more interested in Soler anyway though. By the way, 2 years and 10 mill, with a team option is solid value for DeJesus. Good job, first move out of the way.......
