  1. Excellent read, even if we've probably got our top 20's looking quite a bit different than he has his. Surprised Wells and Rhee, maybe even Antigua didn't make his list. Especially since he went the upside route quite a bit otherwise. I think I'm starting to get influenced some on all these reports on Castillo. If he has more trade value than I thought, it's probably a great time to deal him. I think the idea of Maples starting in full season ball next year is very ambitious personally. But I probably shouldn't let a few Instructs innings influence me all that much either. And I too, can't for the life of me figure out what the "cheating for power" line meant either on Flaherty.
  2. If Soler is screwed and is definitely coming over, here's how I hope the Cubs look at this opportunity: If Soler is this talented, to where he was going to get 15 mill or so, now he's only going to get 2.9 mill max under the new rules. I'd give him all of our IFA money, maybe even an extra 100,000 or so, since there is no penalty for that. Then, I'd take the penalty and STILL spend the 2.9 mill on other guys as well. Yeah, you're going to pay double, because of the tax. But, if you were going to do it anyway just on Soler anyway, why not take the penalty so you can add more talent as well? If you spend 6 mill total, you'll get taxed an extra 6 as well, so you're spending 12 altogether. Which is still less than you may have given Soler by himself. The only real downside here is you'd be penalized by not being able to spend more than 250,000 on any player for the following season. That said, you could take the quantity over quality approach for that year, while spending big on a few impact guys this year. If this kid is the real deal, I hope this is the way the Cubs look at it.
  3. As long as Pena doesn't accept, Cubs will have 4 of the top 60ish or so picks in the draft.
  4. If we dont get any compensation for Type Bs anymore what would be the point? This year there still is compensation for B's. I'm guessing it's still after the 1st round and the Type A comp picks, but there still is compensation for this last time. At least I'm almost sure there is, right?
  5. Well, I'm the opposite as I've already said a prayer asking that he does NOT accept. Maybe we have an agreement in place with him so he won't.
  6. If the Marlins offered Logan Morrison straight up for Garza and it's up to you, what would you do?
  7. According to Heyman, slot for the 6th pick is 3.2.
  8. Chen and the Royals are progressing towards a deal. Chen wants 2 years and over 10 mill.
  9. It's high, but it's came down 3 straight years. If he can get it down to the 3.5ish per 9 range, he could be elite.
  10. I don't see the Yankees and Red Sox being heavily involved here, so I don't think the posting fee goes over 40 mill personally. But, it's not like he's definitely even coming anyway. Part of me thinks he wants to wait until those teams WILL be more involved. I've got a feeling he's staying put this offseason.
  11. Figure this is as good of a place as any to put this, but today's the arb deadline for Type A and B FA's. Will we offer arbitration to Ramirez, Pena, and Wood? I'm figuring we do to Aramis, since he's going to be getting a 3 or 4 year deal somewhere and he's closed the book on us, so it's safe on him. Wood? No idea honestly, because I kind of expect a 2 year deal to be announced soon on him. But I guess we'll offer arb anyway. The question mark is Pena? Do we take a chance and offer it? Personally, I'm worried he'll accept and leave us with a guy we don't want back. I guess a team MAY would give him a 2 year deal, but I don't think that's a guarantee. It'd be nice to get another pick, but I won't be surprised if we stay away from offering him either.
  12. This kind of makes me sad. I wanted us to get him, especially at that kind of a deal. Of course, he is VERY risky, but not as much as giving bigtime money to Cespedes, even though I want him on our team too.
  13. I think I would trade Soto straight up for Conger personally. Because I'm starting to believe Castillo has solid value as well and could be dealt in a package for another need, maybe filling 3rd base.
  14. Actually, I think teams that win the 10 lottery picks have the ability to trade them. But, I think there's something to the effect that teams acquiring them only receive 50% of the added value to their draft allotment. Something like that anyway.
  15. Yeah, he'd be much better off staying in Cuba until he's 23. But since he's already in the Dominican, I'm not sure he can stop the process at this point. My guess is we'll be hearing quite a bit more on his situation over the next couple of days.
  16. I kind of like it. But I don't think that's enough to get Gio. Not if they were wanting Stanton or Morrison from Florida. Maybe add McNutt in there? I guess it's putting a lot of faith in Szczur, in a way. I'd much rather trade him than Brett personally. In fact, if it took Szczur, McNutt, Lake, and Struck, I'd still do it.
  17. A guy on Twitter already found a solid loophole and Callis thinks it's interesting. Don't sign your 1st rounder, spend more money on your other picks and then receive the extra 1st the following year, plus a larger budget to work with as well.
  18. That's not a bad package talent-wise, but honestly, I don't want a 1B prospect. I'd like to get a Conger or a Mesoraco, but I'd much rather target pitching than a 1B.
  19. Slots for the top 4 picks are 7.2, 6.2, 5.2, and 4.2 mill. My guess is the 6th pick will be 3.4.
  20. Allright, but with the amount of money we've got coming off the books between now and the 2013 season, we can add 2 bigtime bats and 2 front of the rotation types. Add that grouping with Castro, Garza, Soto and probably Brett Jackson and Cashner and you've got an excellent core group. Not to mention, Theo will almost assuredly make a couple of trades as well that net us some very solid younger guys that are contributors at that time as well. Seems like a lot of work to do obviously, but we have the ability and the means to do it. And what's on the market now and next offseason almost makes a Fielder or even Pujols a "must get" if you ask me. Is this too much for you to think can happen over that time frame? Because monetarily, it can certainly work.
  21. If we're going to shop Marmol and Soto together, I'd take Conger, Segura, and Richards for them. They like Walden though, don't they? Why would they be wanting Marmol? Is Walden hurt or something?
  22. Dave, given how much money the Cubs have to spend between now and next offseason, it would appear to me that with a group of moves made solely to add impact players, the Cubs would have an excellent 3 or 4 year window, where they're an elite team with an excellent shot at winning it all. I understand Pujols would be signed for another 4 years or so past then, but doesn't getting his elite production during a period where the team is also elite make him worth more than you're equating, for that factor alone. To me, if we could steal one title during his 4 or 5 year window, the rest of his contract becomes worth it, by default. Keep in mind, I'm actually more for signing Prince than Pujols, by the way. Just wonder when you're thinking we'll have a true"window" and if that makes paying up for a difference maker more OK in your eyes.
  23. Yeah, was chatting while all the details were being released. I guess we're lucky Bud didn't include them in the IFA budget as well, since he thinks baseball is doing so great and all.
  24. Players that are posted from the Pac Rim or Cubans 23 or older with 3 years of professional experience are excluded from the IFA budgets from teams.
