  1. If things work out right, Baez or Soler could either one, or both, be a top 25 type guy next year. Szczur wasn't mentioned, but is fairly likely to be a top 100 guy. Vitters and Lake are wild cards obviously, that could potentially work themselves into the top 100ish area . I'm not mentioning Brett, because in the end, I expect him to lose his rookie status before the end of the season. However, along with Baez and Szczur(hopefully Soler), you've got the 6th pick moving into the top 100, probably 50, possibly even higher. You also have the 43, 56, 67, and 101 picks out there, that I'll be shocked if we don't get at least one more 1st round talent that fell for whatever reasons. Plus, as we're going over in a different thread, you have Dempster and Garza returns to possibly factor in. Not to mention, we're absolutely stacked in Boise this year and it wouldn't surprise me in the least to get someone from there put onto the national scene either. If we sign Soler and trade Demp and Garza, there's no doubt in my mind that we're a top 7-10 system heading into next season.
  2. Tim is big on Vitters because of the age/level, not big on Brett because of the K's. My guess is this board is probably split fairly close, between choosing one or the other honestly. I'm a Brett guy, but I hope I'm wrong and both of these guys are longtime starters for us. I'll say this at least: It seems much more plausible to me today, than it did last month at this time.
  3. I don't see a glut at all. Maybe Wandy Rodriguez? I don't see Greinke and Marcum being available personally. And even if they are, teams vying for the postseason are going to wonder the exact same thing we do with Greinke anyway. Can he hold up in a big market? Garza's the best possible guy out there, unless the M's decide to float Felix, which again, I doubt.
  4. Best case scenario for us: Trade Dempster extremely soon, before his numbers start to look pedestrian. Land a return of a guy that slots into our own top 10 prospects and 2 more that slot into our top 30. KG said we'd easily be able to get a top 10 organizational guy for him, so get it done ASAP. Wait out Garza until much closer to the deadline, giving him time to pitch better than he has so far. Use the AL East against each other, throw your best offer out to him on an extension(must not be as easy as 5/80ish or it'd probably be done already), if he declines, take the best offer. Probably 2 top 100 guys and 2 more guys we can again slot into the back end of our top 30.
  5. I'll disagree on that one, but I'm a big fan of Brett. I honestly think he's a 3 to 4 WAR guy for us. I'm still not going to be even remotely sold on Vitters until he keeps this up for a full season, instead of a month long Soriano-like streak.
  6. Assuming health, I think he's almost a definite 3/4. You disagree?
  7. I think Appel has a pretty high floor. I think all 3 have bigtime ceilings obviously. For some reason though, I'm kind of finding myself hoping for Fried today. Of course, that'll change tomorrow, I'm sure. There's 8 guys out there I'm perfectly fine with at 6. I am thinking at this point, Correa is the biggest upside guy in the draft. But I can't see him lasting to us either.
  8. Wow. Not sold on ANY of the pitching?
  9. Nope. But we're having a hell of a day out of Brett and Vitters. McNutt and Jensen pitched well, Torreyes broke out, Baez had a couple of hits, so did Lake. Good day all around.
  10. Baez went 2-5 tonight and Jensen went 5.2, 3 hits, 2 unearned runs, 2walks and 3 strikeouts.
  11. Torreyes now 4-4, busted the Mendoza line.
  12. Tough ass decision. I think I'd leave him in.
  13. Torreyes is 3-3 with 2 doubles.
  14. I'd like to hear a report of how his velo is holding up. I tend to look at him as a bullpen guy, but if he can get his arm strength built up and stay healthy, it's worth giving him a long look. I don't like the lack of K's but this has to be his most economical outing of the year easily.
  15. 6IP 4H 1R 1ER 2BB 2K on 79 pitches for McNutt tonight.
  16. Doing what? Floating Almora's name.
  17. CubsDen is reporting Demp IS willing to accept a trade. Goldstein thinks Cubs can easily get an organizational top 10 prospect in a deal for him. Knobler, at Cbssports speculates Dodgers could be interested in him, evidently they preferred him to Lilly 2 summers ago, but Hendry pulled him back.
  18. Not sure what the advantage would be to doing it, but Piliere suggested we're doing it possibly because we don't see Correa being there.
  19. B2b: I know you're not well versed in minor league systems, but if you looked up all the talent, up and down each of the 30 organizations at the turn of this baseball calendar year, the Cubs had less talent top to bottom than just about everyone. The Astros, Mets, and Twins were in worse shape for sure. May have been another team or two. Is that acceptable for a team with the Cubs resources? The reason Theo took this gig is because there's no excuse NOT to build a longterm contender here with the resources available. what he inherited was a true mess. If you actually think otherwise, you're not looking at things clearly.
  20. I trust our guys. If they're sold on Almora, then I'll be happy to get him. They must see Beltran if they actually think that highly of him. That said, I do think it's a smokescreen.
  21. I thought Sanchez is iffy to stick behind the plate? On a side note, getting the Red Sox to part with Barnes and Bradley would be excellent.
  22. DFAd relievers aren't going to be longterm pieces. When you "hit" on one of them it's for the short-term. I certainly don't care enough to look that type of thing up, but this Asencio guy, for instance, hasput up excellent numbers in AAA, isn't very old, and has years of control left. Not saying he'll pan out, but it's conceivable he could become a legit bullpen piece for 3-4 years.
  23. It's an audition process this year. If signing all these DFA's result in one longterm piece for us, even as a reliever or bench guy, it's totally worth it. Glad they're so active.
  24. Who knows? But Marlin, the real PSD insider just said that if that's how the top 5 goes, he does see the Cubs taking Almora, although Correa was very impressive at Wrigley a few days ago. No one thinks he's sticking at SS. He also said, from everything he's heard is that Appel/Buxton go 1-2 in some order.
