  1. My thinking is Stewart quits hitting as well as he has been, but gets much luckier and his numbers get better anyway.
  2. If I'm Houston, I'm offering Appel, Buxton, and Gausman 6 mill, Correa 5 mill and Zunino 4 mill and see which one accepts first. It'd give them lots of money to overslot later on. I just don't see where giving any of those guys the full slot makes sense for them. They could probably get one of this group and a couple of other top 30ish talents as well that drop for signability reasons.
  3. I'm pissed. They told me last week I was their new closer, but they took it away from me before I got a shot.
  4. What happens if he is hurt, but all he needs is TJ? Then as common as TJS has become, I still think it's too risky for us to blow the 6th pick on him with this CBA. If we weren't capped financially, I think we'd take him and not think twice.
  5. I guess everything we're thinking right now hinges on whether or not Giolito throws off a mound this week and how he looks, if he does. I honestly can't see a team ahead of us taking the risk. But if he looks good, I think we'll pull the trigger.
  6. Reed almost took a coaching job over the offseason. I honestly think the reason he's here is to mentor guys like Campana, Sappelt, and Brett. Reed is probably a guy they can learn a lot from. Not from a playing standpoint as much as the general work ethic stuff. Yes, there's a debate as to whether it's worth having a player around for this, but that's the feeling I get as to why he's here this season.
  7. Maybe a family emergency? I hope not, but if he's not hurt and he's not getting called up, I can't think of anything else.
  8. By the way, a product of the new CBA says we have to offer at least 40% of slot value to a player. This sets the bar, I suppose, for what college seniors should be expecting.
  9. Gammons says Astros were blown away by Correa's personal workout. If he goes 1st, all bets are off as far as who's sitting there at 6 for us.
  10. Damnit. Oh well, Marco should be fine. Sucks he's being sent down now that he's playing well though.
  11. Theo and Co got a late start to the offseason. Knew very little about our employees, so they decided to stick a toe in the water, instead of jumping in. I understand it, even if I thought they could make us decent quickly and figure out how to sustain it from there. No groundbreaking moves whatsoever, unless Rizzo becomes one. But if we had signed Pujols, Fielder, or even Cespedes, how would we be looking right now? Harza wasn't dealt, in part to see whether we're close enough to contend with him. Granted, he's trying to screw himself out of an extension and us out of maxing out his trade value right now, but he's probably got 8-9 starts left to change that before the deadline. We missed on Darvish, but we don't know by how much. I just want Castro to get a little plate discipline, LaHair to break out of his slump, Garza to turn it back around, and Shark to keep it up. Trade Demp, lets see what Rizzo can do and hopefully Brett later on too. The more games we lose, the better, if those things happen. Oh, and get Soler under contract somehow before zjuly 2nd. We lose 110 and do that? I'm fine with things.
  12. Keith Law says Onelki Garcia has told teams he wants 7 mill and if he's not a 1st rounder, he won't sign. I'd say this guy is a wee bit delusional, to put it nicely.
  13. Honest question: Can we even go 48-67 to finish off the season and avoid 100 losses?
  14. My honest worry is this throwing to first crap goes further than that with him.
  15. In his case, because of his daughter. He may not want to uproot his family more than once. It could come down to negotiating an extension possibly before he's traded.
  16. It's going to suck if he's the odd man out with Baez coming. DeVoss has 2nd most likely. Maybe Darvill gets the hook. His offensive line isn't special obviously, but I noticed tonight he already has NINETEEN errors. Holy [expletive].
  17. Yes, I can't disprove the thing you can't prove, therefore it's possible they paid a guy 6 million to eventually sign his friend. Was that 6 million one lump sum to be paid this year and count towards ML payroll? I'm too tired to look up his contract. Can't hang with you CST zoners. I'm pretty sure he got a 3 mill bonus and has 3 mill spread out over 6 years. Not 100% on this though.
  18. I have no clue whether what I'm saying is FACT. Neither do you. I said it's been in the back of my mind since the signing. We supposedly reached an agreement(or may still have one, for all I know) with Soler. With a low payroll and the need to add an impact player, it's certainly conceivable we overpaid Concepcion, to get him in tow, to get Soler to agree quickly as well. Instead of having other teams possibly drive Soler's price up later on. But in the last uncapped year, I definitely see this FO doing whatever it takes to add as much young talent as possible. Overpaying, if it has to.
  19. Look man, this is the last year of being able to sign IFA uncapped. If you don't think this FO would give a guy more money, if it helps them get an impact guy as well, in the last year it's possible to spend big, then I don't have any clue what else to say.
  20. Slot prices have gone up. It's about the only positive I can say for the new CBA. If you take Fried at 6, it's because he's agreed to take a slight underslot deal. The 10th pick is 2.7 mill, so maybe he agrees to 2.9 mill, because he doesn't want to run the risk of falling outside the top 10. Slot at 43 is damn near 1.2 mill. I seriously doubt Wood turns that down either, to be honest. Slot at 56 is over 900k. O'Brien, as a senior, has no leverage at all. If you take him, it's to save money for someone else later. I'd guess you offer him 500k. Mathieson would probably take an overslot to sign honestly. Slot is above 750k, maybe he'd want 1.3ish? This would get you directly back to being at your cap. Wisdom takes slot money, tad under 500k and you've still got your penalty cash of around 400k to use elsewhere. That's about how I'd see this scenario playing out for us.
  21. To me, my thinking is this FO will do whatever it takes to gain an advantage in a very shady market, if it improves their chances of landing an impact talent like Soler. I've asked KG, Badler, probably others I can't remember, what kind of contract Concepcion should have gotten. They both said 2.5 or so. I liked the signing when we got him and will give him a chance. But I am not happy with the current results, but do acknowledge it's early and he may be struggling with some extracurricular stuff.
  22. Concepcion and Soler are supposedly very tight. Balaguert as well, from playing on the Junior National Team together. Again, I'm not saying we didn't see value in Concepcion. But I can certainly see us wanting to lock him down ASAP so other teams couldn't use him to get Soler as well, IF this is a buddy/buddy deal. And I could see this FO looking at Soler as a must get and if it meant paying a couple mill more for Concepcion, it's still well worth it in the grand scheme of things, especially in a time frame when our payroll is down to begin with. Because I definitely see our FO doing whatever they have to in order to get any edge they can in a market that is shady as all hell. And if overpaying a guy somewhat helps you land a franchise guy, it's just the price of doing business in a shady market.
  23. I don't think I ever said Concepcion was a nobody. Wait, I'm positive about that actually. He was the top Cuban pitcher coming over this offseason, with Omar Luis and Armando Rivero fairly close behind. Neither who has signed yet. Saying we wanted to do as much as possible to entice Soler isn't any reach either, from my standpoint. Everyone thought we overpaid on Concepcion. The question becomes did we do it to help with Soler or did we just miss(if things don't turn around obviously)? I'm sure we liked him, but it's possible that IF he is/was the key to getting Soler, we'd look at his pricetag a bit differently, if we think of Soler as a franchise type talent.
