We're not in THAT bad of a spot here, the more I've thought about it. Dodgers want a pitcher and we've got one that evidently only wants to be there. Sounds bad. Until you realize the Dodgers are very unlikely to outbid a team like Texas for Greinke. And can't, if Texas decides they really want him. Josh Johnson? Toronto likes him a lot, among others. Again, Dodgers would have to gut their system to get him and Toronto could easily beat their offer, even if they did. 3rd option is Garza. Who may be hurt, but we've got other teams on anyway. Then comes Dempster. Relatively low asking price, best season of anyone being mentioned AND he wants to be there. Yeah, Dodgers can take a lesser pitcher and pay the same price they would for Dempster, or maybe even more, for Shields(struggling his ass off), Liriano, Nolasco, or some other lower end guy. But they want a pitcher. Dempster's their best fit and it's not going to gut their system. They'll give us a decent package, in the end, because of these things.
